[Archived] Benni Mccarthy - Gone

Recommended Posts

Onwards and upwards I say - forget him!

Thanks for the memories...but he's nothing now!

Next...

Could not agree more.

Whoever comes in as his 'replacement', will get 100% of my backing until otherwise proven unjust!

Has he actually GONE yet? Yes, I'd hope so, but if the move falls through and we end up having him for 6 months, and he then goes on to be prolific (I doubt it too, but still) you'll look (and possibly feel) a bit stupid. Never assume they've gone until they HAVE.

Lazy and not interested are two fair comments that you can label him with. Mc Carthy is a frustrating player if things are not going his way he does start to sulk.

However the quality is there and if he was playing under another manager than BS he would have been playing a lot more and scoring. The problem that Sam had with him which has been discussed on many occasions he does not fit into Sam's system.

No doubt he will do well at West Ham as they are known to play football which is something that we have forgotten to do since Hughes left.

The only system that Benni needed to follow was weight watchers. Irrespective of whether you like the manager or not - you would have thought he would have ensured he was at the peak of physical fitness this season so he could force his way back into the South Africa squad. This obviously wasn't the case - you can't blame the manager for everything.

I don't want anyone here that isn't 100% committed to the club, certainly to with the way he's behaved lately anyway. I hope he's been fined his last week's wages for missing training.

It's sad that it looks like he's going to leave under such poor circumstances because in my opinion it undoes a lot of the good work he did in the past. Undone perhaps isn't quite the right word but I certainly won't look upon him as fondly in the future if he'd simply kept his head down, played some football and moved on when the situation suited all three parties.

Bye Benni, thanks for the memories, just a shame on what my parting memory will be, now go and buy an expensive pie.

Still to think we could have got close to ten times what we have received two years ago is a little depressing.

Close to £20m, seriously?

Even if Chelsea were keen we would have got around 10 max.

I reckon we've got closer to £1.5m for him now, so I think we could have got not far off ten times more. He had just scored 24 goals, which is mightily impressive, and he wasn't to dissimilar to the age they signed Drogba at, and he cost £24m?

People are deluding themselves thinking anyone would have offered anything more than between 5-8 million for him even 2 years ago for a 30 year old. Knowing the history our club has in selling players, be sure that had a decent offer been made for him back then he would have been sold earlier.

Comments from Sam

Insisting McCarthy’s decision had more to do with a wages hike of £15,000 to £50,000-a-week rather than playing time

Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce said: ‘If you’re at a club you have to play for your place, World Cup or not. you’re not consistent enough then you don’t get in the side.

‘It’s a player’s responsibility to give his best performance every week. The reason he is going will be the size of the contract and the money.

You can criticise McCarthy all you want but in my opinion he's been a very good player for us and one of the best players in term of techincial skill to ever grace the Rovers shirt . In his first season he was particularly brilliant since then he's been a bit hit and miss, but for the large part he's been a key player in our team. Even when he wasn't playing at his optimium level he still came up with the goods in terms of goals. We probably wouldn't even be in the Premiership if it wasn't for all thoose vital goals he scored towards the end of last season.

Seemingly the new regime under Big Sam particualry since the beginning of this season has seen Benni not get as much time on the pitch as he would like in the build up to the World Cup in his own country. Obviously some sort of issue between McCarthy and Big Sam. Not really difficult to see how it might have arose. McCarthy is a flair and specialist player who can only be used effectively if he's got a strike partner and with the ball played along the floor. Whereas Big Sam is more a 4-5-1 man with a direct style of play and prefers players who "put in a shift". In many ways Benni was always a round peg in square hole under our current tactics and style of play under Big Sam.

I don't blame either Big Sam or Benni, sometimes in football there's just a clash of personalties and the only option is for the player in question to leave. Fergie/Becks, Souey/Dunn are just two example i'm sure there's many more you can think of.

