2008-09 is turning into the poorest season in PL history.

No teams have been consistent. The new teams have all picked up good points.

Todays game between 2 top 4 contenders was of a woeful standard.

I say pay them all a grand a week and they can like it or lump it.

Andrews looked as good as most average MF players yesterday.

Three quarters of the Liverpool side taday had loads of technical flaws in their game and they cost a fortune.

It's just turning into a con.

Seriously? There have been goals galore, really exciting matches (unless Liverpool are involved) and we seem to have a situation where most teams are capable of beating each other. I think the theory of having four or so tiers could smashed apart this year because teams like Fulham and Wigan have improved immensely, whilst big spenders like Spurs seem to be having difficulty. The promoted sides have already shown there won't be a repeat of Derby last year either.

I think it's shaping up to be one of the most exciting seasons for a long time.

One thing has been highlighted and that is how many teams are more than usually reliant on one player and only adjust to them not being there slowly. Man U with Ronaldo, Chelsea with Drogba, Liverpool with Torres and us with Roque. Without these players, the teams look much less potent and struggle to break down other teams. Makes you wonder how Spurs will do once they lose Berbatov and who they replace him with...

Err, I just saw Mike Ashley downing a pint in one go in the stands at the Emirates on MOTD.

I thought that was illegal?

I thought the same. No doubt he'll claim that it was Irn Bru or similar.

BUT

Against Grimsby I noticed a couple of blokes coming back to their seats after HT with a couple of bottles of beer in their hands.

I know it isn't Premier League, but have been watching the Barca and Real matches this afternoon.

Amazing that Barca has never won at Numancia, which was extended today when they lost 1-0. #3 for Numancia looked really good, had some great crosses and was pretty comfortable defending.

DeGuzman was (is) really good for Depor against Real.

Two goals for SWP on his debut today, you pay for quality, you get results.

Really surprised and disappointed we haven't moved to replace DB with a decent quality right winger.

Any manager will I feel have his work cut out at Ewood until we get new owners prepared to invest in the team.

I think it will be a bit more even this year. The top 4 will be closer, the chasing pack will have more teams, and based on early season form so will the strugglers.

As for Liverpool-Villa. What a shocking display. Liverpool never attempted to play, and when Torres went off that was it for them. Why spend all that money on Keane then play him as a left winger?

Disagree, Liverpool under both Houllier and Benitez have always been a poor outfit imo. Take Torres and Gerrard out of there and they'd be indistinguishable from a team like Rovers, despite all the money they've spent.

Elsewhere though, Spurs should be good once they settle, ditto Villa, teams like Wigan and Boro seem to be on the upgrade and generally I think there will be far fewer afternoons when the "big 4" merely have to turn up to get three points.

I'm impressed with what Stoke has done to build a survivable squad on a budget. A lot of over the hill players I wouldn't want at Rovers, but you have to wee with the willy you got. Will be especially impressed if they land Pennant (and ###### that we didn't).

If they are spending that to just survive... what the hell are we doing..

Soke:

Ins: Seyi George Olofinjana (Wolves, £3m),

Thomas Sorensen (unattached),

Dave Kitson (Reading, £5.5m),

Abdoulaye Faye (Newcastle, £2.25m),

Amdy Faye (Charlton, undisclosed),

Andrew Davies (Southampton, £1.3m),

Ibrahima Sonko (Reading, £2m).

TOTAL: 14m (and still spending without selling)

That is not exactly a small budget.. like 3/4 of the teams in the EPL they have ourspent us by a large margin... :(

Here are some other fine examples:

West Brom:

Ins: Scott Carson (Liverpool, £3.25m), Marek Cech (FC Porto, £1.4m), Gianni Zuiverloon (Heerenveen, £3.2m), Luke Moore (Aston Villa, £3m), Borja Valero (Real Mallorca £4.7m). Abdoulaye Meite (Bolton, £2m), Jonas Olsson (NEC Nijmegen, £800,000).

Fulham:

Ins: John Pantsil and Bobby Zamora (West Ham, £6.3m), Tony Kallio (Young Boys Bern, undisclosed), Andranik Teymourian (Bolton, free), Zoltan Gera (West Brom, free), David Stockdale (Darlington, undisclosed), Mark Schwarzer (Middlesbrough, free), Fredrik Stoor (Rosenborg, undisclosed), Pascal Zuberbuhler (Neuchatel Xamax, free), Andrew Johnson (Everton, undisclosed but about £10m), Dickson Etuhu (Sunderland, undisclosed).

Bolton:

Ins: Johan Elmander (Toulouse, £10m), Fabrice Muamba (Birmingham, £5m), Mustapha Riga (Levante, undisclosed), Danny Shittu (Watford, undisclosed), Ebi Smolarek (Racing Santander, season-long loan).

Sunderland:

List to long to post.. lol

And these are excluding our closest rivals last year.. Villa (30m plus), Spuds (40m plus), ManC (30m plus).. who have spent so much its obsene...

Thankfully we are not the only ones spending nothing.. although Everton are bidding quite high for a few atm will be interesting to see what they get..

Agree, but if you look at it that we should survive by spending nothing, but Stoke wouldn't, it is an investment they need to make, and if they stay up, will pay off. Many of our fans would be ###### off if we spent money for the quality of players that Stoke paid for.

I do think we should be spending money, but not for the sake of spending it - instead spending on players that will improve the squad. I REALLY hope we splash on a right winger tomorrow (today for you guys).
