Doesn't change the teams they have to play next though. What a time for him to decide to go in there. Real last throw of the dice although I suppose they have nothing to lose and nor has he. Nobody can blame him if they go down as they are as good as gone already if they carry on without doing something different.

If true then it could have a huge impact on our survival chances.

Looking at their fixture run in and their current form I think most neutral fans would believe they are a dead cert to go down, but a managerial change can transform a club and its fortunes…

I wonder what the odds are on Shearer keeping up the club he has supported all his life at the expense of the club that he had his most success at/best performances…

This could end up giving a Newcastle a real boost and must notably thier fanbase which will no doubt reckon he's their savoiur from tha tpoint of view it's not that good for us really. On the bright side at least we won't have to sit through is mind-numbing punditary on MOTD anymore.

It would make it all the sweeter if shearer was in charge when they get relegated!

Like it was said before, it doesn't change the teams they have to play or get the injured players like duff, bassong and taylor fit.

Wasn't there a media circus when the last 'messiah' took charge and he really didn't do anything.

Shearer is untested as a manager at any level and we all know what a manager without any experience of the top flight can do!

He'll only be a help to their cause if he's fit enough to play!

The post above must be a record for the number of spelling and grammatical errors in two small sentences!!

I THINK what you meant was

Thanks teacher!

The majority of the mistakes in the highlighted sentence were clearly just typing errors however I shall pay closer attention before posting in future to eradicate such errors. Maybe I should also invest in a new keyboard with a more comfortable and practical layout than the one I currently own. In addition I shall stop trying to be clever by typing one-handed whilst consuming a piece of toast.

That last bit just made me hungry, I think I'll make some toast myself.

The one problem with shearer IMO, is if the results of the first couple of games don't go newcastles way, the fans will turn on the players because they won't be blaming the new 'messiah'.

Seems a last throw of the dice by Ashley, it seems more a publicity stunt to appease the fans rather than a football decision, if your going to try to fight your way out of a relagation battle you would go with a proven manager such as Venables rather than a guy who has no managerial experience and sits on a sofa every weekend with Alan Hansen.

The danger is, for us, is that that Shearer could relegate the team that gave him a premiership medal.

No he can't. our own players are the only ones who can relegate us by not getting enough points on the board. Don't balme Shearer if we go down and Newcastle stay up. There have been enough chances already for us to be out of trouble. WE just have to take them.

I agree, We cant blame Shearer because Jason Roberts has the same finishing ability as Stephen Hawkins.

Brilliant. I had visions of a Special Olympics-style wheelchair swivel and shot at Craven Cottage which is Jason's saving grace so far this season.

As for our visiting Hammer, how naive can you get.

West Ham got done for lying to the Premier League and breaking the rules and were off the page in good luck in unbelievably lenient treatment.

Within three days, West Ham were lying to the Premier League and breaking the rules again!

And you think that is a minor matter?

Moving up to Geordie land- seems that the story isn't an April Fool but that Alan Shearer might be. Taking the job before playing Chelsea at home is a huge risk as that sort of challenge is what Hiddink thrives on. The honeymoon could be over by half time if the Dutch master is able to focus on the task.

I actually think he's been quite canny with the timing. He's got 8 games to save them, and if he does he'll be an even bigger local hero than he is now and will enhance his wider reputation, whether he then stays on for the longer term or (as I suspect) he doesn't.

If they finish up in the relegation zone, well that's where they were when Shearer rocked up, so it's hardly his fault - reputation still intact.

Starting with Chelsea, a game which of course nobody expects Newcastle to get anything from. So again it's win-win for Shearer in the very short term ... this poor Newcastle team had perhaps a 1 in 10 chance of beating Chelsea before his appointment, maybe it's now 2 in 10. Either way if they pull off a shock, Shearer will get the credit, if they don't - again, he won't take the blame.

Several clubs have revealed new shirts today - such as York's one-off purple shirt to be worn at the FA Trophy final, Lewes's one-off green and black shirt to mark the announcement of the South Downs as a National Park, and Wigan's switch to red and white halves next season to reflect a kit worn in 1932. (Various)

Another team trying to take to a halved kit. We really should be looking to make this part of identity and have halved shirts both home and away.

Even so it would have been better yesterday or even tomorrow. If they fail he'll be tagged with April Fool stuff forever. The only hope he has is to reinvigorate the fans desire which might just transfer itself to the players. Lets hope not!

btw next up for the mags is Chelsea.

Erm, does somebody else want to tell him, or should I?

No I dont mean they are taking 'ours', I was just pointing out how another team is going down the halved kit idea.

Fulham practically copied our kit this season with the red & black halved kit. Its time we set our 2 kits to 2 identified sets of colours and make it our identity.

1) No, I mean they probably aren't going down that route at all. It's April 1st.

2) I completely agree on this. The red and black halved away kit is brilliant and easily my favourite away kit we've ever had.
