Some facts on Mark Hughes.

He will have known that Redknapp was first choice. His agent, Dennis Roache, was the man negotiating the Newcastle-Redknapp contract terms.

So he knows he is second choice, although I must admit that he also knows about the size of the money on offer.

However, I gather that he is NOT Mike Ashley's type...a bit too 'straight.'

That's two very good reasons for this not happening.

So, stop fretting.

Its a very worrying time and it could go either way. If he gets offered the job hes got such a big decision to make. Im sure he loves his job here but its probably the most important decision of his career and if i was in his shoes i would definately be considering the job. He has done an absolutely outstanding job here with very little money so imagine what he could do with a bit of financial backing. He has made it clear on a few occasions that hes not so happy with our half empty stadium. At Newcastle he will get money and 60k fans. Im sure this time whoever they appoint they will give him time. Allardyce was Freddy Shepherds apointment, not the current board so its hard for them to back someone who is doing badly and isnt their man.

Hughes must be worried with our current form and our squad seems to have deteriorated. He needs players like Nelsen, Pedersen and McCarthy to perform and they arent doing that. It would be a gamble for him to stay with us because if things carry on the way they are we will finish in the bottom half....this will not help his CV and will ruin his chances of getting a big job in the near future. Newcastle is a big job, they have won nothing and i know they think they are better than they are but they have massive potential and the manager who finally wins something with them will have a golden CV to his name. He may feel he has taken us as far as he can with the resources available. He wants champions league and i honeslty cant see it happening at rovers.

I think Mark Hughes deserves his chance to manage a big club and have a crack at doing what so many have failed to do. I fear that if he stays and it all goes wrong...possible...he will ruin his chance and i wouldnt want this to happen. Hes done a great job for us and i think he may want to save his CV now rather than gamble and wait. Much like Souness...who also gave us some good times and jumped ship, savign his cv, when it all went sour, leaving us bottom.

Many people on here are worried that if this does happen 'who will want to manage us after the last 2 months'...come on...there are 20 top jobs in this country and 8 managers have been sacked already. Many good managers would love to manage our club after what we have achieved in the last 6 years. I would be really upset if Hughes left but nobody is bigger than the club.

For me, its how the result goes tomorrow. I think the decision will be made by the players. Another defeat and woeful performance would imo send hughes to newcastle.

Yes,

For what it's worth I think they will go for Jol or maybe Houllier.

If Hughes wants to go so be it. Bearing in mind our recent dreadful performances he may have the sack coming soon anyway. Most managers have a natural life of 3-5 years and he's getting to that point now.

The BIG decision is who replaces him.

We will have to get Tony Parkes back in while we decide.....

Oh come on Rev that is a ridiculous comment and you know it. To build a competitive side without spending huge amount of cash can only boost a persons career. Scraping the barrel a bit there to have a dig at the trustees for us having no dosh.

Only if you can keep that competitive side functioning effectively ad infinitum on no money. Once it starts going pear shaped it can't possibly reflect well on the manager concerned. Hughes has warned several times already he can't be expected to pull rabbits out of hats indefinitely.

To borrow a Stan Ternent expression, we seem to be expecting our "Ferrari" to run at peak performance without servicing it properly, or at all.

How do you know the Trustees have no dosh anyway? They could be sitting on huge assets for all we know.

Had Ashley been in the UK, no doubt JW's phone would have rung by now- maybe it has done.

But Hughes is second favourite again but behind Shearer this time.

Either Ashley does his shirt wearing on the terraces for show or he is not immune to what the fans and media are saying.

Ashley and Mort are now looking damaged goods after sacking Allardyce to near universal criticism outside of Newcastle and not having the replacement ready to complete ridicule from inside and outside Newcastle.

Redknapp was not wanted by the Toon faithful, neither very clearly is Hughes. Ashley's nightmare after having failed to foist his man on the toon army would be to go for Hughes publicly and have a second unwanted manager turn him down.

The rod Ashley has created for his own back is that the Toon hysteria behind Shearer or a Keegan/Shearer "dream" ticket (and it would be for the rest of the Premiership) means Ashley either suffers permanent dimmunition of the favour he seems to be seeking (not that upsetting people has ever bothered him) or produces a Mourinho/Lippi or most likely Jol out of the hat complete with signed contract.

You serious? No way would he be sacked, Hughes is not the problem and JW knows that. He's close to flawless in the market in his time as Blackburn manager, and we've been in the top 10 all year, only 3 points behind 6th place as we speak. I take it you're writing in fear of Hughes leaving more than anything else, always good to be able to say "he was leaving anyway" isn't it?

I`m surprised we are signing a centre half to be honest - I though the money would focus on centre mid, with Sav gone and the passing maestro Moko (sarcasm) on African Nations duty ?

Will we be impressed with Hughes pulling power for this signing and is the person good enough to displace Samba or Nelson at the back regulary or is he back-up quality ?

Any news or thoughts on Rovers transfer targets as hughes has come forth and said that they have enquiries out about them ?

I've seen nothing from Shearer to indicate he is the least bit interested in the Newcastle job.

BTW if he ever was to go into management, Dalglish would be the ideal "older head" to work alongside. They seemed to have a near father/ son relationship at Ewood.

That particular combination obviously wouldn't wash at Newcastle though.

I'll give you that, on all three points. Like the Ferrari analagy. Sadly I think the people holding the purse strings think Hughes can pull the wabbits out indefinately them wascals. I only see them wanting to dig deep when it does go pear shaped in an attempt to salvage Prem status. You and I both know that would be too late.

It has also crossed my mind lately about the players and their attitude, surely if they knew they could be replaced at the drop of a hat (not the one with the wabbits) they may be just a little more tuned in.

Someone just put a big amount up to lay Hughes on Betfair. His price will drift now.

That doesn't necessarily mean anything, the person in question might have backed him at longer odds a couple of days ago and might be closing the bet off for a guaranteed profit.

Off to a game now, so this will be the final word...and you know I like a tease.

However I believe I know who Newcastle United want.

And it is NOT Mark Hughes.

May be able to name him in the morning. Waiting on one call.

In the meantime, cheer up FFS.

I remember when Mark came JW saying that he was surprised at the number of high-quality applications the club received for the post. I am willing to bet that scenario would repeat itself if the worst happened.

I won't have the valium, thanks. Got a bit of trouble with gallstones at the moment.

......Who can Nicko mean?..............
