[Archived] Nicko's Thread

Recommended Posts

From the quotes I've heard - I don't think he particularly changed his view on the Newcastle position - just the questions put to him became more direct.

I was at his press conference on Friday and it wasn't really a serious option in his view, so he was frank about the club's financial position and his own views on the future.

However on Sunday afternoon the manager changed. He was basically open to offers. He was asked straight to rule himself out and he did not.

There's been enough confusion already...let's get this one straight.

Sparky was NOT in the frame on Saturday. I'm not sure he is now.

What has changed is that Mark Hughes went from distancing himself on Friday when he thought Redknapp was getting it to the refusal to rule it out on Sunday.

Fair enough Nicko. Confusion?? I was thinking bedlam.

Just heard a fabulous Newcastle United line...I would normally save it back for the paper, but here goes.

Shearer wants the job.

Keegan wants the job.

However the two legends don't want to work together and would both want to be 'number one.'

This is from an excellent source and I can barely type for laughing.

The dream ticket does not sound as if it is such a dream after all.

Priceless.

Is this good news? I could only see them appointing Keegan to help Shearer - and only see them appointing Shearer with AN Other. This could be bad news for us I think.

But you can't prove a positive with a negative. Refusing to rule something out does not have to equal that he wants it.

Also, I don't see the major change in Hughes words from Friday to now. Many people were worried then and complaining that he wasn't ruling himself out and I think nicko's interpretation of Hughes has changed more than the Welshman's tone.

Besides it doesn't make sense, if he was distancing himself on Friday when he thought Harry had the job why didn't he concede that Harry might not take it? Afterall, he was number 2 favorite then so why rule yourself out whilst the possibility was still there? Furthermore, if Newcastle haven't come calling then why rule your self in when you've had no contact?

Unless there has been some kind of contact then I can't see Hughes changing his tone just because of Redknapp.

Finally there are two good reasons i think why Hughes wouldn't rule himself out but may stay at Rovers.

1) He is annoyed at being constantly linked with other jobs just because the media assumes Rovers are unfashionable. So he is giving the media the run around for a change.

2) He has been linked with Man City/Spurs before but never got the call, this time he wants to see if he really is wanted, an ego booster if you like.

It does matter when you have the chance to rule yourself out of the race...and won't do it.

Until that happens you will have all of this excitement.

:rover: is it true rovers have no money?i thought finishing last in the premier was worth 30 million,we need to release some money to sparky now, show him we are forward thinking :brfcsmilie:

Yes, can some one please explain why we don't have any money -- ok so we may be 20m running costs in debt but we haven't spent anything and must be raking in 15-30m a year -- I'm sure every other prem club must owe more than 20m (apart from big 4 obviously)

But how can you rule yourself out of something you're not in? Has Sir Alex ruled himself out or Wenger? No because they've had no need to and nor has Sparky other than the media printing stories which he has no control over. May be when a job comes up all managers should be forced to send a memo to the media ruling themselves out?

The way I look at it, Hughes has done nothing different top when the Tottenham and City jobs were being mooted. I really think his comments can be taken either way and should be treated as "ambigious" at worst and not make assumptions based on a negative.

Saying Hughes is interested because he didn't rule himself out is akin to the thiest argument that you can't prove God doesn't exist so therefore he must do.

WITH RESPECT, I WAS THERE...AND EVERY OTHER NEWSPAPER SEEMS TO HAVE NOTICED THE SAME.

THERE NEVER WAS A NUMBER TWO CHOICE...SPARKY KNEW THAT REDKNAPP WAS THE ONE AND ONLY. YOU RULE YOURSLEF OUT IF YOU DON'T WANT TO GO.

Unless there has been some kind of contact then I can't see Hughes changing his tone just because of Redknapp.

THAT IS PLAIN DAFT.

HE KNEW THERE WERE OTHER PEOPLE LINED UP FOR THOSE TWO JOBS...RIGHT NOW NEWCASTLE HAVE NO PLAN B.

nicko, you say shearer and keegan both want the job..surely they are the favourite now then???

Shearer wants it, Keegan wants it, but they don't want to work together.

So that rules out the dream ticket that the Geordies are getting all excited about.

I don't think Ashley wants Shearer because he is inexperienced. He might have taken him with Keegan. But old King Kev wants to be number one himself and I am not sure Ashley would like that idea.

He could have taken them together, but sometimes you can't get what you want.

As it stands Newcastle United do not appear to have any idea what to do next, so sadly that means your manager has to be a live contender - along with a few others.

Then maybe Alan would want his buddy Mike Newell to help him out.

Or his other "mate" Chris Sutton ! ! !

Or perhaps his even better "friend" Roy Keane...hehehehehe

apparntly, rovers had scouts at the ajax v az game-but it is unclear who they were watching...

maybe nicko you could find out..

There were a few clubs over to watch Gretar Steinsson, the AZ Alkmaar player who is up for sale. I think that would be the likely Rovers target.

However Steinsson did not play because he is about to sign for Bolton for a very hefty £3 million.

Steinsson plays right wing, right back and sometimes midfield. I am not sure what all of the fuss is about myself, but there are not many available players out there.

Just who on earth are your sources?

Shearer does not want it. I stood next to a friend of mine who has known him for 20 years, works and travels with him, as he called him on Friday. Shearer was lying on the beach in Barbados. He catagorically stated that he was going to continue lying on that beach and that there was no way in hell he was going to take the job.

Maybe that is what journo's call expressing an interest, but to me it sounds like an abject refusal to be involved and a categoric statement that he is not interested in the job. He has the cushiest job in the world at the moment - a few hours a week on MOTD and a raft of endorsement deals. He gets to spend time with is young family and generally enjoy life.

Shearer may well have said to someone in Barbados on Friday that he didn't want the job. That was Friday. He, like everyone else who knew what was going on, heard that Redknapp was getting the job.

Let's check the timeline.

Sky were called - and I now know who from - to get Shearer's name out as 'being interested in the job.' I believe this was mischief on his part.

However the story has moved on since Redknapp said no. Shearer WOULD take the job but needs Ashley to be press-ganged into it and put under pressure by the fans.

Shearer, as you will know by now, has been known to say one thing and do another.
