it's not as if we were a one-man team (as some sources liked to suggest).

Even if they do say that its also how other successful clubs see the main striker. Since the news broke about roony's so called injury it was all about rooney - not the team behind him. Manu is a classic example of how one player is singled out as the main man.

The last game in the world cup was rooney the main man - no - Beckham was But still they go on about rooney having the answer to winning the world cup..B$ Sorry but I get really angry when there are other 'proven players' in a team. No one man is an Island you know.

FLB - we haven't only lost Bellamy, we have lost THREE strikers. When Bellamy didn't play, at least we had options.

What's all this talk about us not being able to afford proven strikers? We've done OK in the past.

The only proven strikers I can think of who we have bought since returning to the Premiership are Cole, Yorke and Bellamy. We can't really count the likes of Dickov or Kuqi as having been 'proven' when we bought them. I'm not saying we shouldn't go and spend a lot getting one in but we are unlikely to be able to get three in.

Well, there's three that you mentioned, to start with. We're also after Mido aren't we? I'm sure we can afford him. We're also linked with other players like Sutton, and Heskey, who we can afford. All proven Prem players. There will be others as well.

To get back to this Nugent talk - why him? We would be talking up Gallagher for a signing if he were at Stoke permanently - he scored more goals than Nugent. [not telling you where I got that line from].

Three signed in five seasons - so I can't see us getting in another three all at once. Sure, Mido would be great although Sutton didn't achieve much at Birmingham last season and by all accounts will never be considered by Rovers again. You rate Heskey as a proven Prem striker? 4 goals in 33 Prem games last season while Kuqi scored seven league goals? I took you mentioning proven strikers as being more like Mido than Heskey.

I'm not saying we should sign Nugent, this isn't about him at all, rather that just because a player hasn't played in the Premiership doesn't mean we should write him off.

No were getting confused here, FLB. My reply was to the statements made on here, that we can't afford anyone with Prem experience - therefore we should go down the route of buying from the lower divisions. That is, IMO a recipe for relegation. I'm trying to point out that we can afford proven strikers. Deals are there to be done - loans aren't impossible either.

As for Heskey, yes he is a proven prem striker. He's 28 yrs old and has played in the prem for most of that time. I'd much rather have him than gamble with unproven players and gamble with the drop. Now don't get the idea that I do want him, we can do better, but lower league players are OK if you already have a strong strike force. We have a current strike force that would definately see us going down.

Nugent is a good prospect and certainly worth signing.....for 1.5 million at the VERY most though!!!

I think people are starting to realise just how damn hard its going to be replacing Bellamy with the current 'talent' on offer.

Den, if you think Sutton and Heskey are 'proven' Premiership players, so are Dominic Matteo and Garry Flitcroft. Those two would hardly be at the top of your list if you were the manager of a top six Premiership team seeking a midfielder and defender.

Mido would be a great signing because his showings at Spurs were generally excellent (especially before the African Nations) but I still believe he will turn his nose up at us.

So you would start the season with Kuqi, Gally and two more players plucked from the lower leagues?

Matteo and Flitcroft are past their best. I think you should go back and read my posts properly. You might get the point I'm trying to make.

Actually rather that than Sutton & Heskey instead of the unknowns

Sutton - possibly - Heskey??? NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO id rather you bring Ashley Ward back hed be more effective

If we get Mido then that is a massive step in the right direction. A pacy player to play off him will be more difficult, I would guess we will be looking abroad as there is no one in England who is available who really fits the bill. Defoe is the one who comes to mind but far too expensive.

Hughes wil have his scouts out.

for anyone who reads the LEP, I had a chat with a PNE fan who features on every match report at Nobend and whom is very close to the club. He tells me that NUGENT has already declined a move to Ewood preferring to wait for Everton as that is the club he will move to when the time is right.

Posted

Unless he has some kind of affinity with the club then I cannot understand his logic. He would almost certainly not be in the starting 11 with Beattie and Johnson and Everton were well below our standards last season.

If he joined us now he could be a first team regular, if he played well, and could hope to fill the void of Bellamy.

Aye, have heard that as well. Although if Beattie and Johnson do well, he could be waiting for some time.

nugent is an evertonian.

i agree with den, he's not worth the gamble.

You have completely missed the point Rover6 was trying to make.

I think what he is saying is that Flitcroft has proven Premiership pedigree - through many excellent years with us, however now is not good enough for us. Therefore has 'proven' experience, but isnt what we are looking for now.

Maybe we could convince him to sign by inserting a clause in his contract which allows him to leave for six quid at the end of the season, to any club qualyfying for the CHAMPIONSHIP League. :)
