tonygreenbank Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 Not really into financial matters so apologies if this appears trite and naive to accountants etc. but if Rovers is sold for £63m and the walker family rub their hands and take it and clear off what is it in it for the club and more importantly the fans? Would these 2 business people approve of the decision to cut season ticket prices to 1997 levels? Can we expect a huge hike in ticket prices? I read somewhere that they are checking on Rovers debts to see if they are "manageable". To me that means they will sell off assets to pay those debts which could be players leaving or Brockhall being sold or John Williams going which I think would be a huge blow as he has proved a very good ambassador for the club. I dont want to appear negative but I want to know if this is good news for the club over the long term or is it short-term expediency. I accept that many business people are seeing the Prem as a cash cow but I am not sure that the Prem product has a long life ahead of it as the competition is being reduced year by year.

Eddie Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 I would think that ticket prices would stay the same (or at least hope), you can't realistically expect to see them cut more. The major thing for the fans and the team would be that it could well bring in more investment into the side, possibly even the facilities, and could give us the financial clout required to challenge higher up the league.
blue phil Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 An apparent lifelong supporter who is a "UK citizen who wants to protect the heritage of the club and pump in cash" for transfers gives us everything we could want; someone who'll protect the badge and colors, Ewood Park & Brockhall (more on that below) as well give us the £ to chase down the big 4. The possibility that one of our old directors is involved is also something I find comforting. Well......we'll see. But if it's true & as advertised, then I'm all for it. I would be more confident if this apparent lifelong supporter was working on his own ...and had sufficient money to do so on his own . It's the motives of the other backers that I'm worried about ; what's in it for them , buying into a club they've presumably never heard of until a short while ago ?

We still don't know who the backers are? They are the real money men. Then again, you would have thought our present owners would have to be 100% sure in their minds before selling up.

I agree Phil, but as long as DW is responsible for 50.1% of the financing (which reports seem to indicate) and his intentions are as advertised; it should mean we're safe from those things we fear most. However, it does make you skeptical of the belief that there would be a big cash boost for Sparky's transfer budget.
Exiled in Toronto Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't this latest turn of events largely vindicate many of the rantings of our banned and muzzled friend, Vinjay? I hope the hundreds of posters who drowned him out with their 'Who'd buy us, we're small/crap etc', 'The walker trust handout is the best we'll ever get', 'Of course they are not looking to sell us - Jack's will...blah...drone...zzzzz' are composing their humble pie statements Let him back on this momentous occasion! And if I paid 67 mill for an organisation, I would absolutely definitely not look to keep on the incumbent Chairman AND Managing Director - so it'll be interesting to see the make-up of the new board. Will Richard 'The Walkers have absolutely nothing to do with the running of the club' Matthewman keep his seat under the new regime?? I can't wait to see. The thought of a commited and purposeful ownership providing fresh impetus, coupled with Hughes et al in the engine room, makes me as excited as did the Jack and Kenny days.

Presumably as Mr Matthewman was Jack's son in law he is likely to move on.

What absolute rubbish. This has vindicated nothing that Vinjay said. I don't think anybody was attacking Vinjay over the fact that they genuinely believed that nobody would be looking to buy the club, they were just voicing their opinion. If anything, now that it has come to light that the trustees have been looking to sell for the past few years, it makes Vinjay's view of the trustees not caring about the future of the club or Jack's wishes even more stupid. And that's just for a start...
stuwilky Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 The current owners have been looking to sell the club (or in their own words "looking for new investment") for years - so much so that it was even posted on the official website in the summer of 2005. Anyone who suggested we werent for sale was deluded - I believe I commented that there might as well be a Reeds Rains sign on the back of the BBE at the time.
Roost Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 Word has it that Wayne Hemingway will become the third part of the 'Rovers Triangle' of supporters buying the club. He will be responsible for the new kit and will be designing some sustainable, zero carbon, eco frienly houses down at Brockholes
Billy Castell Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 That would be good. He is a designer of many things by nature and by training, and his favourite stadium (which is a non-league team I can't remember) is a pretty good design. Hopefully that would mean the kits won't be made of horrible nylon as well.

thenodrog Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 Anyway, we'll wait and see what happens. It will be extremely interesting to see just who is putting the money up and obviously how much of it there is, seems such a strange decision for a 30 year old to completely sell up in order to fund such a loss-making operation as a football club. Indeed.

And that's just for a start... Also, Vinjay has a huge problem with John Williams if I remember rightly. Any potential new owners would be mad not to keep him in a similar role to what he has now, he's shown on numerous occasions that he can work the transfer market very well (digging our heels in over Jeffers as a current example).
Billy Castell Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 I'm going to be confident about this Williams guy, just as long as he is a better owner than he is a boxer.

tcj_jones Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 Ste, you complain, but I'm sure you could simply block his email address and tell him not to bother emailing in the future... ...but then, I really want to read the email!

Have to disagree with you mate. I don't think this relates to Vinjay, as I recall his was a problem of an Anti-Walkers campaign running his keyboard with crap about the trust and anything related to them at every opportunity. That's what got him out of here. Why would you not keep the incumbent. If I bought a small business that had done well in the face of competition from several mega corporations I would want to keep it's current officers in place most likely.

Correct me is I'm wrong but most people who got fed up with Vinjay did so not because they believed we'd never get sold. It was more that he criticised everything the club did and blamed it on the Walkers. According to the reports our proposed buyers are looking at our 'manageable debts'. If we'd have spent money like Vinjay wanted, and paid the salaries as well, they might well be walking away from our un-manageable debts.
benhben Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 Does anybody else think this is all too good to be true and infact nothing will happen at all? Heres hoping something will happen soon.

Quite right, he turned everything into a Walker rant, he must be creaming himself at the prospect of this sale though.
