92er Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 The advice in the LT today, involving quotes from Chief Superintendent David Mallaby, for Rovers' fans is to stay in Amsterdam, or in the Oude Haven area of Rotterdam which is nice and has a number of bars. Rovers' fans are advised not to go into the centre of Rotterddam. The police are taking their largest number of officers to an away Rovers game.
AggyBlue Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 The walkways are covered. "Protected by a two metre high fence with rolling barbed wire across the top" All this talk of walkways to and from the ground reminded me of Derby in the late seventies, early eighties. That one was uncovered though and all manner of missiles came into it as you walked down it. For all those making the trip, have a great time, lets see plenty interim reports from internet cafes. Drink lots, Sing loud, Stay safe
modes98 Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 Have got a couple of numbers, if anyone wants to take mine to arrange the meet up then by all means pm me.
Joost Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 Just having a quick look through the entertainment section of tourism amsterdam style and found a place that Jordan may have to avoid HOMOMONUMENT !! Don't avoid the jordaan (probably the best place in town to drink beers), just avoid the homomonument... I'm gonna sit at the Leidseplein, nearby Centraal Station (tram 1,2 and 5 will take you directly to the station)... At Leidse there are plenty of pubs and coffeeshops. We've applied for tickets a couple of days ago and, surprisingly, I got an e-mail on Sunday from Rovers confirming that we've got them. Not being able to fly to Prague (to see AJAX play), the best alternative was without a doubt to see our favourite English squad play against our national arch-rivals We're very happy that we can watch the game and I'm sure we're cheering just as hard as you guys. For after the game, I recommend to go to Paradiso, Escape or the Sugar Factory... The problem with Amsterdam is that every pub has to close at 01.00am... Only nearby 'het Spui' (Spui square) the pubs are open till 03.00am. So after the game you can go to a club or to 'het Spui'. Feeling quite confident that we're gonna win... 0-4 just like last time we've crushed them
Joost Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 The walkways are covered. "Protected by a two metre high fence with rolling barbed wire across the top" Oh yeah, it's quite a fortress. Two years ago the police wouldn't let AJAX fans watch the game in rotterdam because of vandalism in the trains. As a result, we stranded on 100 metres from the stadium. Whole the game we had to sit nearby the stadium listening to our radio's while the cockroaches (nickname of feyenoord-fans) were targeting us with stones; the two sides only separated by a fence. Although we only saw the game on the telly afterwards, I vividly remember that day, being 2-1 down in stoppage time and 2-3 up at the end of the game... But on the other hand, that was (probably one of) the reason(s) that the cockroaches went insane, first throwing rocks at us and later challenging the ME (MP)... Last year, they beat us both at home and away, but due to a new system, the play-offs, we've played them again, winning 3-0 and 2-4. After the 2-4, about 800 cochroaches were waiting at us at the bridge nearby the station where we had to take the train back to Amsterdam. To avoid riots, the police arrested all of them, so that we could have a safe journey home...(is part of a new law to prevent football-riots) What I'm trying to say, I think, is that the police and the authorities are prepared for riots and that's why it's very likely that only minor incidents occur... Still, I don't put on my AJAX shirt
Derby Blue Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 I know all of your players and other Premiership players as well. I probably watch more Pl football than most English. The problem with English teams is that they treat European games different than PL games. All of the English teams play a horrible defensive counter-attacking football tactic in European games while in the PL they play nice and quick tempo football. They are just scared to play proper football and they dont play to their own strenghts. England is a huge country with ###### loads of money to spend and they just cant seem to win European trophies or play attacking football away from home. Liverpool we're extremely lucky to win the CL a few years back just as Man U but a country like England with all that money should win a trophy every 2/3 years. The 2 top teams in Holland (PSV and scum) only have about 5 to 7 million pounds to spend max on players every year closely followed by AZ and Feyenoord who only have 3 to 4 million to spend. I guess even Watford or Fulham could spend that kind of money.... And Dutch clubs are not that far off compared English teams in history of European Football. England : 10 CL wins and 6 Uefa Cups Holland : 6 CL wins and 4 Uefa Cups You'll see on Thursday. Your playing one of the worst Feyenoord sides in the last 10 years and we're still gonna win against you guys... Its one thing having the money but its still got to be spent wisely - just look at the likes of Newcastle who seem to spend millions but never get anywhere, I know they've got injury problems but some of the signings they've nade have been big mistakes. British clubs seem to be getting better and better at playing in European comps - all should qualify through their groups in both UEFA and CL. I wouldn't go so far as saying we will dominate Europe again soon but we're getting close. By the way SCF08, do you know how the seat numbers work in the stadium? our tickets just have the block (GG) and a number ie 0490. No row number. Are these actual seats or is it an unreserved area?

