DanLad Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 A strikeforce of Benni, Mido, Roberts, Derbyshire and Rigters would do nicely for the season (Even with Gallagher and Jeffers excluded). Actually, the more I look at that strikeforce the more I like it. Very balanced, however it lacks serious pace. Roberts and Derbs are both very quick, with the added advantage that Roberts is the size of a small elephant, too.

Ronin Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 Liverpool seem to be just making sure they are 'seen' to be buying players, to ensure other managers quake in their books, convincing themselves along with the other top 5 that THIS is the season. But thing is though, they've been saying that at Liverpool for the past few seasons, especially since they won the Champs League
LeftWinger Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 Roberts and Derbs are both very quick, with the added advantage that Roberts is the size of a small elephant, too. I wouldn't say Derbs was "very quick". I'd say he was quite nippy, but certainly not the pace to terify defenders.
USABlue Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 Simon Garner's take on the transfer situation. Oh dear, I'm sure our Simon's gone and upset Rev .
frosty Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 I wouldn't say Derbs was "very quick". I'd say he was quite nippy, but certainly not the pace to terify defenders. Agreed, I had people saying to me when Derbs first came into the team he 'is quicker than Bellamy'.
DanLad Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 I wouldn't say Derbs was "very quick". I'd say he was quite nippy, but certainly not the pace to terify defenders. Fair comment, really, but Derbs' running off the ball and movement is pretty good, so he makes good use of his 'nippyness' I'd just like to say, on the record, I never said that Derbs was Bellamy quick. I don't think I've ever seen _any_ player as quick as Bellamy, TBH. (Cue a few people instantly shouting me down, as ever on here!)
1864roverite Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 If anyone else has any gripes or negative views about spending or non spending then take a look at the new Northern Ireland 11 ! Foolham have spent close on 17m on players in the past 3 weeks. And what have they bought for that outlay ? For me they have only got one decent player, Davis, the lad from Villa. Liverpoo have spent 50m plus, Manure 50m plus, Spuds 30m or so, Chelski 20m or there abouts, Pompy 14m or there abouts and Arsenal have actually dipped into their pockets. I think Rovers have got this right. Let the clubs spend spend spend and then clubs as shrewd as Rovers can come in at the right time once the big clubs have dished the dosh. it will be interesting to see if any potential big club will seek t spend big on the likes of MGP or Benni Nac NOW. I just dont see it unless City offer massive money.
LeftWinger Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 When you consider the transfer fees at the moment - Nugent 6m, Chopra 5m, Koumas 5.3, Kamara 6 etc... What do you think an acceptable offer for our top players would be? Here are my guesses: McCarthy 15m Bentley 18m Pedersen 14m

I just dont see it unless City offer massive money. I have to say, i dont think Fulham have been unfairly done to with there signings...17m definately sounds like a lot of money, but when you consider it has purchased over half a premiership team, including both of its strikers, in an exceptional over-priced market, then i feel they've done ok. I would be very surprised if Fulham were anywere near the relegation zone next year...something that Sunderland won't acheive, no matter how many Michael Chopra's they sign. I wouldn't be surprised to see them in the top of the table in fact, with a 2 very capable strikers who im sure will form a decent partnership.
daren Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 On that, I thought Leeds couldn't sell anyone just yet? I think that David Healy will do well for Fulham, having seen him play with Northern Ireland, he's a very composed and clever finisher.
1864roverite Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 They have not excactly purchased any player better than they had last season with the exception of davis is the point I was trying to make. The players they have signed dont exactly make the pulse race do they ?
USRoverME Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 The players they have signed dont exactly make the pulse race do they ? I'm guessing their fan's pulses race when the other team is attacking!
Manc Rover Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 When you consider the transfer fees at the moment - Nugent 6m, Chopra 5m, Koumas 5.3, Kamara 6 etc... What do you think an acceptable offer for our top players would be? Here are my guesses: McCarthy 15m Bentley 18m Pedersen 14m Perhaps I'm under-selling our top players but this is my evaluation McCarthy: £7M Bentley: £8M MGP: £6M If they played for top 4 or a London team then their stock would rise but - they play for the Rovers. We should be proud of these players, as we should of the many more that are under-rated in this bullsh*t league!
