modes98 Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Any chance they may make an approach for Martin O'Neill? He is comfy at Villa. He likes a challenge but i don't think he is stupid enough to move from a safe seat at Villa for teh next 3 or 4 years to the hot coals at Newcastle and be sacked inside 2 years.

Exiled_Rover Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Villa are as big a club as Newcastle too, and Randy isn't shy about throwing his money around. There's no incentive for O'Neill to look elsewhere at the moment.
LeftWinger Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 I would have to say this is worth a read... http://www.thisisblackburn.co.uk/display.var.1962940.0..php Draw your own conclusions. I like what someone has posted under that article. Something along the lines of Ashley wanting attractive football - and maybe our bully-boy reputation could go in our favour here.

I think most of us realise that Sparky wants to at the very least talk to Newcastle but his insistence that the matter is somehow out of his hands is annoying. It's entirely in his hands.

You could end the speculation by saying right here and right now that you want to stay and you don't want to go to Newcastle. "That's a hypothetical question and I don't answer hypothetical questions.

Bloody hell, the press know how to push an issue don't they! Hughes is clearly interested in the job, but doesn't want to distance himself from his current employers by saying he'd take it if offered.
nicko Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Bloody hell, the press know how to push an issue don't they! Hughes is clearly interested in the job, but doesn't want to distance himself from his current employers by saying he'd take it if offered. It was a vintage press conference. By the way, the Newcastle press are not exactly tipping Sparky as favourite. Shearer-obsessed as usual.
adopted scouser Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 It was a vintage press conference. By the way, the Newcastle press are not exactly tipping Sparky as favourite. Shearer-obsessed as usual. Let's hope so. He will always be a Nuttall street hero but a manager ?

tony gale's mic Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 he does seem to be pushing the whole 'it's not my decision, it's up to the chairman' thing though doesnt he? maybe he would be interested in talking to newcastle and seeing what they had to offer, but the ultimate decision would be down to john williams as to whether he left or not, and he wouldnt buy out his contract or anything like that.

RevidgeBlue Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 he wouldnt buy out his contract or anything like that. Newcastle would though.
nicko Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Newcastle United would have paid £3 million or more in compensation for Redknapp. So buying out Sparky's get-out clause would not be a problem, although I don't have the exact figure. However, I stress, it's not at that stage yet.
RevidgeBlue Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 The only guide I take slightly more notice than Nicko is the Betting on Betfair and he's drifting quite nicely to 3-1 this morning after being 6\4 last night Still a lot shorter than Keegan and Shearer, both around 6/1. Houllier is an interesting one. He has come right in over the last couple of days from nowhere to 4th favourite at 11/1. If you recall I had a tip for him from someone who claims to know the Ashleys well before Sam got sacked at the start of December.
Cheshireblue Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Shearer is on a beach in Barbados, and having had a conversation with his agrent on friday relayed to me he is not about to get off his beach and head back to Newcastle. It is the worst job in the Premiership. Idiotic fans with expectations way above the teams ability to deliver and a nightmare owner with no experience, no patience and very little appetite to invest in the team. He bought the club to turn it for a fast buck, but if the rumours about Liverpool are true, then he might have to hang onto it for a bit longer than he had hoped. It couldn't happen to a nicer chap. Hughes would be mad to go up there. It needs a new team, at least 3-5 years to turn it around and that assumes you get the support you need from Ashley. If he is serious about getting the Old Trafford job then he would be well advised to stay put, keep doing good things with Rovers and then wait until Fergie goes. It can only be this season or next when the old sweaty @#/? finally goes and Hughes cannot possibly hope to enhance his reputation in that time at a club that has proved a graveyard for each of its last 10 managers.
LeftWinger Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 The Keegan interview is having the desired effect! What did Keegan say? Souness said he'd take the job on again yesterday
Dave S Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 This is a revealing quote from a genuine Newcastle United source in a couple of papers who have been quite decent on the story. "Harry Redknapp was never the only name in the frame. There is a presumption that he was first choice but there is a difference between a job interview and a job offer. We have spoken to more than one person, we will be speaking to more people and it should not be narrowed down to people from these shores." The first part is a lie and obviously covering up their embarassment. Allardyce was sacked because they were told Redknapp was coming. The second part may be true. I think they will look around. So, Sparky ain't a done deal yet. However the next few days are going to be decisive...and anxious. They could be covering their backsides. Simply stating that there are managers in the frame for the job, so next time they are turned down it is all part of the interview process.
modes98 Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 The only guide I take slightly more notice than Nicko is the Betting on Betfair and he's drifting quite nicely to 3-1 this morning after being 6\4 last night Betfair forums are convinced it is not Hughes that newcastle want. What did Keegan say? Souness said he'd take the job on again yesterday He refused to rule himself out of anything. Therefore by the same logic we apply to Hughes he is interested in the job.
1864roverite Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Amady Faye ????????????????? Please Please Please, LEAVE this player alone. Keegan refused to rule himself in or out of the running for the NUFC job.

thenodrog Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Amady Faye ????????????????? Faye? I seem to rem that we were linked with him when he went to Newcastle.

It needs a new team, at least 3-5 years to turn it around and that assumes you get the support you need from Ashley. Don't want to talk Hughes into the job but Souness left us in a far worse state than Newcastle are in and Hughes turned that round in twelve months on a fraction of the backing he would receive up there.
LeftWinger Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 If Ashley really wants to impress the fans - he'll appoint Keegan with Shearer his number 2.
bob fleming Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 If Ashley really wants to impress the fans - he'll appoint Keegan with Shearer his number 2. That really is the best thing he could do. A sensible solution.

True Rev, but he played some awful football doing it. We appreciated (hoped) it was a means to an end and gave Hughes the time to improve the football on offer the season after, which he did. Would the Newcastle fans be willing to suffer even 3 months of football like we watched in Hughes first season?
