Al Posted August 26, 2008 Posted August 26, 2008 Watched Pierrepoint on ITV last night. It was really good, an I thought Timothy Spall was brilliant. In case you don't know it was about Albert Pierrepoint, an executioner in the 1940's who managed to hang people in record time, and how he delt with his job and his fame. Yes it was a cracking film, really dark but showed the compassion that he had for his victims. Doing it in record time was not for glory but to spare the murderers the fear of death as much as possible. They were dead before they had time to dwell on the rope around their necks. Not sure whether or not it came across but after he resigned Pierrepoint campaigned against the death penalty saying that it was no more than revenge by society. This was probably brought on by having to hang one of his friends for a crime of passion. A very factual story and brilliantly acted by Timothy Spall.

Billy Castell Posted August 26, 2008 Posted August 26, 2008 Never watch the Bill with someone who works wth the police. My sister is a PC, and she is always commenting on how innacurate and misleading it is. Same with almost any legal based drama. My other sister is a solicitor, and apparently Judge John Deed would be sacked within minutes. RE Al: I did wonder if Pierrepoint changed his views, as you do see that process going on, and then they show the relevant quote at the end that more or less states that he did.

I read his autobiography a few years ago and he did indeed come out against the death penalty - not sure if he actually campaigned against it though , being a very private person . It was true he hanged a bloke he knew from his local pub - an otherwise decent enough chap who kiled his wife in a fit of anger . It was capital punishment used against this type of killer that he found objectionable - a view which would , no doubt , be shared by virtually everyone these days . Maybe if he was around to witness the rise of the innumerable sadistic , random killings in today's more "civilised" society he might have changed his mind again . Or he may have focused on the plight of foxes .....
ABBEY Posted August 26, 2008 Posted August 26, 2008 ive just watched look northwest and scary things that have been planned for the PM and Mr Blair. All in the whalley range area.
sparkspakespoke Posted August 26, 2008 Posted August 26, 2008 Dragons Den. Love that show. How some people go on their thinking they have a chance is beyond me though. They're either drunk or mental to even contemplate the idea that they will get an investment when they dont even have a clue about their own finances.
Anti-Dingle-Brigade Posted August 28, 2008 Posted August 28, 2008 Dont jump on my back if it turns out to be awful but there is a programme starting on Thursday, BBC2 called 'The Cup' (I think about 9PM). I saw a clip for it on Soccer AM and it looked quite good. Got it on Sky + to see anyway I watched it for about 2 minutes and turned it off. What the bloody hell are they doing with the camera, it spins around like a 5 year old is molesting it.
Cocker Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 I watched it for about 2 minutes and turned it off. What the bloody hell are they doing with the camera, it spins around like a 5 year old is molesting it. Its meant to be a kind of fly on the wall documentary (but a comedy). I think its meant to be filmed like his mate is doing it or something. Watched it last week and there were a few laugh out loud gags but didn't think it was that great. I have got last nights one on sky plus so will give it another go over the weekend.

One thing has been bugging me . I've seen the young bloke who played Pierrepoint's soldier assistant in Germany somewhere before but for the life I can't think where . Annoying .
Ray-Von Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 He played Brutus in the "Rome" series on the BBC a while ago I think.
blue phil Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 That's it !! Cheers Ray Von - I can now sleep easy
Bazzanotsogreat Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 Just watching Dispatches on Channel 4………… truly disturbing
Bazzanotsogreat Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 What was it about? Undercover mosque... the return
Anti-Dingle-Brigade Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Without seeing either of them (assuming there were two): It'll be about extremists preaching in mosques. AmIrite?
Bazzanotsogreat Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Without seeing either of them (assuming there were two): It'll be about extremists preaching in mosques. AmIrite? Partly- This programme was more to do with the influence Saudi Arabia is playing within British society.
ABBEY Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 Partly- This programme was more to do with the influence Saudi Arabia is playing within British society. is it on again?
Grabbi Graeme Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 I watched 8 out of ten cats for the the first time in a while, it's still quite funny, they were talking about John Mcain and his decision to appoint Sarah Palin as his running mate. Jimmy Carr: Sarah Palin has 5 children and 1 of them is going to Iraq, so if you are watching a repeat of this programme Sarah Palin has 4 children. Shanun Lock: She (Sarah Palin) is pro life and pro gun, thats like a butcher also being a vet.
grizfoot Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 8 Out Of Ten Cats is good but Mock The Week is even better in current affairs comedy in my opinion, one of the funniest things on TV without doubt.
cn174 Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 8 Out Of Ten Cats is good but Mock The Week is even better in current affairs comedy in my opinion, one of the funniest things on TV without doubt. Frankie Boyle is ace!! I got the Mock the Week Too Hot for TV DVD other day, well worth a watch for a fiver!

I like MOTW as well although this week Lauren Laverne was on it and she seemed a bit lost as she's not a comic.
American Posted September 13, 2008 Posted September 13, 2008 Watched the Tom Cruise Star Stories today - absolutely hilarious!
LeChuck Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 I don't mind Mock The Week but it's incredibly smug (Hugh Dennis especially), and a lot of the stuff that's being passed off as spontaneous feels very contrived. I hate that middle-class cock with the glasses they have on every so often, I don't think he's said one funny thing in any episode.
Flopsy Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 Of course its contrived its just a vehicle to make jokes. With the questions just the set ups. I cant think who the guy with the glasses it, but i like hugh dennis, but then again i like the now show.
Ozz Posted September 15, 2008 Author Posted September 15, 2008 MTW, as i like to call it, is good if only for Frankie Boyle. Very funny guy.
