1864roverite Posted January 1, 2006 Posted January 1, 2006 I think that I have the answer. I do believe that Lawrenson actually applied for the Managers job a good few years back (around the Don Mackay era) and was laughed out at interview. And that comes from a footballing icon who has Rovers in his heart

BRFC4EVA Posted January 1, 2006 Posted January 1, 2006 Was a the match y'day and was of course absoutly delighted with the performance and scoreline against Wigan. However, i would like to comment on something that has been raised on the official board. I was sitting in the right hand third of the away end and on the official board those sitting near to the stand to our left said that the home fans sang 'town full of pakis'. I thought they were singing 'town full of smack heads', but as i mentioned i was on the other side of the stand. Can anybody confirm what was sung?
Quack Posted January 1, 2006 Posted January 1, 2006 I am sure they were " chanting " the former insult not the latter.
ihateburnley Posted January 1, 2006 Posted January 1, 2006 Did anyone else here Lawro on 6-0-6? When a Rovers fan mentioned the great following at yesterday's game his comment was "Not very far to go was it." What a tosser, why does he hate Rovers so much? It looked from the highlights on Football First that we stuffed them completely but again the co-comentator was very grudging in his comments about us. Not sure who he was but he said after Reid's goal that it was the first bright spot of an otherwise dull game. Didn't sound dull on the radio or luck dull on the highlights so I'm not sure why he said that. Does anyone know who it was, a Scouser I think. 370475 Mark Lawrenson is a tosser in more ways than one. He knows cock all about the game and I find it laughable that he presents Match Of The Day, the most well-known football show on Earth, alongside Gary Lineker and Alan Hanson who obviously know what they are on about. Even on the rare occasions that he gives us praise, I can sense a hint of sarcasm. Prick.

He looked very uncomfortable shifting in his seat, gazing vacantly towards his feet and gulping. What's his problem?

RovertheHill Posted January 1, 2006 Posted January 1, 2006 To be fair, we got some good comments from pundits this weekend. John Gregory (who is sounding more like Jack Dee every day) said that we had to be taken seriously now. Chris Kamara was also very complimentary about our players and Mark Hughes.
Exiled_Rover Posted January 1, 2006 Posted January 1, 2006 Not to mention Champagne Charlie is fighting our corner in the media

philipl Posted January 1, 2006 Posted January 1, 2006 There's an asian Rovers fan on the official board who confirmed that they were singing about a "town full of pakkies". Whilst he did not seem particularly bothered about it and nobody has made a media issue out of it, I hope the Wigan Club get it sorted out.
greggyk Posted January 1, 2006 Posted January 1, 2006 CC is a legend. 370546 and Alan McAnally, especially last season after the game with the French in the semies.

