  1. 1. Have your say on the summer transfer window.

    • Should have had more cash to spend. Almost everyone else did.

Arsenal to nick 2nd place

I beleive very strongly that they will not even get into the top four this season.

I think we've got a better chance then them and I'm saying that because I do think we can have a very good 2007/08 campaign.

If you want to you can pick just as many holes in our current side.

I can't see how thats true. At the very least the spine of Friedel-Nelsen-Savage/Reid-McCarthy is much more solid than that team. And we clearly have far superior wide players in MGP and Bentley. So I would say we have a better team than in 98/99 whichever way you look at it.

To merit your point though the Jansen-Sutton partnership looked promising (although crucially Matty didn't join till January), and people were excited about Davies when we signed him- so I suppose you could argue we could lose McCarthy and Roque be a Davies style flop.

Nonetheless I would confidently argue that we have better players in every single position on the pitch apart from Sutton (Duff/Dunn don't count as they didn't come into plya really till the following season) and, at a push, Henchoz in his younger days would displace Samba. Would you disagree with that?

I agree with that, except based on the 98/99 season, I would rather have Benni than Sutton. 24 goals from the big man might have kept us up!

possibly.

it deserves it's own thread, but ,personally, i'd rather have kept woy as manager, than hire kidd. yes we were bottom, and he'd lost some of the dressing room, but i reckon we'dve got out of it.

woy's downfall was - he went for dublin, and ended up with blake, went for campbell and ended up with dailly (after selling berg), and got rid of rippers, and replaced him perez.

I think that there was a lot of talent in that side, the difference is slight. My point really was that saying that a side that was relegated several seasons ago is better than the one they have now doesn't mean anything.

We were like headless chickens and Woy has to take a big chunk of the blame. Buying this player and that player that dramatically weakened us in pretty much every position. OK he got away with it in his first season but the real performers that year were already at the club (Sutton, Gally, Sherwood etc). Towards the end of that season he started to sign some very dubious players like Davidson (anyone remember his debut v Arsenal?) and the cracks started to appear - 0-4 at Leeds was a classic sign. Then, he inexplicably signed Peacock and got rid of Beattie for Davies (£7M for scoring a couple of good goals for Southampton). When the **** hit the fan, he panicked into signing Dailly and Blake for ridiculous sums of money. He had to go and is the main reason we ended up getting relegated that sason.

I feel depressed just thinking about it!

Seb Perez was a class player, its a pity him and his family couldn't settle in the area so we had to sell him. I think he would've been good. Does anyone remember him getting wrongly sent off vs. Chelsea? That was a joke...some things don't change.

Pleasure wern't some of those listed Kidd signings rather than Woy ones (or is that what you were saying)

I'm sure Kidd signed Ward, Mcateer and Carsley as well as Gillespie and Jansen.

Just off the top of my head but i'm sure they werent Hodgeson signings.

i know who signed who, ricky. ^_^ ward, carsley, mcateer, etc.. were all kidd's signings, for bonkers money. i wasnt meaning woy signed any of them.

the original reply was in respose to the 98/99 squad being better than our current one.

the other posts are about me believing we'dve stayed up if woy was gaffer, (ie i dont think he'dve signed ward and company and he wouldnt have replaced flowers with filan).

Yeah, I remember him - liked him but liked Hakan Unsal more - wish we could have kept him. Remember Rivaldo diving when he kicked the ball at him

I remember it well. Le Saux got sent off in the same incident - and Perez was really unlucky to go for a second yellow IIRC. We lost 4-3 - one of the best games I've ever been to though.

it was on ESPN CLASSIC last week.

we played some really inventive football, but defended abysmally.

perez got sent off, after a couple of run-ins with with lesaux.
