I think Alan Smith would be a great signing if we could get him for around £6 million. Over-rated? I dont agree, play him in most games and he can make a massive difference. He was vital to United's title drive at the end of last season! Just ask Fergie!

Err like how David May ended up with champions league winners medal! :D

I always love that pic of may jumping to the front when they won it like he had played a big part in it.

If sparky sees a player he is convinced of and we can get him, he will go to JW/ the board and I am absolutely certain up to £10m or perhaps more would be made available.

Two caveats-

1) What strikers are available on the market at around £10m just now? Are you reasonably sure those strikers are good enough to pay off the £10m lay out (roughly equates to being the difference of two and a half places in the EPL in each season over four seasons)? Which strikers at £10m are vastly better than Beattie at £3m ish or Rigters at £350K?

2) The £10m striker doesn't wreck the Rovers' pay structure causing everyone to seek a justifiable rise.

I still don't understand fully why with the current freedom of contract situation (that players 'enjoy' and their agents manipulate for all their worth) we or any other club for that matter pay large transfer fees for any player to their current club.

nicko, any news on other transfers, blackburn and anybody else??

lol - half this thread is people asking this question! Just wait and he'll let you know when there is!

Manchester City going daft at the moment, bidding for all sorts. It's exciting to watch but if they don't sign them they will be well short.

If Rovers are bottom of the table for transfer thrills right now then Sven's mob are probably top.

Their bid for the Mexican is looking good if the player fancies it. The move for Scott Carson is struggling because Liverpool want so much money.

I heard they where trying to buy God to help improve weather during home games.

Zamora is not for sale say the Hammers. But if he starts the season out of the side, you never know.

I would hope you had got somebody better by then. But that's a 'you never know' too.

One bit of news...which will come out later.

Christian Wilhelmsson, a decent Swedish winger, has agreed to sign for Bolton. Not a bad addition. Most of their other new faces look like squad men to me, but this guy is quick and determined. Sammy Lee obviously playing 4-4-2.

I really hope Castillo will turn City down, he looks like a real gem, even at £10m. One player won't be enough anyway though, they will need at least half a team. And they will have to buy at least two Thai Internationals according to Tahsinatra, this is at best a mid table project.

Things are moving on the striker front from what I hear.

By the sound of it Rovers are making their move and pushing for an answer.

I believe there is a major development on Santa Cruz and if that does not happen soon then there will be an offer for Beattie.

Basically they want Santa Cruz to come as soon as possible or they go elsewhere.

More details when I nail them, but it sounds like the manager wants his new striker in sooner rather than later and will be spending the cash.

so roque santa cruz is our number 1 target???

would we be willing to pay the 4million everton want for beattie if santa cruz move fails????

id prefer beattie to him...

I think I can safely say that Santa Cruz is the number one target. But it is a smart move to ask for an answer rather than be 'used' as his agents offer him elsewhere.

From what I am told Rovers want an answer now or in the next couple of days. Again, shrewd thinking.

Beattie is the next option, but even then the price will have to be lower than the £4 million Everton want. That is rich for someone who has stopped scoring.

I know there are flaws in both players but you would hope that the club could get something extra from them.

The good news is that Rovers are not sitting on their hands. It may seem to have taken a long time, but Santa Cruz was at the Cope America and then took a few days to recover and chew over his future.

From what I can make out the Rovers bid is acceptable and the terms are pretty good. So if he fancies it then the move should happen.

If not, then Beattie goes top of the list. There are rumours Everton have had other interest, but I can't see it. Middlesbrough sources say they are not in and the only other possible is Spurs. They liked him before and could try again after the Mido pools win.

Now if Mido is worth £6 million - which is now being paid in FULL by Birmingham - then Santa Cruz and Beattie are both worth a punt.

With 3 weeks til the season starts :D I'm sure Hughes will want to get any business sorted before then and it might speed things up a bit too. Will definitely be an interesting few weeks.

when santa cruz a couple of days ago said that he was in negotiation with a club and wanted to be sorted out this week, which club is he on about. and how mcuh do you think rovers are going to bid for santa cruz nicko. :rover:

i should maybe read some of the earlier pages of this thread to find out the answer to my question but, well........nicko.....what position do you hold within for football or rovers for that matter for everyone to be sending there questions your way like little kids do their wishes to father christmas???

If Sparky has a genuine interest in him, scouts would have been sent to watch and homework done on a player. If he does come to Rovers, I'd urge people not to take him on his previous record but to see him play in Blue and White.