Fife Rover Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 I would like to think there are reasonable funds available to Hughesy and he does have complete backing , and personally I like the way we do our business, I'm not into splashing the cash unless its highly necessary and the player is actually worth the money in real terms. With the gems Hughesy has uncovered thus far, there is proof there that there is no need to splash the cash - think I mentioned a couple of weeks about the interview on Radio Lancs that Hughesy had signalled the intents of the club and that they had identified a couple of targets with back ups if they failed (Bellamy I do believe was one of them). Likelihood is all our efforts and possible funds are being tied up into that, possibly a big/biggish sigining that wiil cost the pennies but I have full confidence Rovers will get what they after. Rev, to be fair to you, I don't know if your meaning with the 'signal of intent' was for the overall picture , ie club outwardly showing desire to possibly attract for S/T sales or in the line of what TND has posted re us getting caught out before after we won the league when we stood still thinking we didn't need to improve but I think I kn ow what you are getting at. Well I read it as meaning that Blackburn Rovers ARE a club that players or their agents should take very seriously and should be talking to. Not just the top 4, or the "BIG city" clubs.
USABlue Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 MAtty is very quick, not in a pacy sort of way but very quick to go for goal. He is so direct he sniffs a chance and a split second later he's on goal.
philipl Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 When you consider the transfer fees at the moment - Nugent 6m, Chopra 5m, Koumas 5.3, Kamara 6 etc... What do you think an acceptable offer for our top players would be? Here are my guesses: McCarthy 15m Bentley 18m Pedersen 14m Looking at the prices this summer, I'd say add a few million on Benni, take a couple off MGP and I'm sure the JW magic man would screw those sorts of numbers out of a Prem sucker or two.
Fife Rover Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 But it's not just that they are comparable players...the transfer fees paid for these players leave Mark Hughes/John Williams look like absolutely talent-spotting and financial negotiating geniuses. Samba - £300k v Jagielka £4m Rigters - £350k v Chopra £5m Warnock £1.5m v Baird £3m Bentley £500k v Babel £11.5m Has anyone considered the likely outcome if Rovers have a successful season (say top 5 finish)? Firstly clubs are going to look at what Rovers have spent in comparison with many or all of the others, and conclude that transfer fees are far too high. Good players CAN be found at a fraction of the price. Secondly (and bad news for Rovers) MH is going to become the most wanted man in football management.
RoyRover Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 I don't think that we need to splash the cash, Hughes has shown what a good man he is for finding players on the cheap and improving our team, for example Nelsen and Samba. However, it would be nice if Hughes was able to spend a substantial amount of money on a proven player who could really help us push on as a team.
Cocker Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 I imagine Hughes is thinking the same as Moyes..... I agree though I do think that Everton are in the same boat as us really in that they have a good squad and there is no real urgency to strengthen.
Pinch Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 Has anyone considered the likely outcome if Rovers have a successful season (say top 5 finish)? ... (and bad news for Rovers) MH is going to become the most wanted man in football management. I think MH is already up there. I guess eventually the day will come when a club that is bigger/ more attractive than M. City comes sniffing, eh?
des Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 its ok sayiny spend spend spend. but the right players have to available, and if they are not them safe the money until they are. with fans thats easy to say hard to do, but good run clubs do that, and to date with MH, we are a good run club
John Posted July 14, 2007 Posted July 14, 2007 Mirror says we are 'monitoring' Alan Smith's situation (along with Everton). Also see that the Star links Smith with Villa. I am starting to think that he would be an excellent signing for us - he played really well in the later part of the season, and he has a good attitude/work rate. I believe there is more to come from him as a striker and he never really has had a decent opportunity at Man Utd. Fergie called him a modern Sparky Hughes last season.
Paul Mellelieu Posted July 14, 2007 Posted July 14, 2007 Smith looked finished to me last season, when I saw him.
philo Posted July 14, 2007 Posted July 14, 2007 i'm not bothered who we sign as long as we do well in the premiership and uefa cup
