Billy Castell Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 The Human League are OK. Not sure about the others. Better than Nickelback by miles though.
LeChuck Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 I think I might go and see Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster over Christmas, they've got a new album out next year after reforming. I hope it's as good as their first album, I love that one.
Billy Castell Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 Is it the original line up? They were coming and going over the last few years, so I am not surprised that they ceased to exist for a bit. Hope they do come back as I'm sick of the bum gravy that is on Channel 4 and the other music channels. It's so overplayed and middle of the road.
LeChuck Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 Everyone bar the lead guitarist I think, he left in 2005 and I think he's in other bands now.
ABBEY Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 LYNARD SKYNARD MAY 09 ....OH YES BEER AND THE SKYN ..HEAVEN
allrovertheworld Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Anyone else see the Kings of Leon this week in Manc? I went it was pretty awesome. Can't get over the fact that these guys are 26 years old and have such an amazing array of songs already. Only down side was no Red Morning Light and Mollys Chambers was too slow. However tunes like Fans and On Call were possibley some of the best tracks I have ever heard played live by any band. Think these guys will just get better and better for years to come.
ABBEY Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 heard their new album its very good, not heard early stuff tho
tony gale's mic Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Think their newest album is their poorest effort. Don't blame them for moving into stadium rock and there's a few great numbers on there - Sex on Fire is a great tune no matter how much it gets played. But yeah I still long for their old days of Red Morning Light and The Bucket. Oh well. Anyone else getting really excited about Blur's reunion? Gonna get tickets to my 4th Glastonbury sometime in the next couple of weeks, heard they're headlining the Sunday...closing the festival with "This is a Low" would be an amazing way to end it. Does anyone on here remember the gig they played at King George's (minus Coxon) back in autumn '03?
colin Posted December 18, 2008 Author Posted December 18, 2008 I've been having one of my retro moments. This one involving Elvis Costello. I know that he started off 30 years ago but "This Year's Model;" "My Aim Is True;" "Armed Forces;" & "Get Happy" are timeless gems. Oh well, just my opinion.
Claytons Left Boot Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 Shane was pure class last Saturday at the Pogues gig. At one point he staggered backwards and kept going until he landed in the drums. Had to be lifted out. Between numbers he simply muttered the title of the next song. Couldn't tell a word he said. The only other thing he said was, 'you lot look like a load a effing fat barstewards.' You've got to love him. The Stranglers, supporting, were very good. Never really taken any notice of them in the past but they were impressive and a 'Best of' album is winging its way to me as we speak.

allrovertheworld Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 if thats poor defo gonna grab early stuff because its bloody good Try 'Becasue of the Times' their third and best album. Some of the tracks on 'Youth and Young Manhood' their first album are brilliant aswell but very different from what they are putting out now. They have evolved and this will ensure they are with us for years to come.

I've been a fan of Declan's most of my adult life, as Andy Kershaw put it 'four eyes, one vision'. The way that guys structures lyrics is phenomenal. Makes me laugh thinking back to me buying 'Get Happy'. The sleeve was made to look worn, and my Dad took it back to the shop in Blackburn (Not Reidy's - this one was near Boots in the Precinct) and asked for the money back. When I bought 'Armed Forces' Susan Haworth found me interesting for a while Edited December 20, 2008 by adopted scouser
allrovertheworld Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 I too went, best live band I've seen and there's been quite a few! Top Five live bands I have seen are :- 1 - At The Drive In - 1st and I think only UK tour. 2 - Slayer - At Ozzfest 1998. 3 - Kings of Leon - M.E.N last week. 4 - Beastie Boys - M.E.N. in the round can't remember the year. 5 - Naplam Death - at the Witchwood in Ashton under Lyne. would be interesting to hear other peoples top five.
tony gale's mic Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 I posted my top 40 a couple of pages back but here's the top 5: 1. Radiohead @ MEN Arena, Manchester 2003 2. Arcade Fire @ Leadmill, Sheffield 2005 3. Muse, Glastonbury 2004 4. My Bloody Valentine, Roundhouse, London 2008 5. Daft Punk, O2 Wireless Festival, Harewood House, Leeds 2007
LeChuck Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 I'm amazed to see Jeff Buckley's version of Hallelujah is the Christmas number two...obviously not happy that the X-Factor's version has beaten it to number one, but still...it's rare for such a great song to get anywhere near the charts, especially at Christmas when it's generally filled with novelty crap. It inspired me to listen to the album 'Grace' again, I haven't heard it for years and kind of forgot how good it was...especially this song.

tony gale's mic Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Yeah the version of Hallelujah on there is brilliant but is probably only middling in context of how good the album is. Lover You Should Have Come on Over is probably my favourite one from that album just about.

I was also a fan of his father, Tim.

Lover You Should Have Come on Over is probably my favourite one from that album just about. Just was listening to Leonard Cohen's version of Hallelujah the other day - probably the best one out there. Agree with how great Grace and Lover.... is.
Paul Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 Haven't read the thread so don't know if this has been mentioned. I bought Duffy's Rockferry Deluxe Edition last week. I rarely buy music these days, and a female artist is even rarer. I think it's a very good album and she has a great voice.

This is pretty much how I remember Shane McGowan when the Pogues appeared in Birmingham and Blackburn (twice) in the mid 80's. Perhaps thats why Andrew 'The Clobberer' Ranken used to play the drums standing up!

Grace is so good that I don't want to ruin it by listening to it too often. Every so often I'll put it on the iTunes and be reminded of how big a talent we lost when Buckley went. Anyway, I bought Black Stone Cherry's Folklore and Superstition in the sales today. It's very RAWK but very good. I also got Talib Kweli's Quality for Christmas. I'd recommend it to any fans of proper east coast hip-hop. This is pretty much how I remember Shane McGowan when the Pogues appeared in Birmingham and Blackburn (twice) in the mid 80's. Perhaps thats why Andrew 'The Clobberer' Ranken used to play the drums standing up! I find McGowan quite embarrassing to be honest. Fortunately he's English so it could be worse.
