He can't go on forever. Mind you he's still having a massive impact at the club. I reckon a new 1 yr rolling deal might not be a bad idea as he's still showing how important he is to the club. Ok he'll be taking a more and more reduced roll as time goes on (although not at the moment) but like Bellamy when you have top quality you have to keep it and use it for all it's worth.

I don't think a lot of people realise just what an impact Tugay has on the team, without him we don't keep possesion as well and we don't have a replacement who is as effective with the other things tugay does well like all the simple passes and interceptions he makes (also of course there are the more incisive balls he can play as we all know).

I really don't think Koumas or Holland have the level of technical abiltiy that Tugay has and a rolling one year contract would be my preferred option although if that is not to be for any reason I think we should look around europe for another similar kind of player, with that continental touch and presence, coming towards the end of his career or a player who is maybe out of favour at a bigger club, who wouldnt cost too much. Big Sam always seems to find them so they are out there!!!

I actually believe Tugay can at times be as influential for us as Cantona was at United in his hey-day (obviously in a different position) and that he needs a more worthy replacement than a british slugger.

Sean Davis would be a popular choice in my eyes, he's good with the ball at his feet, a very disciplined player who can organise - think Flitcroft with a bit more pace and flair. I've always been impressed with him since he bossed the game in our Div1 clash a few seasons back and I think he would relish the opportunity to make a name for himself, which he is struggling to do at Spurs. Still young and well within our price range too.

Tugay has to be replaced soon in my opinion, for all his flair and nice touches he is simply too inconsistent for my liking, and his lack of pace and generally poor tackling simply isn't up to the standard we require if we are to move on to the next level. Although to be fair to him, he's adapted to his holding role pretty well and his partnership with Savage in the middle is probably the best one available to us ATM.

Toogs is like one of them mystical magic men who live till they're 800, so should be ok for a new 10 year contract...... cool.gif

If he carries on the way he is going right now, he's a good bet for another year extension. It's a long season though - he's at the age now where one injury - even an innocuous looking one, can take a long time to come back from.

Going off present form then Tugs should be offered a new 1 yr rolling contract. His heart is at the club and the lad just seems to keep going.

As an attacking option id like us to look at Kenny Miller

As a midfielder i aint too sure. Not many good midfielders around in the lower clubs that we could pick up for cheap - maybe we should look abroad.

Now that it would appear Bolton will not be making a move for Hidetoshi Nakata in January because they can't afford the £2.5m fee Fiorentina are asking for, perhaps the Japanaese playmaker could be the sort of player we are looking for to replace Tugay when the time comes.

Fair enough, he still has a lot to prove as far as cutting it in the Premiership goes and he's not a carbon copy of the type of player Tugay is, but he's a class player, he's clearly willing to relocate to NW England and the added TV revenue and shirt sales in Japan would help finance the deal and his wages.

Just a thought. I have them occasionally.

i *still* think the best young right back around is ryan taylor of wigan. he isnt getting a lot of action at the moment thanks to chimbonda, but i can see him being a real star of the future. we should have got him last season and i doubt wigan would let him go now, but we could use a little cover at right back. i dont really think its acceptable to put a centreback there and hope for the best because these days your full backs have to offer something going forward. its a pretty specialised position

I would rather a decent left back to be honest. Gray is okay but if we could get someone operating more at Lucas' level that would be great.

Even then another striker and central midfielder are bigger priorities.

Nakata is a decent shout but I havn't seen much of him. Does he have the work rate for Hughes' tastes?

Nakata looked a world beater when at Roma for a time and definitely is a very skillful player. Doubt Fiorentina would hold out for 2.5million. These are the type of players we need to be looking at. Quality but down on their luck and needed a new start. It was how we got Tugay, who was mainly busy warming the bench at Ibrox before we snapped him up.

How about a fit again Thommo. I know it's early days but I feel he has all of the attributes to play in the centre of the park.

But Thompson isn't a play-maker in the same mould as Tugay, he's more of a charge downfield at every given opportunity type of player. Nakata picks people out with some cracking passes and gets forward when he needs to. Like Tugay he's quite economical when it comes to saving his energy and just seeks out the right position from where to receive and pass the ball.

Another disadvantage of using Thompson in that role is, like it or not, he extremely injury-prone and even if he was used as a successor to Tugay we'd be bloody stupid not to have a decent understudy.
