if hughes does leave then as many people has said, the club is showing some real unambitiousness.... we need to keep him, theres no one that can match him frankly. we don't have much money to spend which will make many good managers turn the job down and we will again have to go out on a limb and hope for the best with an unknown manager.

Geeeeeeeesh !!!! can't we set our sights any higher than that ?? Saints preserve us !

I disagree trueblue, I think he's exactly what we need i.e. Midfield cover, the few times I've seen him I've rated him, he's big, he's quick and he doesn't shirk a challenge and the main point IMO is "In Hughes we trust"

See Nicko was on the Money again, well done Nicko

I fully expect Newcastle will make an official approach today. Then it is really upto Hughes if he wants to go, from what I have read I get the impression that he will expect some gurantees of no board inteference in team affairs and then he'll be off. Really gutted because I believe he is the best young manager in the country and the best thing to happen to Rovers in the last 10 years.

As for what happens post Hughes then I would go for Tony Adams. Now many of you may laugh, but from what I have heard from him I have been mega impressed and I know for sure that Arsene Wenger is firmly of the opinion that Adam's is going to be a top, top manager. Adam's has got all of his coaching qualifications, he has spent lots of time travelling around Europe to different clubs learning about how they coach etc and I think he would be the man to continue the good work that Hughes has started at Rovers.

Did what you read include this from Sky after the game?

"I have the support from the chairman (John Williams) and the board," explained Hughes. "That is something you do not give up lightly.

"The fact is I have continuity here and a good situation. Things are in place and I am very conscious of that.

"All I am trying to do is my job to the best of my ability with the help of my staff. I am Blackburn manager and have a job to do here.

"In football you need time and I have been given that. I am proud to be manager of this club."

Yes but he had 4 opportunities after the game yesterday (Sky Interview, BBC Interview, Radio 5 Live and Press Conference) each time he could have said that he would not be interested in the Newcastle job if offered to him, each time he didn't. To me that sounded like that at the very least he is interested in talking to Newcastle if an approach is made.

i wish sparky would read what most newcastle fans have to say about him:

"Scott writes in saying:

I wouldnt be too keen on Shearer at the moment but the thought of appointing Hughes puts the fear of god into me, I hate him with a passion. If it has to be a UK manager, god knows why? Shearer would have to be the man ! If Hughes is appointed I will give my season ticket to one of the kids where I live !"

come on sparky...we appreciate you alot! don't walk into the hell hole of newcastle, please!

nicko any news on the hughes to newcastle front? or on any transfer?

hughes did say that they will some incoming soon...

The wild card in all this is how the Rovers owners and board will react. In this respect you have an entreprenurial heavyweight up against a legal/managerial heavyweight and other than the entrepreneur chucking endless cash at it, I'd ordinarilly back a team of city-trained Jersey lawyers to prevail over an entrepreneur playing in a world he doesn't know as well as he thinks he does.

Isn't the Newcastle chairman Chris Mort a heavyweight London solicitor?

Seconded. Similar style of management and approach to Hughes. Balanced, forward thinking. Will know Eddy and the coaching staff. If Hughes does leave I think he would be the logical choice to continue Sparky's work. I would put money on us approaching him.

If we got someone in like Allerdyce we would have to change things around massivley to suit his style. Adams I think would do better with what we have.

Great shout Kamy. But Hughes ain't gone yet.

Morning, just been sifting through the papers.

One thing is certain, like I said yesterday, Mark Hughes would talk to Newcastle if approached.

But some of the other 'information' is tosh.

The Sun claim Hughes was approached on Friday through a third party when Redknapp said 'no.' Trash. Redknapp did not say no until Saturday morning. The rest of the story is made up of the manager's 'never say never stuff.'

The Mirror is flimsy and only backed up by the manager's comments.

I am still to be convinced that Newcastle owner Mike Ashley has NOT decided it's Sparky.

On the transfer front...Amdy Faye is due in this week. That was the name I was on about yesterday. For once, nobody guessed it. A small triumph....

This is a revealing quote from a genuine Newcastle United source in a couple of papers who have been quite decent on the story.

"Harry Redknapp was never the only name in the frame. There is a presumption that he was first choice but there is a difference between a job interview and a job offer. We have spoken to more than one person, we will be speaking to more people and it should not be narrowed down to people from these shores."

The first part is a lie and obviously covering up their embarassment. Allardyce was sacked because they were told Redknapp was coming.

The second part may be true. I think they will look around.

So, Sparky ain't a done deal yet. However the next few days are going to be decisive...and anxious.

He'd be a fool not to. It's win win for him.

1. He finds out whats on offer i.e. his worth.

and

2. He uses that to his own advantage to lever salary terms / purchasing power out of our board.

We've just seen Arry blatantly do this so it's hardly suprising if Sparky does likewise.

I've notice good support on betfair for Keegan.

In the last 10 minutes - most of the money placed on Betfair has gone on Hughes, Shearer and Keegan.

Hughes - £1,086

Shearer - £348

Keegan - £3,315

I'm bored at work - but interesting to see that most of the money is going on KK. If it had just been Newcastle fans backing who they wanted - why hasn't Shearer had more support? I hope they do move for Keegan - everyone would be happy then.

There has been more that 5.3 million pounds bet on this market - and betfair takes a percentage of all that. Why the hell didn't I think of this idea?!?!

We must have some money to spend for gods sake, all prem teams are getting extra £20m tv money, and our board used some of that to get cheaper tickets, in my estimations a loss of at the most £2m

so what about the other £18m

roy keane has spent £36m at a club that was almost in adminstration over a year ago...
