I don't think it matters what Villas goal difference is. We just need to win our games and hope they fail to pick up maximum points. We just need to focus on our own performances as we've got some tough games ahead of us.

I really don't see how we'll catch them unless we can take something from our next two games. After those, Derby aside, we have two games in which we could quite easily lose where as Villa still have two extremely winnable home games to come. I think we must realistically say goodbye to Europe for this year.

Then again, football being football, we'll probably lose to Derby but win the rest of our games and pip Villa to 7th.

I am surprised no-one has picked up on Portsmouths latest accounts news.

Posting a loss of £23million ! Not only that, according to fans in the know, they owe subtantial transfer fees for most of their signings with agreements to settle them next year (I dont know just how true this is but would imagine they would owe part of each transfer fee like most clubs). They have a very minimnal turnover with a crowd average of 19000 !

I just cannot see how they can survive next year. Granted an FA Cup Final win gives them approx £3m and 6th spot will give them a decent prize pot BUT it wont pay their bills !

I cannot see them spending big money in the close season UNLESS they have a serious sugar daddy.

Some interesting thoughts from the Pompy fans

Don't a lot of clubs report losses these days?

They'll easily survive next season, the teams coming up from the Championship look awful, and 3 or 4 of the teams who will stay up this season are pretty bad too.

Hi all,

I think after today's results I think realistically Europe has gone and the fact villa have boosted their goal difference by 6 goals means it will be practically impossible to get an intertoto spot it could be very different if we win tommorrow but I think defeat and Europe has gone for this year but I think the main reason for our downfall has been the trust not investing in the clubwith say the reported 10m in the jan transfer window we might have well be competing for champs lge footy and at least have the uefa cup to fall back on I think all it would have taken would have been either a Sidwell/Diarra type player and we would be up there and maybe another defender anyway am still going to watch the rovers game with fellow board supporters in Snaresbrook lets hope we will be celebrating a win and if anyone higher up views these boards come on the trustees let's have some proper investment in the club come the summer and thereafter until the club is finally sold

Laters all.

I think I disagree with the last post.

Its Rovers inconsistency that has cost us a couple of league places and a shot at UEFA football next season (if we fail to qualify for the Intertoto).

I posted a few weeks ago the points we should have had in the bank.

Its nothing to do with a lack of investment as we clearly have a squad that can compete with the big boys.

If Rovers do not have european football next season then we can expect an all out assault on the cups and a big push for a top 5 spot.

Do not despair, we have had a good season with a few blips that have cost us.

Fear not, we could be in the position of Bolton, Fulham or Derby, BUT we are not :brfcsmilie:

when savage's sold, rovers obviously need a replacement who can tackle, close down, break up play and still able to distribute the ball properly. unfortunately, it comes at a time when the targets are out of rovers financial reach. so the management conveniently said that there were no worthy target available in the january window. this has cost us a european place, imo.

We have a squad that can compete, I agree with this much. But even if you compare our squad with someone like Spurs', I'd have to say theirs is a fair bit better. Same with Everton, Villa, they just seem to have that bit more genuine quality in their sides. So yes we can compete as we have done this season but this inconsistency is down to not having quite enough quality in the squad, not enough players to make something happen, which in turn is down to us having less resources etc so the way I see it, it's hard to apportion the blame to anyone.

So yeah like you said in the last sentence we should be glad even if we do only finish 9th in the circumstances. And maybe if Hughes does get this 10 mill to spend we could buy a couple of players of real quality.

How bad was Mike Riley at giving City a penalty yesterday-the lad just fell over!

Time for another job Mike. Had nearly as bad a day as Roy Carroll. Derby sucked in 6 at home with Savage, Todd and Jay McEvilly playing for them. Looks like Hughes knows when to get shot really.

In reply to 1864 re: Portmouth finances,

Next season a season ticket at Pompey for an adult will cost you from between £600(cheapest) to the dearest at £925.

Thats the band in which all fans will have to pay to watch Pompey from next season, what i'm told is the fans are also happy with these prices. This should go some way to bridging the finances.

The north south financial divide gap eh !

Chelsea v Man Utd, 12:45

Either Man U and Chelsea could do a Premiership and Champs League double, or join Arsenal in a trophyless season.

Unless Chelsea beat Utd by an extraordinary margin United's goal difference will be enough to see them through. Obviously I hope we win on Saturday but realistically Utd's last three fixtures against Rovers, WHU and Wigan should give them the 9 points they need to secure the title on 89 points, a total Chelsea can equal but not better.

You obviously have a (very large) soft spot for Arsenal, but did you ever consider that they just aren't good enough? They regularly have Senderos playing for them, I wouldn't be happy if he were playing for us.

United and Chelsea just have better squads and United have been the best side in the league this season. They deserve the title.
