City have bid £6m for Benayoun. I've always liked him, and I think he'd be a good replacement for Bentley. £6m is more than I'd like to pay, but if it's a choice between £6m for Pennant or for Benayoun, I'd want Yossi.

Manchester City owner Thaksin Shinawatra's struggle to clear his name and recover £800m took another turn for the worse yesterday when a court in Bangkok accepted charges in a third criminal case against the former Thai Prime Minister.

Thaksin and dozens of government workers and ministers are accused of abuse of power in a state lottery that lost around £500m from 2003. The telecoms billionaire must now await a court hearing in September which will decree whether he and 46 others involved in alleged tax exemption and misspending irregularities must repay the money.

Thaksin get;s deeper in the Chitey by the day.

Trail No 3. September. New case against Thaksin

Can city really take the chance, on spending anything at all.

The Supreme Court's section for political office holders on Wednesday agreed to open a new case against ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra on charges of abuse of power in pushing a state loan to Burma to help his family's telecoms empire.

The court set September 16 as the first day of the trial which will examine whether Thaksin abused his position as prime minister when he ordered the state-owned EXIM Bank to extend a loan of 1 billion baht (30 million dollars) to Burma's military regime in 2004 to develop its telecommunications infrastructure to the benefit of Shin Corp, then owned by the Shinawatra family.

Liverpool have drawn a line under the summer's longest-running transfer saga after finalising a £19m deal for Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry.

Fresh from concluding a £20million deal for Spurs striker Robbie Keane, the Anfield club have held further talks with Villa and The Insider understands that they have reached agreement on a £17.5m cash offer plus defender Steve Finnan.

The move is no surprise but the timing is, as Liverpool have still to sell to raise the relevant funds but know they have offers on the table for Jermaine Pennant and Yossi Benayoun.

Further interest has also been expressed in Andriy Voronin, Alvaro Arbeloa and Xabi Alonso.

Benitez made public his first bid for Aston Villa midfielder Barry in May and incurred the wrath of Villa boss Martin O'Neill.

Finally on his way: Gareth Barry

Makeweight: full-back Steve Finnan

Barry then confirmed he wanted to leave and criticised O'Neill for a lack of communication.

That outburst saw the England playmaker fined and banned by the club.

Four bids from the Reds were rejected by the midlands club, who were holding out for £18m, before Arsenal reportedly became involved in the race for the England man.

The 27-year-old, who scored 36 goals in 327 appearances for Villa, was booed when he turned out for Villa in a pre-season game but the crowd appeared fully behind him when he came on as substitute in the Intertoto Cup match against Odense last Saturday.

As a Villa fan, i'm happy. Finnan is a good right back & we don't have one. £17.5 million is alot of money for him when he was leaving for £4 million two years ago. Bring in De La Red to replace him. :)

Everton Chief Exec Resigns

Could this have any effect on Everton and their Summer spending?

A horrible man who didn't understand the club at all - thought they'd sacked him.

But Barry isn't feigning injury - he's just passed his medical today....

Not feigning injury no, but Barry was slagging Martin O'Neill off terribly in his pursuit of a move. O'Neill does realise that he must keep his better players.

I know, let's leave it there. :)

Villa never wanted to sell Barry. He wanted to leave.

Now on monday it was discussed between Barry, Martin Oneill, the agent and Randy Lerner that they should give it a time line and if liverpool didnt do the deal within that time Barry would stay at Villa.

Villa dont need to the money, they need quality.

It is true Barry spoke to the papers but even so that was nowhere near as bad as Bentley telling Sky Sports he wanted out. A blast from nowhere, a come-and-get-me and the worst timing possible as we did not even have a manager at the time.

We should also remember that Barry has been with the club for over 11 years now unlike Bentley´s 2 full seaons. It also seems they have come to an agreement by which he will stay and knuckle down if the transfer did not happen by a certain date. Bentley meanwhile has had a very conveniently timed "injury¨which seems to have strangely cleared up in time for his medical with no more to be said about it. Let us also remember that Barry is looking for Champions League football at a proven top-club whereas Bentley is seemingly going to a club that will offer Uefa Cup football...exactly what Rovers have had the last few years.

The two cases have been compared to each other but any objective view of them will show Barry´s actions in a better light than those of Bentley. I do not blame the lad for wanting to leave, better himself or go back to London but, as is becoming the norm for him after being forced out of Highbury and the U21s fiasco, it has all been shoddily handled.

Still...once it is all wrapped up I will wish Bentley well. Did very well for us and even with a sell-on clause we will be making a very healthy profit from him.
