Now we know why we didn't sign Bellamy. Mark Hughes wants another striker to compliment his other strikers. Can't see Bellamy doing that. Complement maybe, but not the other. Sorry, it's end of term and I've got six weeks without needing to use the red pen, and teachers get withdrawal symptons very quickly.

Be careful Gumboots; the PC Police will get you. You are not allowed to correct spelling mistakes as it gives people all kinds of complexes and makes them go out and commit terrible acts of violence and vandalism etc.

A very simple thought-

Hughes in his interview is making it clear that none of his front line strikers are leaving.

If you are a striker contemplating a move to Ewood and you are looking at a line-up which already has:

Benni (CL winner and runner-up Golden Boot last season)

Roberts (pretty effective big man who came back from injury with a golden scoring run)

Derbyshire (youngster broken through scoring goals for Rovers and England u-21s)

Rigters (golden boot winner of the UEFA u-21 competition this summer)

Plus Gallagher who is all talent but not yet got it together plus Joe Garner (thanks Alan) who might do a "Derbyshire"....

Are you going to look at that lot and think "Even if I am the star signing for £10m, am I going to be automatic first choice?"

That is a very different looking Rovers from the one Craig Bellamy left twelve months ago- never mind the money, Bellamy is not facing that sort of competition for places at the WHammers is he?

Quite possibly, Rovers are victims of their own success in attracting a new front line striker this summer.

Yeah that...and they cost too much.

Philipl change to Joe Garner.

Barker is no longer at Rovers, he now plays for Irish club St Patrick’s Athletic

You see plenty of big strikers move to clubs with more competition for places than us, just look at Darren Bent moving to Spurs this summer.

You would love my building, the signage directing people to the "Department of Complimentary Medicine"

Are you quite sure it's the competition they move for? Might just be the money that is the main attraction!

come on guys, lets no be daft. Bellamy or Darren Bent would walk into our first team and they know it. Cruz or Mido might not immediately though, depending on whether they find form.

we have a strong stable of strikers but at present only McCarthy is up there with the best.

Now that figure does make sense.

Galatasaray have had a bad season and can offer the Champions League. So I would make them contenders.

The latest news I have is not too encouraging. I know there is nothing close - either Santa Cruz or the over-priced Beattie - so they are still scouring around.

Interesting to see how McCarthy approaches the game tomorrow. I hope he is not sulking.

Good story in the People tomorrow about Bolton Wanderers.

See if it rings any bells...

Can't agree with that for a second. I haven't seen much of Rigters - he could be a good player - but currently I would rate our strike force behind all of the top four, Spurs, West Ham and Newcastle. I'd say Reading's striek force is close to our standard and Man City's may well be a lot better come August. Even in the current climate, any striker coming to Ewood for £10 million plus would walk right into our team. Bellamy certainly would, and he and Ashton will be a formidable partnership.

Gallagher broke into the first team briefly under Souness but hasn't come close for about three seasons now, while I think Barker has left the club. I like Derbyshire, but I'm still not that confident that he will become more than an average Premiership striker and Rigters is something of an unknown.

I think we really, really need a top quality striker to progress.

I suppose you are right tcj. Most recent form:

Roberts scored 5 in 11 starts last season for Rovers (I think 5 in 8 when he came back from injury)

Derbyshire scored 9 in 14 starts for Rovers

Rigters scored 4 in 5 for Holland u-21s in the UEFA Championships

Of course any new striker signing is going to face no competition whatsoever and can expect to keep his place regardless.

Does the hyper-expensive Spurs strike force match that goal scoring record?

The point I am making is not that we don't need another front line striker- we do.

But compared with when we were signing Benni and Roberts last season who basically knew they only had to be able to tie their bootlaces to be sure of a game, any striker joining Rovers now knows that first team football every week is a long way from being guarranteed. If they lose their place through injury, suspension or loss of form, there are at least 3 players at Ewood who have the current form to come in, score goals and keep scoring goals.

For Bellamy, the competition was Ashton after a long lay off and Zamora for two places at West Ham.... or Benni, Jason, Matt and Maceo at Rovers. It was probably not just the money that affected his thinking and the same goes for any other striker contemplating life at Ewood.

This is why I would be very happy to see Beattie come to the club if he has the hunger to rebuild his career. He brings aerial power and physical strength which gives Rovers a potent mix of different sorts of strikers to chose from. All we are missing is an out-and-out speedster but none of the four we have got at the moment are slouches.

And yes there is Gallagher and Garner who might come good- who predicted the impact Derbyshire would have for Rovers and England u-21s this time last year?

What are we saying here, that he still wants away.
