nicko Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 Brilliant Nicko, so that's potentially 5m plus wages then. Any idea whether this will go straight into the transfer kitty? Count on it. Hopefully there will be incoming news shortly. Although, at this point, I haven't heard any hard-and-fast names. That's as in 'sure things' rather than physically hard and fast.

rebelmswar Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 The updates, as promised. Derby County have made a new bid for Robbie Savage and I believe it has been accepted. He is due down there tomorrow. I think the fee is a guaranteed £1.5 million plus extras on games etc. As of this moment Sunderland have not responded. So I think he goes to Derby. Middlesbrough are sniffing round Jason Roberts in a bigger way than before. I don't think they will pay the £4 million, but could go close...and - this part is a guess - I do wonder about the George Boateng swap possibilities. I should stress that is just a hunch, the rest of the info is on the money. 1.5 million and extras, I am sure that there will be a few board members unhappy with that. What does that mean as a loss to us between what we paid and recieved? Its about 1.5 million isnt it? Boro will sniff hard at Roberts its been on the cards.

What does that mean as a loss to us between what we paid and recieved? Its about 1.5 million isnt it? It's about half of what he was bought for two years ago, but he helped keep the club up - priceless - and did his bit in getting them into Europe. Sav is also two years older and, if the extras come in, then it won't be a major loss. I would not criticise anyone on the price. And I think it's one of those you just take on the chin. The player wants games, which is no problem, and the manager obviously thinks he can get better. Move on.

I am confident that Hughes will find a good replacment, fingers crossed for Hunt.
herbergeehh Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 So that's two positions to fill, and about five millions to spend.. If we can fill one of them cheaply, preferably the striker position since we only need a squad player, we can sign a quality player for our midfield. Looking forward to seeing what Hughes can do, again

nicko Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 That's Nathan Tyson & Gary Speed out of the question then.... I do the funnies...
rovers_rob Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 Sav has done his job for us and I think it is good business but there is no way Hughes would let Sav go if he didn't have a plan. Hopefully we can get someone in like Sidwell but Boateng would be a decent short term replacement.
revolutionrock! Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 Do you think the dingles will keep hold of Lafferty ? I have seen him play a few times and I reckon he could do well in the prem. Shut the hell up. Cant believe you said that  He's hardly ripping the fizzy pop league up now is he! Kyle Laf-At-Me , no chance.
OJRovers Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 I think Sidwell would be great, and is not too far fetched because he prob knows our coach from his Arsenal days - lets keep figures crossed. Anyway I think Rovers just need someone to come in and give everyone a bit of a lift, we have the players but we're just a bit down on confidence. At the start of the season we showed what was possible if we play with belief. I remember David Thompson coming in I think mid-season and just giving everyone a lift - as did Robbie / Bentley when we signed them - I think this is all that is needed.
Exiled_Rover Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 The Bulgarian striker is in today, first impressions OK but may be a little similar to Matt Derbyshire. Faster I'd imagine, unless Wiki is lying to us.

Boatengs a good defensive holding midfielder - but must be on good wages at Boro which I doubt we would match - I think they paid nearly 5 million for him from Villa! He's also 33 too!
revolutionrock! Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 Boatengs, bad signing. Would cost 3m+ at least , and his wages would be mammoth. On Sidwell, a great signing in my mind. I think him and Tugay togethor would work extremely well. On Cisse, not sure, fast but his finishing isnt the best. On Huddlestone, get him, i really rate this guy. But after Ramos's recent comments about how well hes been working to shift the weight , i think he may be out of price range.
EwoodGlory Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 Going off this Sparky will do wonders with £5m. Make you feel kind of proud when you look at what teams like Spurs, Newcastle and Sunderland etc. have spent.
herbergeehh Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 I seem to remember McClaren giving him an insane 4 year contract last summer? A good player, but at 33 he should not be expensive.
EwoodGlory Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 Reports that Anelka fee is agreed with Chelsea according to vital football anyway...

Make you feel kind of proud when you look at what teams like Spurs, Newcastle and Sunderland etc. have spent. Can that really be right though? Where does the £11.75m come from, as Dunn and Duff were sold the year before. Probably just my memory failing me, but apart from the £4-5m from Ferguson I can't really think how we'd make that kind of profit.
mickygray316 Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 even though i know its good business, i am sad to see savage go
Taggart Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 Thanks for the updates as always Nicko, much appreciated and always an interesting read. I would be extremely happy with a move for Sidwell - but as you stated you don`t see too much substance yet in this which is unfortunate. Just to confirm, is the 21 year old striker over for a trial or to discuss terms as stated by his club ? I see Pompey have signed another striker, does that mean that Nugent may be available on the cheap I wonder............ I think we need a freshen up at Ewood, with more cover at right back (ideally with some sort of pace) a central midfielder, and a striker to repalce Roberts when he fills his boots and goes.............. I will be sad to see both go, especially Sav who has been loyal, committed and a hard working and keeps the lads amused on the training ground and the dressing room and wish him all the best :0)

Rovers transfer history Change season by the drop-down menu near the bottom of the page. Still a very good record compared to others

Lathund Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 That list would show £1.75m profit. Probably pressed the "1" key too hard It is nonetheless a very impressive record indeed, even if there would be other errors.
Paul Mellelieu Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 Thanks E Glory. That table should be posted to the site's home page to remind everyone the miracle being performed by the club's management team
joey_big_nose Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 I love that transfer spending table. Im sure there are inaccuracies (so many taransfers are 'undisclosed') but the gist is right. Hughes has done wonders. c. 5m for Roberts and Savage would be terrific business. It will be interesting to see what we could do with it... the temptation would be to lash it out on one decent player but in reality we need a striker, a central midfielder, a right back, possibly a centreback (depending on Nelsen's prospects), possibly a left winger (depending on Pedersen's and Treacy's). Sparky is going to have to work a few miracles.
