1864roverite Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 I am sure that 9-14k a week will soften the blow of being a squad player ! I wish I could train for 5 days, turn up on match day to sit on a bench in either my kit or tracksuit then go out for the night without a care in the world !! Hard life aint it ????????????? (being sarcastic !! )

(being sarcastic !! ) I think Reidy will be like the new creative midfeilder when he is back! Everyone has short memories season before last he was one of our top performers "a great box to box" midfeilder who I would take over lampard to be fair!!
Mozzer Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 what about d'allesandro?? was on loan at portsmouth ages ago...only young, would cover right wing, central midfield and left wing???
Eddie Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 I think Reidy will be like the new creative midfeilder when he is back! Everyone has short memories season before last he was one of our top performers "a great box to box" midfeilder who I would take over lampard to be fair!! I've never understood this sort of bias. You would seriously take a player who has had one good season over someone who has regularly performed for Chelsea (and even West Ham) for several seasons and shown himself to be one of the best central midfielders in the world? Ok, he hasn't played at his best for England, but you can count on him to score 7-10+ goals (I know someone will pick out a season where he's scored 5 or 6 now) as well as create a few. If anyone ever offered me Reid or Lampard as a swap, with all things being equal (such as wages and bonuses), then there could only be one choice. Reid coming back will improve our midfield, but whilst his energy, drive and shooting should get us more goals from midfield, he still lacks the creativity we need to create goals for our strikers from the middle of the park. It is ok to say that we will make up for a lot of those through our wide play, but I don't think a team can afford to lack pace (which we obviously won't get) and a threat through the middle. If we want to counter our lack of pace we have to pose a threat from all areas, I think we've achieved that in all but central midfield when Tugay isn't playing. It is also a question of depth, we know that all of our midfielders apart from Mokoena are likely to miss games this season (even he will through suspension), so to go into this season with two 30+ central midfielders, one player recovering from a serious injury, one who is injury prone and one who has yet to really prove himself to be good enough (although he was very good for a period of 10 or so games last season) would be a massive risk at one in my opinion is the most important area of a football pitch. No matter how good the players you have in other areas are, if you can't win, keep the ball and pose a threat from the centre of the pitch then you won't be able to regularly dominate and win games. We play our very best football when Tugay is on the pitch and playing well and for me that is why we really need to look for a player who can add to the creativity in the middle. We will probably never be able to bring in another player of his ability (unless we can find someone very young or very old), but to not try would be very stupid in my opinion and we are fast approaching a time when we will have massive holes to fill when Tugay and Savage are gone.
Fife Rover Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 he battled through it though, marky. If he got himself truly fit and lived the lifestyle of a true athlete, he would probably not need to battle his way through it. At least not very often.
John Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 Eddie - completely agree over centre midfield. I have said before, we have too many question marks over that position. I think we can get by without a natural right back but feel centre midfield is more important. But then again, we have 5 (or 6 if you include Bentley) players who are central midfielders, so we have enough numbers. If we are to sign anymore players, you would think a right back would come in - loan would be a good shout.
roversmum Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 Much as I like Reid, I have to say his injury record is worrying.

To be fair YES lampard will get you goals and his corners are pretty neat but I really don't think he adds that much in open play! he is a nice commodity to have he will get the goals and thats where his worth is!! he also takes the pens and free kicks too! Box to Box Reid is a better player tackling, closing down, and passing and general fitness!! I know I am biased but I don't see a central midfielder I would rather have apart from Gerrard.
Eddie Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 Really? There's no other central midfiedler you'd take over Reid in the premiership? What about Essien? Fabregas? Reid is a good player, don't get me wrong, and I'm very happy to see him coming back to fitness and look forward to seeing him in the side, but he has yet to prove that he can perform regularly in the premiership and that injuries won't ruin his career. When he has at least two seasons of high quality premiership play behind him then I'll start to think about comparing him to the likes of Scott Parker, let alone Lampard. For the moment he is a player with the potential to do good things if he can stay clear of injury, but while it is easy to forget just how good he was two seasons ago, it is also easy to forget how he wasn't considered a central midfielder when he first signed for the club and how most Rovers fans would not have been that unhappy if he had been sold before the 2005-2006 season.
JAL Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 I've always wondered what Bret Emmerton would be like playing in the centre of midfield with his pace, but only in certain games as King Kenny used to do with Paul Warhurst (horses for courses).

Ha ha Eddie we will agree to disagree on this one ok yeah I would take fabregas in a flash Essien and Reid V. Similar - as ya can tell I rate him very highly so does SAF or he would not have enquired about him season before last! I agree it remains to be seen if he can emulate the form off season before last but I think he was one of the major reasons we finished 6th!!! Anyway Dunn looked pretty decent against preston I think he will have a good season this season !! Ta for the debate :-)

Don’t get me wrong I think Reid is good player but he isn’t in the class of Essien, Lampard who are amongst the top 10 midfielders in the world

Eddie Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 Several seasons of Premiership and Champions League football as well as the opinions of a host of top football managers seem to indicate otherwise.
Bing Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 Frank Lampard is an effective player with an excellent goals record partly due to the freedom his role in a midfield trio at Chelsea has given him over the last few years. He is not a world class footballer.
Eddie Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 You could say just about the same thing for most world class footballers around in that position by that standard.
pick32 Posted August 8, 2007 Posted August 8, 2007 Lampard is a good player he is no gerrard or kaka but in the next couple of seasons i think nolan, barton and reid can all be just as good if not better than lampard
Yerotsluap Posted August 8, 2007 Posted August 8, 2007 Lampard disappears in the big games, not something a world class player should do
bob fleming Posted August 8, 2007 Posted August 8, 2007 I for one am finding it all a little tedious with Mr. Dunn. Not half as tedious as the many, it would appear, Rovers fans who're sitting around waiting for him to fail. Footballers do get injured, it happens, as far as I'm aware Dunn isn't at this moment in time and hasn't been since he returned. I can hear it now, I'm presuming at some point he'll pick up an injury of sorts, "I told you, he's a wreck, we should never have brought him back, he doesn't look after himself". Same with Bruno Berner, wasn't he once seen in a pub somewhere?
philipl Posted August 8, 2007 Posted August 8, 2007 This anti-Dunn thing seems to be highly irrational. There is at least a logic to rover6's position on Berner even though I disagree with him about it. Anyway, the Independent have either got their Sheffields mixed up or Sheff U might be into push up the price of Francis Jeffers a notch.
Perth_Rover Posted August 8, 2007 Posted August 8, 2007 I don't rate lampard, but my opinion isn't that important.
Cocker Posted August 8, 2007 Posted August 8, 2007 I don't rate lampard, but my opinion isn't that important. My sluth work has discovered that he isnt in your Fantasy Football Team then
frosty Posted August 8, 2007 Posted August 8, 2007 I don't rate lampard, but my opinion isn't that important. I don't rate him either. The only reason why Lampard can't score penalties is because there's nobody there to deflect the ball in for him
philipl Posted August 8, 2007 Posted August 8, 2007 I remember there was quite a chorus on here pressing for Bresciano to be bought down the years. Palermo are convinced his £3m transfer to City has collapsed. Worth a look for Rovers those of you who believe we need a new central midfield presence?
dave birch Posted August 8, 2007 Posted August 8, 2007 Brescia has always struck me as being lightweight. Not so sure how he'd go in a more phsycal environment. Scores some spectacular goals though. I'd rather take Vince Grella, he's got a bit of mongrel in him.