You don't have to sit on a particular seat. Just go in the stadium, find a seat and stand on top of it... (that's my experience in the away-stand) Btw The earlier you go in the stadium, the bigger the chance you're standing on the first ring (and that's where you wanna stand) Usually, they fill up the first ring before letting people on to the second one... See you on Thursday

Joost Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 Thanks for that - standing up, now there's a novelty. Wonder how the stewards react to that! at the Bergkamp testimonial, quite a few bobbies were telling us that we had to sit down, but they never succeeded. It's quite usual that fans (at least die-hards from the home crowd and the away fans) stand in Holland. So don't get too ######, save it for after
Joost Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 I just received notice that I cannot pick up my tickets in Holland and by now it is too late to have them sent by mail. Can anyone help me out by getting my tickets from Rovers and take them to Holland for me? If so, please let me know as soon as possible.

Can't really help you, but isn't there still time to get them via mail? Anyway, I'm sure some of the members who live nearby Ewood can help you out.

We are flying to Amsterdam on Wed should arrive about 9ish. I could get the tickets for you on Wed if that helps. Give me a shout if needs be. You would need to let me know by Tuesday at the latest. I will give you my mobile no if required. Edited November 21, 2006 by rovers4ever95
herbergeehh Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 (edited) The best way to get from the airport to Central station is by train? Where is the airport, geographically? Are there offers like "week pass", "three day pass" or similar available, for both trams and trains? I guess it's just the airport-central station-airport + amsterdam-rotterdam-amsterdam I'll need them for though, so maybe single tickets are just as easy? Ticket in hand, I'm starting to look forward to this! Will be there from Wed morning, so I'm all up for beers - if we could find a decent place to meet up. Some suggestions on this thread already, since I'll be online from my hotel (allegedly they have internet connection) I'll check this thread later on. See you in Holland! Gav Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 We'll be there this time tomorrow Now just to get today out of the way
Ricky Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 I only got back from Amsterdam last week so I can tell you now how easy it is to get from the airport to Centraal station. Don't bother with taxis, just grab a train ticket from one of the machines (they are cheaper than buying from the ticket office) and jump on one of the double decker trains. It's about 20 minutes to Centraal station. If anyones not sorted for a hotel, try the amstel botel. It's in an ideal location and it's quite pleasant. Just to give a couple of good pubs for you guys to head to, try the Olde Sailor or the Black Tiger Bar. Both are bang in the midle of the red light district so you have a nice view whilst drinking your beer. You also get a chance to mock the lads going in and out of various doors. Only problem I found was that some big burly blokes kept calling me Charlie.. very odd!!
adam lodge Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 I am staying in Den Hagg will there be trains running to there after the game from the stadium or will i have to go to Rotterdam Central
1864roverite Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 no one? sorry picks were full but we will see you on the flight
OJRovers Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 What flags are people taking? I'm thinking of making one with; TUGAY=GOD on it.
garnersfags Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 Is anyone still staying in Rotterdam or are most fans taking the advice to stay in Amsterdam? We're booked into a hotel in Rotterdam as I dont fancy the potential 2 hour wait and journey back to Amsterdam before getting to a coffee shop or bar. Having said that, I do fancy a bit of early hours Ashes watching and I'm not sure if there are any 24 hour sports bars in Rott. I'll need to make a decision on whether to switch to Amst by tonight. Any thoughts? We're on the ferry so looking forward to the cheesy disco (and casino?). It's going to be the best ever away trip, cant wait.