Yes Benni had his flaws, but don't all players? I'd prefer to reflect on the good and all the joy he brought us during his time at the club. Quite fitting his last game at Ewood for us was the Fulham game, in which he was the best player on the pitch by a country mile and demonstrated some of his sublime ball skills. That begs the question is it a mistake to sell him? in terms of player quality I'd say yes because we'll do well to find a player of a similiar quality for the price and it puts a lot of pressure of Kalinic now if our replacement for McCarthy doesn't fire. In terms of team morale and dressing room harmony? probably yes.

But overall I'd like wish Benni good luck at the Hammers and thank him for all the good memories.

If that was true there is no way we would have held on to him, Chelsea were trying to get him on the cheap to bulk their squad out a bit. If Chelsea had got near double figures (in millions) then he'd have been off like a shot.

Sad way for it to end. He had the footballing talent and intelligence which could compare to some of the Ewood greats', yet his off the field attitude has always left a lot to be desired. The childish way in which he has behaved over the past week shows that he is not right for this club.

He will do well for West Ham, as he did well for us when we first signed him. But in a years' time i doubt the name of Benni McCarthy will be ringing around Upton Park too often.

Up until the New Year, Benni was always a player who I considered to have the footballing ability to overshadow some of his flaws off the pitch, however, now I think its clear that despite how talented he clearly is, his commitment and desire was always lacking. When he was interested, he was almost unplayable but too often you got the feeling that he'd rather be somewhere else.

The way in which he has conducted himself recently will leave a sour taste in the mouth and forever taint the memories of his time here.

Agreed. Hopefully Sam has plan A B and C lined up which will probably bring Beattie back. He has as much incentive to kick start his career as Benni. Home town boy like Dunn coming home. It's as good as it gets unless Eidur is going to come in on loads of wonga which I doubt.

I really hope Benni the Belly doesn't play against us on Saturday. I am not sure I could stand itif he scores.

I can't believe what I am reading here thinking back today first off for going awol he should never get paid as he refused to turn up for training also I see blaming SA for him going is total madness I suppose now if he does not get the call up for the world cup I suppose it is Sam's fault? blame everyone else it is clearly his own fault he is paid a handsome sum to make sure he is fit and available for selection hitting his weight targets yes maybe he did not fit in with BFS system but he still an an obligation to the contract stay fit and challenge whoever is starting for a first team place and I have to say after his antics I would not be at all surprised if the manager of S.Africa does not pick him I have to say I back Sam on his stance because whatever happened there is no excuse for not turning up for training am glad he's gone as he can't cause dressing room unrest we can get someone in who wants to play for the shirt bye bye fatty don't let the barndoor hit you on the way out

cant knock his first season with the club. Since then he hasnt been the same, scored a lot of penalties, and a few goals, but nothing on the impact he made in his first year. Great business for the club, re-couping a large amount of the fee paid. We signed a 'hungry striker', and after his goal filled first year, his hunger for goals changed to a hunger for food.

I'm going to miss him. He was the only player left in his squad who I thought could really produce something out of nothing at any moment. He hasn't done it much lately, but you always knew when he had the ball that you could be about to witness a moment of pure inspiration. I'll probably end up remembering him for the firs season he was here and for the part he played in the Hughes regime.

Very good signing for the club and most likely one of the most talented players that we've ever had. Shame that he couldn't stay focused and fit, but can't help but feel this was mismanaged. Fact of the matter is that he wasn't an Allardyce player and he was never going to be. Even Allardyce owes a lot to Benni, he played a big part in our turn-around in December and January of last year. I hope that we get to see a player of his talent again sometime soon, but I'm not holding my breath. Hopefully he won't score too many at West Ham.

Sad to see him go, but can imagine that when not playing and not getting himself fit he's a disruptive element in the dressing room. Can we get anything proven that Kalinic can work off for the kind of money WH are paying for Benni? Beattie perhaps but imo that's a risky signing, he hasn't proven himself in the top flight for a number of years now.

We always sell before we buy. From a pure business stance that's okay but if yet again we don't have a replacement lined up we're asking for trouble.

Why are we always waiting to be in a rush come end of the transfer windows?
