RoverinBath Posted January 18, 2005 Posted January 18, 2005 I'd go for Thompson. Move him to the middle of the park where he could drive the team forward.

rog of the rovers Posted January 18, 2005 Posted January 18, 2005 Todd he deserves it on recent performances. Plus Record as a captain is P1 W1 D0 L0 F1 A0 Pts3 Gd+1 100% success
Rover IN Bury Posted January 18, 2005 Posted January 18, 2005 Forget a captain let us make a stand and become the first democracy. each on the pitch decision should be carefully discussed and then voted on by each of the players by means of a secret ballot.
Ste B Posted January 18, 2005 Posted January 18, 2005 in my opinion, Todd isnt captain material. Too many incidents have clouded his career, such as Punching Phil Brown at Bolton, Hitting Dean Kiely at Charlton, Getting caught booting Dugarry, The Souness fallout before Leeds. Playing for Burnley. I wouldnt tell him that to his face mind, and he has certainly earned his place back in the side.

I like it. But who's going to carry the ballot box around the pitch with them?
yellowsubmarine Posted January 18, 2005 Posted January 18, 2005 Dominic Matteo will be the perfect captain.
PABBY Posted January 18, 2005 Posted January 18, 2005 It has to be Brad for me. I know his position on the pitch isn't ideal, but no other player commands respect more than him. For me, the rest of the senior squad members don't rate because:- - Todd is a little too temperamental for me and has played for the Dingles. - Neill isn't assured of his place anymore. - Short is injury prone and not likely to be in the team anyway. - Flitcroft's had his time. - Dickov doesn't exactly come across as captain material. - Nelson & Mokoena (& Savage?) are new to the club. - Nissa - nah! - Tugay's no longer an automatic choice. - Thompson shows promise, but needs to prove his fitness. - Emerton flatters to deceive and isn't consistent enough to be captain. All IMHO, of course!
modes98 Posted January 18, 2005 Posted January 18, 2005 Dominic Matteo will be the perfect captain. .... of the reserves!
blue/white Posted January 18, 2005 Posted January 18, 2005 As you must be tired of laughing at the Emerton suggestion- I'm taking a chance with my own daft suggestion... I'd like to see MH give the captains' band back to Flitty, just until the end of the current campiagn, then it can be revisited. You must admit that Souness acted unfairly over the summer by stripping him of it , we can all see that it stung GF and it served to motivate him towards greater fitness. It makes sense in my limited thinking that as he's still be playing a somewhat vital role covering for our soon to be departing bottler that the armband should be restored to Flitcroft. Dont shoot me.

Unless of course Savage/Neill/Matteo ( )/Flitty are in mind.
American Posted January 18, 2005 Posted January 18, 2005 (edited) I see your point, but I don't see Flitty playing the majority of the matches. With Savage able to play the same role, they will partner him with someone more attack minded. (Responding to Blue/White) Edited January 18, 2005 by American
blue/white Posted January 18, 2005 Posted January 18, 2005 ok then... I didn't think my masterplan out all the way... Considering the captain should be on the pitch as often as possible, I bow to the swelling tide of 'Todd for captain'. And another kick in the pants to that bast**d Sourness
James No. 7 Posted January 18, 2005 Posted January 18, 2005 MGP. Someone had to say You Know Who's name! My equal first preferences would be Nelsen or Mokoena, but they have only just joined the club. I suppose the only sensible choice would be either of my equal second preferences; Todd or Thompson.
Jan Posted January 18, 2005 Posted January 18, 2005 And another kick in the pants to that bast**d Sourness You know blue/white, if I had said that first I'd have been lambasted. but Abso- f***ing-lutely!!!!
herbergeehh Posted January 18, 2005 Posted January 18, 2005 Savage?? Come on, he hasn't even signed for us. Thompson or Toddy would be the obvious choices, I'd say Todd for his recent performances and for kicking back at his critics the way he has. He's really handled himself well under Sparky, and is arguably our most reliable player.
Bobby G Posted January 18, 2005 Posted January 18, 2005 Well,if we dont give it to MGP then we should be giving it to Andy Todd,he can inspire the troops.
S15 Posted January 18, 2005 Posted January 18, 2005 Yes I 100% agree. All our future decisions should have the sole aim of pissing of Greame Souness. Then we'll really be going places.

Flopsy Posted January 18, 2005 Posted January 18, 2005 sounds rude - I still think some people arent givng full credit to all the good stuff Souness did for the club, last 18months of us not getting relegated or going bust not included. but hey what would I know, Jan was right all along - shall go and self flagellate myself this instant

Any manager who leaves a club in a better state than when he came can always state this.
joey_big_nose Posted January 18, 2005 Posted January 18, 2005 It is not really an enviable position for Hughes to be in: The only established regulars are Friedel, Todd, Emerton and Dickov. Possibly Johansson. Three players of definate captain material have arrived/will arrive but none can really instantly take the armband: Mokoena, Nelsen, Savage. The only sensible thing to do, and what I definately do think Hughes will do, is install Todd as a temporary captain and make it clear to him that is what is happening. If he shows he is capable after a couple of months he will keep it, if he does not I would imagine it will move on to Mokoena or Savage as they will have had time to settle in. Johansson, Thompson, Emerton and Dickov do not really look like captain material for various individual reasons, Friedel would be an excellent captain but his position precludes him.
Lathund Posted January 18, 2005 Posted January 18, 2005 Flitcroft, but seeing as how he's not likely to play most games it won't be him. Todd seems like the primary candidate and he'd be a good choice, but I like the idea of Thommo as captain. At least with all those three you'd never see the captain lacking commitment or not leading by example in a hard-fought contest. It's very likely Savage will be made captain in the summer though.
Yorkshire Blue Posted January 18, 2005 Posted January 18, 2005 sounds rude - I still think some people arent givng full credit to all the good stuff Souness did for the club, last 18months of us not getting relegated or going bust not included. The only problem is, Flopsy, that the last 18 months are included and, it would appear, we are still counting the cost. The more you look at it, the more it would appear GS and his pal Murray were quietly taking us to the cleaners. My only solace is that he is now doing the same to Newcastle.
Jan Posted January 18, 2005 Posted January 18, 2005 (edited) My problem is that I don't believe he left us with a team in a better shape than when he arrived. Sure we were in Division 1 then and going backwards, but we were absolutly abysmal when he left and could easily have been beaten by almost anybody. (Indeed the "second string"- who Hughesy tried out were beaten by BOURNEMOUTH and the first string managed a home draw with West Brom and a loss to Southampton and we now know how poor they are) I think the PLAYERS, by and large are better than the team that were there when he arrived (although I'd take Dunn, Duff and a fit Jansen above anything that we currently have), but they were unfit and poorly trained- see what Hughes has got out of them and judge the difference. I honestly foresaw a fall to below where we were before had he stayed (without being able to spend £7m on Andy Cole's equivalent to bail him out). The fact that we had good times in between was great, but he should have gone when it became obvious he'd started losing people's support. (around the time of his spat with Dunn) Anyway Toddy for Captain - or Flitty if not him Edited January 18, 2005 by Jan
