  1. 1. Have your say on the summer transfer window.

    • Should have had more cash to spend. Almost everyone else did.

agree with the play for defoe. with all respect to the other lads that have been mentioned, we should really be aiming higher than that quality of player. defoe and benni as first choice would be a far better and far more exciting prospect than benni with anybody else that we currently have. further more, i don't reckon spuds would be asking that much for him, because of him being the perennial bench warmer at WHL. i suppose the only possible sticking point would be what kind of salary he would want from rovers, if a fee could be agreed. certainly, we must try and get him.

People keep mentioning one of the stumbling blocks over Defoe would be his wages but i'm sure they wouldn't be a problem.

By all accounts, acording to a spurs fan at work, they have a rigid wage structure in place, and if i remember rightly he said Bent has signed on c£35k a week.

So £35 - £40k a week would comfortably fall within our budget for wages. We should test the water with a cheeky bid

P.s the kid at work is a ###### compulsive liar but this is one of the stories that never seems to change so maybe there is a grain of truth :-)

Bobby Zamora is a very average footballer who has never had a season of any real note at the top level.

I could see the logic behind signing Beattie and would have welcomed it as he'd have added something different to our forward line and could have excelled with the delivery he would receive from our wide players. I fail to see what Zamora would bring apart from adding one more body to the squad. There's a reason why Curbishley has been desperately trying to offload the likes of him, Reo-Coker and Harewood and it is that they're mediocre players with big egos and each has an attitude problem.

I would take Zamora. But I don't really understand why we are being linked to these sorts of players unless we are losing someone. Essentially we have a need for one more striker. Rather than going out now and signing someone like Zamora and close off our options I would have thought we wold be concentrating on the likes of Cruz etc.

Saying that, although we think of McCarthy as a big name, he wasn't really when he came to us (despite being a CL winner) yet he was sensational. Maybe Hughes sees taht sort of potential in Zamora?

Anyhow I deeply suspect Roberts will be leaving.

Reo-Coker is not a mediocre player and I predict you shall see him excel at Villa after a bad season with the Hammers.

And Zamora has not had a season of any real note? That''s because he's been tremendously unlucky. At Spurs he didn't get a look in - maybe he wasn't ready but he was off-loaded quickly. At the Hammers, Zamora was hitting form and then Pardew signed Ashton and that ended that. Last season, Zamora was again hitting form and in what all were thinking was a moment of immense serendipity, Pardew discovered Tevez in his team - and Zamora was the unlucky one to make way.

In a stable team in which Zamora was playing regular, he would be an excellent striker.

If this is true I don't mind Zamora. He's a strong and mobile sort and last season nobody fought harder for WHU's cause than him. Zamora seemed obsessed with keeping them up, and thats what will have impressed Hughes imo.

I think I'd rather sign a Beattie/Zamora type player than Defoe. I'm not suggesting for one minute they're as good as Defoe - but they'd be cheaper and with the service from MGP/Bentley - I think they could be very dangerous for us.

You could say that it's typical of the Hughes regime, as we don't hear a sniff of what's going on until it's nearly cut and dried. Don't remember hearing much about Maceo Rigters before hand, and nothing at all about Gunnar Nielsen.

Actually, we heard about gunnar about 2-3months before it happened. Like most hughes signings we do hear about them before they happen, just a long time before. Who were we linked to 2 months ago? That will most likely be the next signing haha

Ah, fair point then. It's probably that it's such a long time ago that it's long forgotten by the time we sign them. Well, in my case anyways :D

Mokeona, Nelsen, Bellamy, Gunnar and who else were touted signings long before they happened and the stories went quiet?

Hughes himself has stated in the past that he will only be looking to bring in players that can improve the current first team. Therefore, I can't imagine him being in for Zamora. If the rumours are true, then I'd be extremely disapointed and pretty despondent. If we are looking to a player that couldn't even hold down a place in a team that fought relegation last season, then how exactly is he good enough to take us forward?

Sky Sports is reporting that Ferguson thinks he'll have to let Alan Smith and Guiseppe Rossi go.

The talk about Smith has been done (over and over) and I've said I'm not too keen on him, while others are, fair enough.

I wonder how much Rossi would cost, though? He's young, been tipped to be a star for the future, and apparently did well in Serie A last season with Parma. Worth an enquiry?

Edit: a quick scouring of t'internet reveals that there are offers already in for Rossi, with Milan (doesn't say which, probably AC) and Napoli the two that people thought had made an offer. Unless he's determined to play in Italy, I should think that we could provide a creditable alternative to Napoli. Not to either of the Milan's, though!

If thats the case Hughes should use all his ManU connections trying to get him...

Rossi is a good player. There's two caveats though.

1) He's physically quite small and while you don't have to be quite so physical in Italy (where he did really well for Parma), it's one of the reasons why Man U are probably considering letting him go.

2) He plays as a 'forward' and not as an out and out striker I believe. I'm not sure that a player of that type fits into our current system. We already have Benni dropping deep all the time, with Rossi in the same team we'd almost certainly have no one in the box ever!
