Grabbi Graeme Posted May 4, 2008 Posted May 4, 2008 Everton beaten at Arsenal so Everton still need a point from the final game to secure 5th spot, meaning Villa could still take 5th spot on the final day.

brfcshabba Posted May 4, 2008 Posted May 4, 2008 Yea, but West Ham will want to finish in the top half and I can see them putting in a performance on the last day. Reminiscent of 1995
RibbleValleyRover Posted May 4, 2008 Posted May 4, 2008 Everton beaten at Arsenal so Everton still need a point from the final game to secure 5th spot, meaning Villa could still take 5th spot on the final day. Which could be bad for us as we cannot overtake Everton.
Grabbi Graeme Posted May 4, 2008 Posted May 4, 2008 Thats the problem if Everton had got the 5th place then Villa would have just been playing for the Inter toto, now they know they have a chance of automatic entry into Uefa cup depending on Evertons last result against Newcastle
LeChuck Posted May 4, 2008 Posted May 4, 2008 Which could be bad for us as we cannot overtake Everton. It doesn't make any difference to us, does it? The only way Aston Villa can overtake Everton is by winning against West Ham, but if they do that we're screwed anyway, regardless of whether Villa get in to 5th. I'm not sure how today's game had relevance to us.
philipl Posted May 4, 2008 Posted May 4, 2008 Yes it does- had Everton hung on at 0-0, they would be 5th for certain. As it is with both teams having a GD of +20, a win for Villa and a defeat for Everton means a straight UEFA place for Villa next week through finishing 5th. And LONGER HOLIDAYS and that will motivate them for sure to try to avoid the Intertoto.
LeChuck Posted May 4, 2008 Posted May 4, 2008 Our situation remains the same; win our game and hope Villa don't win theirs. Villa are a determined side by nature anyway, I think it's a little absurd to suggest our job has been made harder by Villa having an outside chance of nicking 5th because 6th would mean just as much to them. And anyway, if we really must take motivation in to consideration, then surely you have to argue that Everton will breeze past a Newcastle side that have nothing to play for, therefore making it impossible for Villa to overtake them.
philipl Posted May 4, 2008 Posted May 4, 2008 Sorry, I would have preferred Villa not to have a UEFA place carrot next week. Equally, it would be OK for Liverpool to beat City now making 8th the lowest we could realistically expect to fall to if we produce another non-turning up performance next week.
Tom 1 Posted May 4, 2008 Posted May 4, 2008 Wigan was an off day, a very bad off day at that. It may still be possible but I think most of our fans would agree...we gifted it to Everton with that loss. Players know it's still an outside chance though, am sure we can get those 3pts, we're far better away from home and we normally score plenty of goals away...with West Hams defense all over the place I'm hopeful. You can relegate Birmingham for us with a win, but not sure if I want to risk you guys winning as we always have (Please don't use that word again) up potential.
Plastic Head Posted May 4, 2008 Posted May 4, 2008 Hopefully King Kev will "do" his old mate Fergie by losing 25-0 at home to Chelsea tomorrow.
1864roverite Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 I dont think it is as easy as some folk are suggesting here. Villa have to go and win at Wham where their lot is NOT a happy one. Wham HAVE to perform just to placaste the waring factions of the inner club hierarchy as well as the fans. Villa will not find this game an easy one to approach. I just cannot see Villa getting 3 points especially after such a dismal home performance against Wigan. Everton on paper should be able to beat Newcastle however, NUFC have shown they can score goals away from home in recent games. Rovers simply have to nothing to lose in reality. Brum HAVE to win at all costs and even that may not be enough if other results go against them. Brum have to come forwards and will be wide open at the back. They will play 4-4-2 whilst Rovers have the ammunition to break at will as well as score goals.
philipl Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 Nervous about saying this but 1864 has it absolutely right. If Rovers do the job at Brum, the odds are slightly in our favour for grabbing 6th place. Newcastle have the money for transfers but cannot spend it! Both Modric and Woodgate opted for lower wages at Spurs.
RibbleValleyRover Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 After reading numerous articles on a number of other forums I hope we beat Villa to the Intertoto spot. I've read some articles that have been very similar to the ones we see coming from Spurs fans. In particular topics that suggest we have no right to get the spot ahead of them due to our stature, our inability to fill our stadium, and the level of physicality our team apparently carries out every time we play. Certainly seeing their fans in a different light than I had previous thought. I really hope we beat them to that spot.
philipl Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 So Wigan and Bolton control the destiny of the Premier League trophy... or provide the incidentals.
bobsterbrfc Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 Dickie Keys at the end there advertised that there will be 3 games on Sky ont he last day, one of either sky sports 1 or 2 must be providing interactive coverage, but what do you reckon the chances are that we might be the interactive game? Would have thought that it might be either our game, or Fulham vs Pompey...Fingers crossed until they make the decision public this week.
S15 Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 Also hoping it is ours but my instict was they'll show Fulham against Portsmouth. Can't see them showing Reading at Derby so seems a bit random to show the second bottom team.
Grabbi Graeme Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 Interesting coment from Keagan after the match about not being able to bridge the gap to Chelsea by saying he hasn't got the money and will stick with most of the players he has got and maybe add 3 players next season Iam sure the Toon army won't want to hear that.
grizfoot Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 Also hoping it is ours but my instict was they'll show Fulham against Portsmouth. Can't see them showing Reading at Derby so seems a bit random to show the second bottom team. I think our game will be on along with Chelsea's and United's game. Birmingham are at home and they often show the team who's at home and needs to survive on the last day plus that fact that nothing short of win for both sides will make it a more exiciting game.
philipl Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 Interesting interview with David Moyes The benefits of not having a rich owner... As Curbishley finds out having to slash both the squad and the wage bill.
Hughesy Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 There is alot of deadwood in their squad, maybe the likes of Stoke, West Brom and Sunderland will pick some of them up. 80k per week for Freddie is pathetic!
CAPT KAYOS Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 Dickie Keys at the end there advertised that there will be 3 games on Sky ont he last day, one of either sky sports 1 or 2 must be providing interactive coverage, but what do you reckon the chances are that we might be the interactive game? I'm sure that I have seen somehwere that ours will be one of the games now being shown yep as rovers rob posted in the Brum thread SKY FINAL DAY LINE UP
1864roverite Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 Rovers fans in away end at Brum beware. Not only will you get arrested there will also be football banning orders applied for ! away fans are not to be toerated in home areas for what could be a volatile atmosphere should Brum face the drop !!! You have been warned
