I must say watching all the australia games lucas would have gone pretty close to the list. My pick, Buffon. The main reason there in the final, other reason is pirlo Buffon an excellent choice. However, the standard for midfield play in this tournament, and for the last 12 years, is being set by Zinedine Zidane.
speeeeeeedie Posted July 6, 2006 Posted July 6, 2006 Beckham. His performances were only half of what he could do.

I must say watching all the australia games lucas would have gone pretty close to the list. My pick, Buffon. The main reason there in the final, other reason is pirlo Wouldn't really say Pirlo, not been that impressive. Cannavaro on the other hand, especially how he played against Germany in the semi.
Rover4ever Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 Cannavaro has been immense throughout as has been Pirlo Zidane shone only in 2 matches, while I have no idea what Henry is doing there in that list
pleasure Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 Cannavaro. there's no better 'reader of the game'. he never panics. he's dominant in the air and astute in possession. for me he's a clear winner.
Rovermatt Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 (edited) Cannavaro is the best defender in the world. He has been peerless in this tournament. Zidane is one the greatest players ever but he has not performed for the whole World Cup. Edited July 7, 2006 by Rovermatt
neekoy Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 I think Zidane has killed his chances Cannavaro all the way
FourLaneBlue Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 Cannavaro has been peerless, despite not having Nesta next to him. A truly great defender in the old Italian no-nonsense stopper style.
Perth_Rover Posted July 10, 2006 Author Posted July 10, 2006 http://home.skysports.com/worldcup/article...lden+Ball+award seems zidane wins
Rovermatt Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 F*** off. If Cannavaro wasn't the best player at that World Cup then Craig Bellamy's a nice guy.
Scotty Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 I thought Gattuso was even better than Cannavaro myself.
Rover4ever Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 farcical decision. Probably the Zidane worshipping journalists skewed the decision. He had 2 good games in the whole Cup FFS !
neekoy Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 Good on him, this gets more political every four years as the show goes around Cannavaro was the best player of the tournament, everyone including himself knows that
pleasure Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 farcical decision. Probably the Zidane worshipping journalists skewed the decision. He had 2 good games in the whole Cup FFS ! totally agree. it's an absolute disgrace.
USRoverME Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 well he did have the strogest header in the tournament...
Oklahoma Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 This just proves how low is the level of sports journalism. He made 2 good games, scored 2 penalties and nothing more, really. Oh, yeah, he got sent off too I wouldn't even pick him for the best 23...

That's a bit rough, he is my World Cup squad just not the best player of the tournament Even if it was only 2 games where he was the worlds best, he still was outstanding and a lot ahead of the majority of the rest of the players
Presty On Tour Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 all sounds abit silly eh, there was talk zidane was going to be dropped for the 2nd round game against spain as he was that bad in the first 2 group games, then susspended for the 3rd game. wot aload of crap. buffon imo was immense all the way through the tournament, he would of been my winner.
American Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 Polling was open until after the match. 4 years ago they closed it at the half and Kahn won, only to let in 2 soft goals.

They are only there because they are/were world class players. But in this WC, they were average.
