Chris Sutton was even managing to outscore Alan Shearer early on in the 1994/95 season, but incredibly he managed to fit in a 16-match goalless run in the league after scoring against QPR in November. After a couple of FA Cup goals, the subsequent drought was even blamed on him getting married at the end of January.
Sutton ended it dramatically after just 13 seconds at Goodison Park when the SAS caused mayhem in the Everton box following Henning Berg’s long ball from kick-off.
Shearer then put Rovers in control before the defence had to resist a second-half onslaught from the home side with the score at 2-1. Colin Hendry was a colossus throughout, throwing his body in front of the ball during one famous goalmouth scramble, and earning adulation from Alan Hansen on Match of the Day and a 10/10 rating from Peter White.
