The altest installment of claret humour

1959/60 Series - Game Fourteen

Blackburn Rovers v Burnley Saturday 17th October 1959

Well here we are, the match every Rovers and Clarets supporter looks forward to. It's the BIG ONE the first encounter of the season against local rivals Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.

Referee: Mr.N.N.Hough (Macclesfield)

Linesmen: Mr. W. E. Haynes and MR. G. Stevenson.

Crowd: 33,316

Teams

Blackburn: Leyland, Bray, Pickering, Smith, Woods, McGrath, Douglas, Dobing, Dougan, Vernon, McLeod.

Burnley: Blacklaw, Angus, Elder, Adamson, Seith, Miller, Pilkington, McIlroy, Pointer, White, Harris.

Burnley were going into this game just one point and one place above Rovers, so the Clarets fans were hoping beyond hope that their heroes could pull this one out of the bag and stay ahead of their rivals, but it was not to be, as Rovers picked up both points and became the second team in as many games to put one over on their near neighbours.

It is mid October and the stand pipes are still prominent on the streets of Burnley as the long drought continues.

Due to England playing a full International at Cardiff this afternoon, both teams will be without key players, Ronnie Clayton for Rovers who today is having his first game as captain of his country and John Connelly who is making his England debut.

Blackburn have plenty to do with our season ticket sales.

If we were playing Blackburn this season in a league game at our level, we'd sell more season tickets.

If we were at the bottom of division four and rovers were favourites for the champions league, do you honestly think that no Burnley fans would go and watch Blackburn?

Course they would.

Whilst we're at the stage we are both at I don't think it makes that much difference. However there are quite a few 'neutral' Burnley and Blackburn supporters who used to watch us both at home on differing weekends....being the costly venture that that would be nowadays, who do you think these 'neutrals' will go and watch?

Not us.

I think Blackburn have a direct influence on our Season Tickets, but as Claretrant says above, a locale this size cannot really support 3 league teams, plus another 30 or so within 100 miles.

Who agress with this dingle view? Cant believe there are many floating supporters these days personally!

Makes sense to me.

Merge them, call them oooh, let's see..."Lancashire United"

So that's "Claretrant" and Thonodrug together in hot luuuurve.

As Montgomery Burns would say....."Excellent."

Slimmer of the year gets himself a new Burnley shirt; Porker at last gets a shirt big enough.

They'll do anything for publicity won't they? Even advertising the fact that they have obese fans.

Careful now. Not a million miles away fom me in the Blackburn End is his idea see-saw partner.
