A few years back David Sheepshanks stated that a short and inauspicious run in the UEFA cup can mean the club loses money. I don't know if that's still true today.

I think that is all due to change, not sure if it will be for next season or the season after.

The recent announcement that G14 will be dispanding also included a better TV deal for those clubs in the UEFA Cup as well as a change in the way Champions League money was allocated.

Koumas may be too expensive.

Not saying he he is necessarily what we need in football terms but financially, how the hell can Koumas be too expensive having sold Savage and got him and Enckleman off the wage bill?

That means we can't afford to pay a net 1.5m for someone spread over several seasons?

Maybe Nicko didn't mean we couldn't afford him - maybe he meant the price was too expensive.

Maybe Wigan are holding out for nearer £5m and we're not prepared to pay that amount?

I'm clutching at straws - but perhaps the money is available - just not prepared to spend that amount on Koumas.

As usual...you work things out correctly.

The way the club should look at it is simple.

• Currently 8th = Decent place, no European Football

• Finish 6th = £2 million more in place money + Extra TV money + UEFA Cup Football and an extra Lure for players or takeovers in the summer

• Finish 4th = £4 million more in place money + Extra TV money + Champs League Money if pass through qualifiers

I don’t agree with the ‘its not worth it’ rubbish. Yes you don’t make mega money in prize money but for us the potential to win an extra £4.7 million (maximum) + extra gate money + TV money. It could be worth somewhere in the region of £10 million to us!! To us, that is a lot of cash!!!

UEFA CUP Payment breakdown for 06/07 in which we reached the last 32.

For reaching the last 32, we got €380,000 in prize money, excluding the extra gate money, extra TV (which included £700k for the Leverkusen game alone)

Group stages are based on €70,000 per appearance + €40,000 for a win, €20,000 for a draw

Last 16 we would of got another €70,000

Quarter Finals – €300,000

Semi Finals – €600,000

Final Winner – €2,500,000

Final Runner Up – €1,500,000

Runner up = €5,311,500 Espanyol

Winner = €6,251,500 Seville (£4.7 Million)

These amounts go up each season so now it is probably over £5 million to the winner.

Which was based on 4 (I think) away games to that point. Chartering a plane - many £000s x 4. Hotels stays at least one night (mostly two) for probably about 50 people including entourage- many more £000s. I suspect to be honest there wouldn't be a lot of change left over from £220k for the above.

Can we please give the financial woe stuff a rest, by the way.

My head is nipping, I've got one finger to type and a phone at my ear trying to find out what the **** is going on.

Pass the paracetomal.

There is also a grave danger of talking yourself into recession. The fact is there is some cash for a player - probably midfield - and maybe for a striker if Roberts goes.

But you are just depressing yourself otherwise and there is a game to be won that could see you go close to fourth.

But sadly that is no basis for buying anyone on the gamble they would make the difference.

From a money standpoint, Rovers have to assume we would get knocked out of the CL at 3rd Qualifying Round stage and not get into the Group Stage riches.

So we are basically talking about a break-even competition in the UEFA (have you any idea how much it costs to move a Prem club around Europe?) and placement money.

Say we roll over and pay Wigan £5m for Koumas and his wages are £35K a week for four years. That is £12m over four years. Are you guarranteeing Koumas will improve Rovers' finnishing place by 3 places more than it would have been otherwise for 4 seasons running?

I take all your points but don't forget the club let us all in for free (or just ST holders?) because of the KO time and would still have had all the costs of putting on the game. It would be interesting to know how much it costs just to open the stadium up for a game.

There is a difference between being depressed and having some understanding of why the club are very cautious about investing in players, especially in January. One needs to be realistic and look at the longterm costs plus recognise that most January signings are other clubs' cast offs. the quality is available in the summer - Anelka etc an exception to prove the rule but we just couldn't justify £15m plus £60k a week anyway.

Only thing depressing me is the thought of getting soaked on the way to Ewood tomorrow!!

Nicko,

I see the Dingles have agreed a £1.5m with Charlton for the sale of Andy Gray. Can we assume this is to free up funds for Riordan? How likely are they to get him? I've always though Riordan was a good young player, but if he ends up having played for Septic and Burnley before the age of 25 I may have to wish serious injury upon him in a Jan stylee.

Gray will probably go, but it will be closer to £2 million.

There will be a replacement early next week - and possibly Riordan as well.

That will leave change of around £500,000 for a midfielder or possibly a left winger.

There is another biggie on the boil but it is proving hard to pull off.

id be disappointed if roberts doesnt start..

middlesbrough is a game we should win..

i know we have had our disappointments this season, but if we win tomorrow we can right up there-that would be a brilliant achievement-considering how much we have had to spend...

Let's put those results in context:

He took charge of a good Valencia side. They had recently been in two champions league finals, won the Spanish super-cup and Barcelona and Real Madrid were far from supreme at the time. In the two seasons that he won it, it was not a Barcelona and Real Madrid double for 2nd and 3rd. That isn't taking anything away from it, but plenty of mediocre managers win things with good teams.

He then took charge of Liverpool, a side that contained several very good players, and whilst it was some ways behind the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea, was still an already established member of the "big 4"; meaning that Champions League participation is taken as a virtual certainty, not an achievement (which makes the fact that they have finished 5th during his reign a serious blot on his copybook).

He's an ok manager, he's managed good sides with a fair amount of financial backing and has always started with decent squads. Now I'm not saying he's horrible, but I judge a manager and team by their league performances, Liverpool under Benitez have been far from spectacular. To make matters worst, he doesn't even lose playing attractive football.

Rafa's been to 2 European cup finals in 3 Years, Fergies been in 1 in around 20 years, does that make Rafa a better manager??

Eddie, IF Rovers won a cup competetion on penalties would you really care?

Success at the end of the day.

They've won the same amount of European Cup finals - and it doesn't make Benitez a better manager.

If you look at how much money Rafa has spent - and how far they are behind Chelsea, Arsenal and United - it's a poor showing.

How Hughes has got his team even close to Rafa's - considering what both managers inherited and spent - is nothing short of a miracle. It also shows that Hughes is an exceptionally talented young manager - and Rafa is average at best.
