Kai Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 I'm still shocked at the state of Arsenal. They've lost Henry but don't seem to have made any attempt to find a replacement. But the fans still believe they'll qualify for the Champions League. I really think that this is the best time ever for a club to break into the top four and that club could be us. Last season they played over half the season without Henry and van Persie (both who had already scored 10+ goals in the league) and still manged to qualify for the Champions League quite comfortably. What makes you think it will be any different this year? Unless they suddenly lose Fabregas, Arsenal will still be as strong as ever.

brfc fan Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 What makes you think it will be any different this year? They could still loose Wenger and Henry did score the odd important goal last season like against United for example.

Well they are probably like us, no ambition, not backing their manager with cash. I think the Arse will do well, even after Henry.
Lathund Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 I'm still shocked at the state of Arsenal. They've lost Henry but don't seem to have made any attempt to find a replacement. They signed Eduardo da Silva already. Whether he's good enough is a different story, we'll have to wait and see about that, but saying they haven't made any attempt to replace him is a strange thing to say.
philipl Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 I was just thinking that Lathund. Have a sneaking feeling that brfc fan's post is going to end up in the all time embarassing list (with a few of mine before anyone reminds me). Arsenal are incredibly careful about their big signings- they will have watched at least 50 of his games. What are the current odds on da Silva winning the golden boot this season? Probably one of the best value bets going in the pre-season odds.
Ninjathunder Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 just got text off a mate in the press who claims to have contacts at Goodison who's saying that Beattie is on his way to Rovers
RovertheHill Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 I'm not sure I'd be too pleased about Beattie coming back - I think he's arrogant and lazy but without the talent to back it up. He could have been really good if he'd have had the work ethic of Shearer for example. That said, if he did come back then we'd have a core of players who are boyhood fans which surely can only be good for team sprirt?
herbergeehh Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 How old is Beattie? 30 in February according to wikipedia.
joey_big_nose Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 How old is Beattie? 30. Quite old for 2.5m. I can't believe we are paying a fee that high. 1.5m would be more appropriate.
brfc fan Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 30. Quite old for 2.5m. I can't believe we are paying a fee that high. 1.5m would be more appropriate. Benni's 29 going on 30.

Its a bit early to get you knickers in a twist. 4 weeks till the start of the season, six weeks till the window closes. Hughes has always been a late mover for players. Benni's 29 going on 30. He is, but we bought him for 2.5m when he was 28. Beattie has by average standards about two full seasons as a frontline striker (he doesn't strike me as the beckham/savage super fit type who could go til 34-35). On top of that he has been very average for Everton. 2.5m seems like an overvaluation. Hughes must see something in him though.
herbergeehh Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 With Arsenal splashing the cash on Sagna from Auxerre, what about trying to sign Kerrea Gilbert?
Cocker Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 With Arsenal splashing the cash on Sagna from Auxerre, what about trying to sign Kerrea Gilbert? Have you actually seen him play or are you just going off football manager
herbergeehh Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 Seen him briefly, not played FM in about two years.. Which is why I'm asking, I haven't seen him more than one or two games, but from what I've seen he looks like a good prospect.
Billy Castell Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 Disappointed with Beattie's name being mentioned, but you never know, Hughes might work his magic. He has had skill, but mentally he's gone to pot. Maybe we're saving all our money for a bid on Ronaldinho as the Tugay replacement!
EwoodGlory Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 Maybe we're saving all our money for a bid on Ronaldinho as the Tugay replacement! They must be saving it somewhere, We must surely have at least £10m to spend, based on new TV deal and the fact we dont have any urgent debts to pay off. I have the feeling Sparky is leaving the new Central Midfielder to last so he knows exactly how much he has to spend. I hope this might be the case anyway
G Somerset Rover Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 Rather than Gilbert I'd like to see us go for Justin Hoyte. He's got massive potential and will probably see his chances limited this season at Arsenal.
benhben Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 Isnt Beattie a Blackburn fan. Surely playing for the club you support will up your game a notch or two. If Beattie could get back to anything like what he was like at southampton it would be fantastic....but I dont think that will ever happen. Its so frustrating how quiet we are in the transfer market.
joey_big_nose Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 I think we all know that (apart from within the freedom of contract situation) the old RFW does NOT part with players who have anything to offer. All his 'dead wood' has proven in the past to be just that. How about Mark Hughes, Jaap Stam and David Beckham as well?
thenodrog Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 Hughes was on the slide (2nd time he left), Stam and the RFW were daggers drawn as was the entire OT management with Mrs Beckham.

He's been associated with Blackburn since 14 when he went to Queen Elizabeth Grammer School in Blackburn after being born in Lancaster.

John Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 We need some luck in the market - think how close Mido was to signing for us last summer, instead of McCarthy.
