No one has pointed out that he was from a place that men with guns who chase you normally means you are going to die or get kidnapped.

If I saw a group of blokes chasing me with guns I would bloody run too.

I have to say that whilst I understand the newsworthiness of the story, it is a little unsettling that the coverage is rumbling on. It's unfair to compare, but the extent of the coverage against the actual bombings and attempts that occurred, that claimed dozens of lives, doesn't seem to me to be proportionate.

Condolences to his family, and all the families affected by the recent events, and let's move on ensuring there are no repeats. Forget whether his family will litigate or not, let's let the story slide. Let's not take our eye off the ball, preventing terrorism.

Straw backs down on denial of Iraq link

JACK Straw, the Foreign Secretary, yesterday stepped back from his earlier denials that the war on Iraq had nothing to do with the terror attacks in London.

The Prime Minister, Tony Blair, was believed to be incensed at Mr Straw's refusal to admit that the two events could be linked last week, as he believed this clashed with wider public opinion.

Political sensitivities over the bombings are at an all-time high and were underlined by a poll which showed that support for Mr Blair's handling of the crisis had dropped by 14 per cent in just two weeks.

Yesterday, Mr Straw said he did not rule out the possibility that Iraq may have increased the threat of terrorism for Britain. "It is impossible to say for certain," he told BBC radio. However, Mr Straw stressed that bombings and terrorist atrocities had been carried out long before the war on Iraq or Afghanistan.

You do have to wonder why we invaded Iraq, if terrorists were doing their work before 11/9 (I refuse to use the American dating system). I guess he's also saying that the govt's actions brought it upon London...

Oh come on Stu - that would mean hed have a reasoned argument - instead he'll find something in one of our replies and use that to go off on a tangent trying to draw attention away from the fact that he hasnt answered any of our questions or justified his previous comments - its impressive to watch him try and wriggle out - he should run for office

blue phil - Posted Yesterday (25-07-05), 17:42 Well at least we agree on that , Flops . But actually it's been revealed that he was shot seven times - six of which were to the head !! Everything I've heard and read on this subject confirms me in my belief that the cops and the intelligence people are bungling amateurs . Particularly the cop who thought that one or two bullets in the brain might not be enough .......

The meaning of living in a free society is the fact that all people - in or out of a uniform - are equal under the law . How the hell has it got to the stage when someone can be shot 7 times by plainclothes coppers and people have little or no sympathy for the victim ?

See as i predicted just call me Mystic Flopsy

Didn't you have an argument with Eddie a few pages back saying that there were no arrests when Muslims were "celebrating" after 9/11 and when Eddie pointed out that there was no law actually broken, you seemed to suggest that this didn't matter.

Just curious, how does that sentiment balance with your latest view of a free society?

You're making a lot of assumtions there , Modi - one of them being that Eddie knows what he is talking about ! How about disturbing the peace , inciting racial hatred , causing a public nuisance , etc ....? And neither did I suggest that it "didn't matter" if any law was broken .

Why you put the word "celebrating" in inverted commas seems to suggest that you're not convinced they were happy about 9/11 (an assumpion in return !). Those of us who live in Blackburn know for a fact they were very happy . Hence the march , hence the banners .

Now just imagine the scenario if the BNP were to "celebrate" the deaths of Muslims in Iraq or elsewhere - complete with banners . I reckon the march would be quickly broken up and arrests would quickly follow . Or maybe you disagree ? That's what I mean when I say the law should apply equally to all , be they Muslims , BNP - or even incompetent , trigger happy cops .

You dont know if they're incompetent, you just know what has been reported in the press - if they followed procedures they arent incompetent - and if they were trigger happy they would have shot him straight away, not after a chase as trigger happy means opening fire as soon as the target is seen, not as seems to be the case so that every shot counts (all 8 of them) ie from right by the target (the most accurate way to shoot something) but I dont expect you to know anything about that Phil, because that would mean that it doesnt fit into your very small blinkered world.

Sorry unfair comment removed

The style of avoiding questions is actually pretty flawless. If there is something you don't want to answer then avoid it and throw in some sort of insult - nothing too strong. Then the person retaliates to the insult and the good points are forgotten. It's a brilliant way of calling somebody stupid whilst simultaneously avoiding something which might make yourself look stupid. Politicians do it, the dirty liars.

Extremists have been around since year dot, living in their own little world. Now though, the internet allows them access to the most easily led people anywhere in the world. For all its good points, should t'internet be consigned to the dustbin? (whoever invented it!).

Anyone seen this? London Tube Survival Guide

London Tube Survival Guide

===========================

Issued by the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs

24-July-2005

To ensure that you won't end up with 5 bullets to your head, please consider the following important rules of behavior:

1) Never run

Even if you're late going to work, NEVER RUN to catch the subway -- only walk slowly (as Englishman Sting sang: "A gentleman will walk but never run.") It doesn't matter if you miss the subway and your Thatcherite employer will fire you. Your life is more important.

2) Light clothing

No matter how cold the British climate and the subway corridors, NEVER WEAR A COAT or other thick clothing, since that could look like you're hiding explosives on you. We recommend beach attire only. It doesn't matter if you'll catch the influenza and your Thatcherite employer will fire you. Your life is more important.

3) White skin

To avoid being confused with Islamists for "walking while black" (or brown), try to GET A WHITE SKIN -- not even a light suntan because that looks even more suspect (Middle-Eastern). For details, you may consult with Michael Jackson.

4) White neighborhood

Living in poor neighborhoods makes you suspect, given the high density of surveillance cameras that will track you on your way from home to the subway. TRY MOVING to a white rich neighborhood.

5) If they're after you

If some shadowy plain-clothes gang starts running at you, STRIP NAKED immediately to show that you're not hiding any explosives on your body. If they're muggers -- too bad, but your life is more important. Be ready to accept a full body-cavity search, because these professionals know that any asshole could hide a hand grenade.

Can't tell if this is satire or not... laugh.gif
