USABlue Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 Sorry. Can't agree with that...Portsmouth aren't a more attractive proposition than Newcastle at all. Newcastle are a far bigger club with a large ground that would be filled with fans. There always remains the potential there which could attract many a manager who believes they could be the one to finally get the club winning a trophy again. If Redknapp goes to Newcastle then I think we can rest easy. You are right about Newcastle being bigger etc. However, Portsmouth, have money to spend, great fans who fill the ground and new ground developments in the offing, I don't think they are un attractive at all.

USABlue Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 Nicko, do you know if we have shown any interest in James McFadden? I personally think he'd be an excellent signing. Any idea what Everton want for him? Didn't some one from this continent bring this up a few weeks back?
Cocker Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 You are right about Newcastle being bigger etc. However, Portsmouth, have money to spend Really? I am not all that sure about that. I think Ashley has a few bob to splash out and Happy Harry wont be short of kitty if he goes there.
philipl Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 Mike Ashley is "only" offering a £20m transfer kitty so that is a bit less than Pompey's last summer spending. Klinsmann has got the Bayern job apparently. It also seems that the market is beginning to wake up after a very sleepy start to the transfer window.
Rover down South Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 I get this feeling we have no money to spend on new players. In hindsight, maybe we should of cashed in on Pedersen & McCarthy in the summer. Then we could afford players like Diarra, McFadden etc. What would we get for McCarthy & Pedersen now? Would anyone still be interested?
robborover Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 Portsmouth fans are getting worried. Unconfirmed sightings of Redknapp at Southampton airport last night. Pompey have a few problems as they still don't have a modern stadium and training facilities and a lot of players will be leaving for Africa. Rumours are that they don't have much money to spend either. So it all rests on Mrs Redknapp. Still means that we have a manager, but only a couple of midfielders!
they_think_its_all_rover Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 It's funny Newcastle are going after Redknapp... a man who's managing a team that hadnt' scored at home since October
rossyste Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 Betting suspended on betfair for the toon job.........expect something concrete in next couple of hours
they_think_its_all_rover Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 Hughes distanced himself from Newcastle job on SkySports website... cant get link to work though. its on the homepage.
LeftWinger Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 Betting suspended on betfair for the toon job.........expect something concrete in next couple of hours It isn't suspended. Redknapp is 1.6 and Hughes eased out to 13.5 - the same price as Jol.
robborover Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 Hughes distanced himself from Newcastle job on SkySports website... cant get link to work though. its on the homepage. Shame he didn't do that yesterday though!

1864roverite Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 Rovers have officially announced a non contact from NUFC with Hughes indicating a wish to stay at BRFC.
Hasta Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 It's not quite an "I'm stopping at Blackburn" quote from Hughes but in these situations it's as close as you'll get. Still begs the question what if there is contact from Newcastle?
ABBEY Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 who remembers a certain mr s doing something similar when the shirts went on sale...must admit tho feelin a bit more happier this morning

Rover 'til I die Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 hughes plays down newcastle link hmmm If I'm being honest Hughes' comments seem less committed than Harry's at the moment.
herbergeehh Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 I'm starting to think Hughes did want the job, but hopefully I am wrong..
philipl Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 Shame he didn't do that yesterday though! There is a vast gulf between the instant paranoia of a messageboard and the real world. John Williams issued his denial as soon as it made most sense to do so- immediately after Pompey had issued their's. To do so earlier would have been utterly counter-productive. Equally, Mark Hughes has issued his denial as soon as whole articles were devoted to speculative links between him and the Newcastle job. Again, it would have been totally bonkers to do so any earlier. So the club and manager have both moved with very commendable speed with their denials. It is also highly significant that in effect Hughes has reprimanded Ashley three times in his statement. 1) Saying that there is a strong link between Manager and Board at Rovers and that is not something to be given up lightly by moving. (ie relations between board and manager at Newcastle probably are not as good) 2) By saying that Allardyce was not given enough time (ie I don't trust you not to fire the next manager on a whim either) 3) Observing that Allardyce will be tracked by many Premiership Chairmen now (ie Allardyce is a damned good manager and Ashley's judgement is flawed). That is a pretty hefty rebuff from Hughes and is strong as it comes without signalling that Hughes is willing to criticise owners/chairmen in public which is simply not done without paying a very heavy price in football.
