  1. 1. Have your say on the summer transfer window.

    • Should have had more cash to spend. Almost everyone else did.

What we needed as a statement of intent, and to make everyone sit up and take notice, was to land Bellamy, or alternatively someone of the calibre of Defoe, or at the reported 9m, even lodge a serious bid for Michael Owen. (Regardless of whether he would ever come - the positive intent is there for all to see.)

 What the flip? You do realise do something as stupid as this would make us a laughing stock like oohh... say.. Spurs and a certain Mr. Rivaldo?

I keep holding out hope that Saviola is a realistic target. Most of those around us have spent big money already on a striker and it would only leave the likes of Villa, Portsmouth, Everton and Newcastle to compete with.

I would like to think there are reasonable funds available to Hughesy and he does have complete backing , and personally I like the way we do our business, I'm not into splashing the cash unless its highly necessary and the player is actually worth the money in real terms.

With the gems Hughesy has uncovered thus far, there is proof there that there is no need to splash the cash - think I mentioned a couple of weeks about the interview on Radio Lancs that Hughesy had signalled the intents of the club and that they had identified a couple of targets with back ups if they failed (Bellamy I do believe was one of them).

Likelihood is all our efforts and possible funds are being tied up into that, possibly a big/biggish sigining that wiil cost the pennies but I have full confidence Rovers will get what they after.

Rev, to be fair to you, I don't know if your meaning with the 'signal of intent' was for the overall picture , ie club outwardly showing desire to possibly attract for S/T sales or in the line of what TND has posted re us getting caught out before after we won the league when we stood still thinking we didn't need to improve but I think I kn ow what you are getting at.

I'm with you on that Eddie. I think to get him Hughes would have to move fast and snatch him in the dead of night. In addition to your list above I reckon that Arsenal wouldnt mind him either.

You watch. We will be getting linked with the likes of Camera and Jason 'Pinapple on head' Lee and then the next thing Hughes will do his old trick of signing Saviola - well, we can all dream

EDIT:: Scrub what I just said - click

He has a huge amount of talent, the question is his attitude which always seems to be a bit off.

I agree that he is a huge talent but I reckon anyone with that ability would be upset if they hardley got a game (to be fair, his competition at Barca arnt bad players are they)

I really feel this would be a step back. I think Gally is better than him. If we became really stuck I would rather have Ped or Bentley up front than him

He wouldn't be my first choice as our "big summer signing", but he's certainly a much better option upfront than Paul Gallagher - local connection or not. Camara has got a lot of pace, trickery and flair - qualities we lack upfront in my opinion. Benni's got trickery, Roberts has got pace, but neither of them have both. I can see why we're after him, and in Hughes we trust. Camara could also be an option on one of the wings when we're pushing for a goal.

Remind you of anybody?

Of course.

I was talking about Camara, although the same is true of Saviola.

My other concern with Camara would be the fact that our squad would take a bit of a hit during the African Nations Cup. We could potentially lose Benni, Mokoena, Samba and Camara for a couple of weeks at a very important time of the season.

Thiago Motta is tugayesque ( not as good obviously ^_^ ) but is very silky on the ball and likes to sit back in front of the back four.

As far as Camara is concerned im i right in thinking that he is quite old, he is definatly older than benni ,that would put me off straight away with the 4 m transfer fee been mentioned

And is made of glass. Awesome player, but despite the money City might be offering, I highly doubt him going there. One of the 'big five' or he'll stay at Southern/Central Europe.

According to Wikipedia he's only 6 months older than Benni. Nowhere near the quality IMO.

If we do end up signing Camara I'll be sat in a dark corner saying "trust the manager" to myself for a day or 2 cos I think he's bobbins.

OK, it's hardly like we've gone charging into the transfer market waving a limitless amount of money about but consider this.

Would you rather have Samba or Jagielka?

Would you rather have Rigters or Chopra?

Would you rather have Warnock or Baird?

Would you rather have Bentley or Babel?

Now it's unlikely Sparky can continue 'pulling rabbits out of hats' forever but what there can be no doubt of at this moment is his ability to 'spot' players for the right money.

No-one on this MB (to my mind anyway) knows what kind of a budget is being worked to but what must be agreed is that mediocre players are going for vastly inflated prices. Whether this is (and I'm pretty sure it is) a knock on effect from the TV money then so be it, but I for one prefer to accept the manager (and board's) judgement on players valuation rather than paying the ridiculous sums we're seeing paid at the moment.

I've got full confidence that the right people will be brought in, but it will be for the right price and so as not to upset the equilibrium of the squad (one of our major strengths in my opinion).

We just have to be patient.

But it's not just that they are comparable players...the transfer fees paid for these players leave Mark Hughes/John Williams look like absolutely talent-spotting and financial negotiating geniuses.

Samba - £300k v Jagielka £4m

Rigters - £350k v Chopra £5m

Warnock £1.5m v Baird £3m

Bentley £500k v Babel £11.5m

If I am honest I will take the squad we have now and I'd be happy.

I would hate it, absolutely hate it if we pay a ridiculous fee for an average player. I would say just about everyone in the prem has done it so far. It will come back to haunt them I am sure. I have a feeling January '08 will be a busier window than this summer.

In terms of a striker I say Mido is the man. He will be avaiable and cheap. He is still a young guy - he can't be older than 25. Regardless, of whether he turned us down last summer I don't care. He is quality, but comes with baggage. But so did Bellamy.

A strikeforce of Benni, Mido, Roberts, Derbyshire and Rigters would do nicely for the season (Even with Gallagher and Jeffers excluded). Actually, the more I look at that strikeforce the more I like it. Very balanced, however it lacks serious pace.

I just cant believe how inflated the transfer fees are this summer and for such mediocre players, Chopra, Baird etc. Whats with all the panic-buying? the transfer window will still be open tomorrow and next week and the week after that. I trust Mark Hughes is planning his summer transfers well and waiting to see whos available on the cheap. These clubs ie Liverpool seem to be just making sure they are 'seen' to be buying players, to ensure other managers quake in their books, convincing themselves along with the other top 5 that THIS is the season.