Gav Posted January 1, 2006 Posted January 1, 2006 Having not been to that many away games in recent times can anyone confirm if these incidents are the norm these days: No Beer for away fans Police threatening people for singing in "an aggressive manner" Racist cr@p coming from the nuggets to our left, which also included monkey noises when Reid was fouled in the first half Snatch squads after people for smoking, one lad was dragged from a cubicle in the gents by the stewards and almost caused a mint riot People openly snorting cocaine in the gents Town centre pubs closing their doors after the game on police orders The promise of free pies, then charging half price but incapable of serving a decent sized away following What a strange day but good see us win. Wigan are without doubt a premiership club on the pitch but off it they've got a long way to go.
Rovermatt Posted January 1, 2006 Posted January 1, 2006 Those were two absolutely scorching goals from MGP and Reid. We looked a class above a pretty decent Wigan side. Two excellent results over the festive season have moved us into a good position in the league and with a home banker in hand (hopefully) against a truly woeful Sunderland team, we could be in the top six in no time. However we clearly need a quality player to partner Bellamy. Sutton could be the perfect foil.
Paul Mellelieu Posted January 1, 2006 Posted January 1, 2006 He wasnt at the game to confirm anything. 370567 There was a small group of young men, to out left, who sang it once or twice as far as I could tell.
eddiecolne Posted January 1, 2006 Posted January 1, 2006 Just got back from Wigan (Orrell), (Some of you don't know how to celebrate a rare Rovers away victory ) Great party last night and today Especially enjoyed the begruded complimentry praise from my pie eating friends On the subject of the morons to our left at JJB, I'm sure I saw the bobbies chucking some of them out during the game, don't know if it was related to the racist incident. On the whole think Wigan fans are o.k. if lacking a little in football tradition (For obvious reasons), how many songs did they sing????
murray92 Posted January 1, 2006 Posted January 1, 2006 The Wigan fans were certainly in better voice than the Liverpool fans at Anfield in October. They still uttered a few songs at 2 nil down before they all left. Obviously not to the festive spirit of "Jingle Bells" for which we were singing! Was this sung at Boro on boxing day too??? Fabulous!!! Super day out, and worth every minute of the trip down from sunny Glasgow! Some guy behind me, about 2 rows up from the front got lifted for celebrating our first goal! He done nowt wrong some of the stewards weren't sure what they were doing. He was escorted back 10 minutes later after rightly kickin up fuss! I am still to be convinced on Reid overall, although his absolute belter strike did harm his chances. It all happened so quickly, what a thunderbolt, and even the camera man almost missed it! I was most impressed with Gray and Bentley - probably the latters best game for us???. Zurab and Nelson are 2 contrasting defenders and this could work as a pairing given time. Bradley - 6, super save from Connolly near the end. Not looking as confident as he once was and was lucky to get away with one kick out. Neill - 7, solid as per most of this season Zurab - 8, almost matched the lightning quick Wigan front 2! Nelson - 8, tough and uncompromising! Just what you need! Gray - 9, One of his best games for us. Crucial clearence off the line, worked hard tracking back at 2 up, unlucky not to score. MOM Bentley - 8, possibly best game in Rovers shirt. Needs to keep it up though. Reid - 7, Absolute belter strike! The boy can strike a ball!! Savage - 7, Worked tirelessly again defensively, not the offensive threat he should be though. Pedersen - 7, Stunning goal, quiet though thereafter with patches of brilliance. Kuqi - 7, Got his head to most of the high balls, always working always looking for the ball! Dickov - 6, Good ball across for the first, unlucky on a volley straight at Pollet. Subs: Bellamy - 7, He clearly has the class, and right decision by MH on when to introduce him. Emerton - 6, Didn't have much time to influence but was crucial in the build up for the 3rd. I was impressed with his "lets get more goals" attitude while others were showboating! Dunno if anyone else noticed but the referee was quite impressive. This Clattenberg fellow has been applauded by several sections of the media, and its good to have an official that lets the game flow and isn't pernicity and stop start. Hope Lawro continues to predict the worst for us, if he predicts a Rovers win our luck may be out!
cn174 Posted January 1, 2006 Author Posted January 1, 2006 Racist cr@p coming from the nuggets to our left, which also included monkey noises when Reid was fouled in the first half 370575 I dont know if its about the same incident, but Wigan do have this song that goes 'we are from Wigan and live in mudhuts, ooh ahh, ooh ah ah, oh to be a wiganner' which would sound like monkey noises.
grizfoot Posted January 1, 2006 Posted January 1, 2006 I don't know how the fans can do that. Especially since they have some very good black players themselves.
Sanny Posted January 1, 2006 Posted January 1, 2006 I think that racism is absolutely diabolical. any fan chanting racist comments should be kicked out of the ground at least. Some fans don't have a brain cell between them, it is extremely disappointing and makes me not want to go to a game at all. Pure stupidity.

Pure stupidity. 370625 That's actually something I've started thinking about recently and what is interesting for us is that this year may be one of the few years in recent seasons where there is quite a bit of good talent that we could use in the teams that could go down. Even looking at Sunderland, Arca could be an interesting buy for us to slot into the attacking left back role that Gray has shown can be such an important part of our game, and basically all of the teams down there have at least one player who would make a good addition to our starting 11.
Eddie Posted January 2, 2006 Posted January 2, 2006 Haha yes...I'm not advocating shipping in racist supporters, even I don't have ideas as weird as that. Should have been the comment about lua lua being a potential signing.

At half-time, whilst trying to fight my way out of the loo, a largish group of Rovers fans were singing a Kuqi tribute song to the tune of The Flintstones. A snippet from the lyrics infers that he indulges in a spot of "Paki bashing". Only one word to describe these morons - SCUM.
