thenodrog Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 Fair comment Gordon but would Beattie bring anything worthwhile to the party if Roberts is staying at Ewood? Can't see it myself. 'If' being the operative word then? Anyway don't forget that (4th choice?) Nonda (and Jeffers) won't be returning so Beattie could easily replace him in the squad. 3 gifted / pacy strikers and two 'target men' sounds like it would offer enough options to me. Oh and rem to move Gally on.... he's not enough Prem quality imo.

I wasn't implying that Roberts is necessarily going to leave Gordon, I meant if he doesn't, wont the pecking order be: McCarthy Roberts Derbyshire Rigters Beattie ?? If Roberts were to leave I think it's an inferior swap, and we should be setting our sights higher. If Roberts doesn't leave I can't see for 2.5m we're gaining anything particularly worthwhile with Beattie either. I think what I'm trying to say is that if we are actually intending spending any money this close season (fat chance!) it should be saved for the notional superstar who would improve the first choice starting eleven. Not on a 5th choice striker.
Scotty Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 Imo a fit and firing Beattie is a class above Roberts (and I like Roberts). He's a much better finisher and a much better target man. If Beattie still has the desire then we could do a lot worse for the money we seem to be talking about. Plus the romantic in me quite likes the idea of having another local lad in the team. I find it hard to believe that we'll buy Beattie and not sell one of our existing strikers though (not including Jeffers or Nonda who both seem to be on the way / gone already).
doctorryan Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 Someone on the official forum says the trialist is from Paris Saint Germain. If only it was Jerome Rothen.
nicko Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 What you say there about the financial situation is completely contradictory three times over! Just to clarify. 1 The current regime are usually cautious with their spending, but splash out when they have to or the right guy comes along. Their approach this summer is along those lines, so in that way their strategy is not 'affected' by the possible takeover. 2 If Dan Williams and his guys come in - even if they get an agreement in the next couple of weeks - it will be difficult for the deal to be done completely before the end of August. 3 If the deal does go through I don't think we are talking Abramovich-type spending. I don't know the figures exactly, but a takeover would maybe mean about £15-20 million immediately available on new players. This would go up if they pay less for the ownership of the club. PS - The Paris St Germain lad called Chris is a youth team player.

Um, I would take that! We don't need a large amount of world class players, just a top quality striker and maybe a CM and right back. 15m with Sparky's acumen would allow us to easily accomplish that.

Given the way the manager spotted and picked up the likes of Bentley, Samba, Nelsen, Benni, Bellamy etc would mean that we'd have enough loose change out of 15m to rebuild the 'Roversmum Riverside' stand to boot.
bob Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 Has anyone got any decent info on Dan Williams Googled him etc all I can find is he is a Property tycoon with two companies with an overall worth of 3.75 Billion. Sorry if this has already been supplied..

I wish! It would be great to see a new Riverside Stand rise again. No not the old wooden plank seats and draughty wooden slatted rear walls, but a matching stand to complete the image of the new Ewood Park. Same as the JW would be nice, but with reduced prices to allow for the sun being in your eyes most times.
unleaded Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 Nicko is the PSG player signed up or is he here on trial? .......................Any chance of a surname.I know that he is a big strapping lad who plays in midfield and is left footed.

nicko Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 The lad has come in 'under the radar' a bit - nobody knows much about him or who brought him. From what I can see on the PSG website they have two Chrises, Ouelemba and Mavinga. Mavinga is younger and is in the first-team squad but on the fringes. I guess he is one of those two, but hopefully get a definitive answer later. I see a couple of papers are suggesting Everton want £4 million for James Beattie. Sounds a bit heavy to me...and that is not meant as a cheap gag
benhben Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 http://www.thisislancashire.co.uk/sport/fo...e_interview.php Hes well ginger!!

I played against Mavinga back on my old team and I have to say it would surprise me if he had improved so much as to be getting attention from foreign clubs.
Hughesy Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 I do not want the club to sign Beattie at all - i think he wouldnt improve our starting 11 and possible not our 1st 16 players of the squad. And that is what the club should be aiming to do. I think we need a big name signing in order to boost Season tikcet sales further.
mjs Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 I think we need a big name signing in order to boost Season ticket sales further. Who is there available that we could seriously compete for? Given that West Ham are paying silly wages for the likes of Bellamy, and Tottenham paying 16.5m for just above average players like Bent.
Eddie Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 Defoe? Pretty much seems the right man for the job for me.
Rovers_4_life Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 Or Robbie Keane? May be harder to get than Defoe but either would be great signings for me
broadsword Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 How did we suddenly get on to talking about wasters like Defoe and Smith?
gazsimm Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 we are just saying that we would rather have them as our big summer signing and not james beattie
AggyBlue Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 we are just saying that we would rather have them as our big summer signing and not james beattie Who's WE, don't you mean YOU? I wouldn't have either of 'em.
tcj_jones Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 They might be a pair of little @#/?s, but they're certainly miles ahead of Beattie in terms of quality. I'd go as far as to say that Defoe is probably a better player than McCarthy. Defoe would be an immense signing.
philipl Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 Agreed aggy. Not worth the extra £ms transfer fees or the extra £10ms wages per year to re-jig the Rovers pay structure. Incidentally, the owners of the LA Galaxy said they have looked at investing in EPL clubs but won't touch them because of the lack of a salary cap.
