Depends on what team your talking about. Personally I'd like to have the club players. I wouldn't pick either of the players that play in England shirts. I'd put Gerrard slightly ahead for the fact that he scores more important goals!

Lampard was shocking at WC2006. Gerrard wasn't much better. They are a bit better now but the pressure is not on them yet. They are great for their clubs. Gerrard is more dynamic so I'd give him the nod. You'd never see Lampard playing right back like Gerrard has done (as Essien did now and again too).

Ferdinand is a good organiser, strong, and can play a ball. His 1 on 1 defending is suspect though, hence he looks better with better players around as he has to do very little of it.

I think England's world class player at the mo is Ashley Cole. He's a right tw@t but a very good defender.

Gerrard is a much better player than Lampard.

Do you think? Is it not just because he stands out more in the liverpool side?

Gerrard couldnt of done that bit of skill that Lamps managed to set up Anelka against Villa last week. Lamps is also alot less injury prone.

Ferdinand ahead of Lucio, Cannavaro, Nesta or Puyol, your having a laugh

Gerrard or Lampard ahead of Iniesta, Xavi, Kaka, Pirlo, Essien, Frings, Ballack, Gatusso, Juninho or Ronaldinho, your having a laugh

They only one that would even get a look in is Rooney, and even then he needs to get past Villa, Torres, Eto, Benzema and Messi. And I would still personally rather Henry.

For those also lauding the efforts of Gerrard and Lampard, they are allowed to do what they do because they have, in Gerrard's case, Mascherano and Alonso, and Lampard, has, previously Makelele now Essien. Lampard has been no where near as dominmant this year with those two missing and covering his defensive frailties.

The "laugh" is that Ferdinand is the backbone of the Man Utd defence which has conceded how many goals in the last 2-5 years, how many trophies have they won in that time?

Cannavaro, Nesta and Puyol are top players but Ferdinand is every bit as good if not better.

Seriously it is a joke that Frings and Juninho are on that list but which of the above are complete midfield players, i.e. can attack and defend, the only ONE is Essien who I think is an awesome player- but has not scored the goals that Lamps and Gerrard have scored.

All the players you mention have other players supporting them, Gattuso is the prime example without whom Pirlo and Kaka cannot function.

I am baffled with how "potential" players like Benzema are being compared to Rooney, how does Walcott not get a look in as he is a superior player to Benzema.

Nemanja Vidić. Every United fan i know reckon he is more vital to the team than Ferdinand.

England's best defender if everyone is fully fit and in form isn't Ferdinand, Terry or Carragher, its Woodgate.

Thats on the basis of what exactly?

Woodgates EIGHT caps for England? His performances in the Champions league (oops he has not played there consistantly), or his heroics for a top club? (umm he has played for Real NINE times and he was sent off a number of times).

When on form Bramble is the best English defender, shame his form is about one game in 50.

With regards to Vidic, it is a proven fact that partnerships are imperative at centre half and Ferdinand compliments Vidic brilliantly, it is easy to forget but Ferdinand is the most expensive defender in the world. Vidic is brute strength whereas Ferdinand is a graceful player who is an excellent passer of the ball.

I don't rate Woodgate. Too lightweight.

Lampard is very, very consistent with goals and assists whereas Gerrard is slightly less so but has the ability to produce a piece of brilliance that will turn a game on it's head.

It just depends which you prefer really.

I'd prefer either of em to do it at international level but the fact is they don't in spite of being selected time after time for years. The step up seems a little too much for both. I do suspect that they are one anothers worst enemy and that they might indeed be worth a place on their own but definitely never in the team together.

To consider either 'worlds best' is lunacy. We are simply brainwashed by seeing em week in week out lauded to high heaven by TV pundits for playing well for their respective clubs.

From what i've seen Woodgate is the most naturally talented centre back we have. He has pace, power, strength, positionally he is solid, good in the air and on the deck, decent passer and he can run with the ball. Its just a tragedy that his only achilles heel is his fitness, as he would have won plenty of caps for England. When he is fully fit, Terry and Ferdinand don't come close IMO.

Good point on the need for a decent partnership at the back, but I still think Vidic is the better defender. He doesn’t make many mistakes and his all round game is incredibly solid. With the likes of Brown and Evans, United seem to be able to cope when Ferdinand misses a game, but when Vidic is out I’ve seen them often drop points or look shaky at the back.

Same here. I know at least 20 mancs, 12 of which are ST holders and all have that opinion. Whilst we are on their opinions, the majority of them are not keen on Nani.

2-0 everton now.

Did anyone here the commentator on sky? Alan Parry I think it was, was a pleb, mentioned that Everton play rovers on wednesday and we aren't a team you'd want to play as we are fighting for survival in a different way to West Brom? Yeah Alan cause all we are is a dirty team trying to kick our way to safety, form your own opinions instead of the opinions if the London press 3 years ago.

Muppet.

Didn't hear him TCO but I suppose he couldn't have meant that we are a more established premier league team and have more to lose?

Fantastic result for us with West Brom losing, now all we need is Boro to lose to Liverpool and then we can worry about Hull City tomorrow with the knowledge that those below us are just that, with the added bonus that we have two games in hand.
