tony gale's mic Posted April 20, 2008 Posted April 20, 2008 If Brum take points of Villa today then the run in to Europe could be quite interesting, depending on how we do vs Portsmouth next week.

RibbleValleyRover Posted April 20, 2008 Posted April 20, 2008 Hoping that Villa slip up today, either a draw or even better a loss. Just noticed there is another fixture in which we could do with a positive result going our way Man City v Portsmouth later today as well. A draw would be excellent.
philipl Posted April 20, 2008 Posted April 20, 2008 Over and out for our European chances, Villa 2-0 up at half time. With a trip to Goodison next week as well, Villa could well get 5th and a direct UEFA entry- Everton have applied for Intertoto by the way. Shame as the change in rules for 2009 makes it far more difficult for clubs like Rovers to get into European competition or give us any incentive to gearing up to challenge for it.

Nate Posted April 20, 2008 Posted April 20, 2008 Villa beating Big Club 4-0. Villa fans singing "Cheerio" and their fans leaving in droves. Love it
brfcshabba Posted April 20, 2008 Posted April 20, 2008 It would be nice to send Big Club down on the last game though
modes98 Posted April 20, 2008 Posted April 20, 2008 Villa beating Big Club 4-0. Villa fans singing "Cheerio" and their fans leaving in droves. Love it Of course from a rovers perspective we want Brum to win. 4-1
Nate Posted April 20, 2008 Posted April 20, 2008 It would be nice to send Big Club down on the last game though That is what I was thinking. Even more so than Notlob.
Nate Posted April 20, 2008 Posted April 20, 2008 is it not now 5-1 ? Or am I hearing things Sure is. Final score.
Eddie Posted April 20, 2008 Posted April 20, 2008 Well our season looks like it's fast on the road to have fallen apart, we managed to miss out on taking advantage of other teams failing and now we'll probably end up finish 9th; that has to be a failure given the squad that we have, especially considering that we crashed out of every cup competition.

Your a miserable bgugger eddie! You haven't had a good word to say about this match from the off. You're a ringer for Marvin the paranoid android.
Neil Weaver Posted April 20, 2008 Posted April 20, 2008 Eddie et al, get a bleedin grip. This might be seen as a bit of propoganda by some, personally I'd say there's a lot of truth in it - the view from planet Earth
Eddie Posted April 20, 2008 Posted April 20, 2008 Not what he says at the beginning of a season though was it? What bothers me is that plenty on here have allowed there expectations for the season to be lowered by our short-comings. At the start of the season many were talking about us having "our best ever squad", how we could challenge for the top 4 and how great things were to come. Now, after being dumped out of every cup by weaker opposition (yes, Arsenal's young-guns count as that) and with us missing out on Europe and finishing lower than the majority on here would have hoped for, we start to fall back on the "well isn't it great to see us spending so little and achieving so much". We over-achieve in terms of the amount we spend, without a doubt, but this season we have underachieved when you look at the actual group of players we send out onto a pitch and that is what counts. We haven't faired anywhere near well enough against the sides around us and we've also dropped points against vastly inferior sides at crucial points throughout the season. I won't argue with anyone who says we have put together an amazing squad given the amount of money we have spent over the past 6/7 seasons; however, now that squad has been assembled, I expect better things of them. Money, for this season, can't really be an excuse for me.
neekoy Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 I expected us to finish at least 6th, mainly because I thought we would have a one of the best defences in the league and Benni would have potted his fair share. Neither has been true. I don't entirely agree with you Eddie but I see what you are saying, I would have expected us to beat the teams we should and compete (as we have done in the past) against the big four and other mid table clubs. When I have a look at the clubs above us Portsmouth, Villa and Man City, I don't see anything special other then what we have lacked which is consistency.

Money, for this season, can't really be an excuse for me. I think we should all realise that one player would have made the difference to our season. A deep central midfielder of real quality would not only have protected the defence but got the absolute best out of the players beside and in front of him. Unfortunately it's the one big piece in the jigsaw that Hughes has not been able to find within his budget. Removed
Eddie Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 My problem with that is that I have been saying we've needed more and better central midfielders for about 2 1/2 seasons now. Now I'm not trying to sound like "I told you so", but I'm not going to have a long-term problem like that be used as an excuse. I can't simply believe that we wouldn't have been able to find a suitable candidate (or at least one that looked like he was) for the position during that period, even within our limited budget.
USABlue Posted April 24, 2008 Author Posted April 24, 2008 Eddie, names escape me, can you offer up a few that would have done the job AND within our budget?
Eddie Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 Several players have moved who would have fit the bill. I could drop probably 20 names of players who have either moved in that time period for a reasonable price or who would probably have been available, but it's a bit pointless to do so.

That's a cop out, eddie. Go on name the 20.
AggyBlue Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 That's a cop out, eddie. Go on name the 20. We're still waiting eddie :!:
philipl Posted April 26, 2008 Posted April 26, 2008 Whilst we are waiting for eddie's list, Spurs have sneaked in and grabbed Modric from under KK's Newcastle nose paying e20m for the Croat according to the Sun. Having Dennis Wise as your international wheeler-dealer looks a great move by Mike Ashley and his boys. I think we could have some fun this summer with a long list of players they nearly sign but don't. I guess that increases the likelihood of Huddlestone leaving WHL. Incidentally, the Guardian calls Huddlestone "England's Jan Molby" this morning.
Hughesy Posted April 26, 2008 Posted April 26, 2008 Confirmed on BBC - they are paying £15.8m for him! That is some money for a midfielder.
