Who do you contact at the club to get a player watched?

I played footy yesterday with a load of blokes, and one of them brought along a mates son (11 year old keeper) - He is aware that United are watching him at the moment and believe me he is quality - maybe I can tip Rovers off and they can get to him 1st?

Call the club and choose the option for the youth departement if not the community one they should arrange a scout to go watch him.

Not sure if this has been posted but someone sent me this link yesterday.

Treating young footballers like meat

cn174,

I could not agree more with that article, its high time our clubs and FA held their hands up and pushed things forward. Cheers.

Go to bloody Spain especially Espanyol (best set-up I am yet to see and I've been to some seriously big ones). Last year 15 of 22 got a contract in either the secunda division or La liga, and they have almost 10 home growns in their squad and yes Riera is one of theirs. What I would give to Rovers doing something like this!!!

Something I have been banging on about for a while - all they needed to do was to ask - but then again maybe they have been reading this mb

QUOTE(Sparky Marky @ Jan 24 2008, 17:48 ) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

It has to be because of the way they are raised in football.

No it doesn't its because they are exceptionally good players

Herding them into an academy at thje age of 8/9 etc is no good IMO and dis associates and counts out some young un's as proved by your own words

QUOTE

'I have experience of the Academy system and Blackburn is generally regarded as a 1st class set-up albeit hard to get into if you're kid is small'

- so if you are small you will generally be predjudiced against- good that don't you think

its the grassroots of football (your parks and playing fields etc and getting the players back interested) that needs looking at with the excessive amounts of money awash in the game I'm sure something could be done

QUOTE

'Before the academies came along, how many 15/16/17 year olds played 1st team football or got near?.....compare that to now...they're coming along all the time even at Premiership level (Vaughn, Rooney, Hobbs, Fabregas, half Arsenals team)....If the kids are playing against the best players in the country from 8-9, surely they will be better players sooner.'

The thing here is money wasn't awash as it is now and neither where squads as big - I'd hazard a guess though % wise there won't be much difference.

QUOTE

Abolute garbage...by the time they are 15/16, they're past the point of potential development.

QUOTE

It seems that Woy was ahead of his time then, because this is the kind of thing that Academies are encouraging more of at the moment....street football, with no coaches etc....it's supposed to allow the kids to come out of themselves and organise everythig with each other......4 a side is the big thing at the moment at Academy level....its a directive from the FA.

Seem to be contradicting yourself here with the 'Absolute Garbage' response then seeing as you have 'experience'

Wouldn't say he was ahead of his time, probably just realised its about gettting the fundamentals right first - before trying to be a flash/ tricky player etc - that comes as you mature

Everybody learns differently and at different levels - playing football needs to be enjoyed in my book and letting kids develop 'naturally' will help more than the disciplined mollycoddling nature installed at the academies.

As I have asked before - do trainees still clean the boots of the 'first team squad' etc or clean the changing rooms?

That is a good article.

I think that the main problem these days is the parents of these 8 and 9 year olds.

The way celebrity culture is effecting the country, there are a lot of pushy parents hoping that their son can be the next big thing and have all the celebrity trimmings that go with it, especially when they seen in the press people like walcott and the kids at utd.

We need the parents to back off and the clubs to treat the kids as kids. Let the teenagers play football but also teach them some humiliaty and keep their feet on the ground by making them clean the first team boots and changing rooms.

Went to see the reserves in a very entertaining game. 3-0 is a fair reflection of the game, perhaps a goal too high but rovers ran out comfortable winners in the end.

Rovers edged the first half, competitive match but the chances fell to rovers. Hodge ended a good move with an excellent left footed strike to give rovers a deserved lead. Second half Boro faded a bit, and rovers began to dominate the game. Despite taking off three of our stronger reserves (Carlos, Doran and Benni) rovers got the second. Hodge scored with a neat header after good build up play on the right. This knocked the stuffing completely out of Boro, and rovers duely got a goal, Blackman converting a low cross from the right, which really ought to have been cleared.

Based on today's performances we've a few promising youths coming through.

Gunning - centre half. Dealt with anything in an assured manner. No nonsense, but coped well with some awkward balls. Also made a few good contributions to the attack too. Does anyone know how old he is? I've been very impressed each time I've seen him, and he didn't look out of place next to Zurab, who is clearly a premiership player from his reserve performances.

Hodge - to be honest my view of the lad so far has been busy but not too effective despite his business. That wasn't the case today, busy and effective. As well as two excellent goals his passing was good and he made some telling tackles.

Doran - quiet game by his standards, being stuck on the left really hampers his game. Ok, Blackman can't play on the left, whereas Doran can, but Doran's clearly right footed. The lad had no problem beating his man, but had to turn back onto his right foot to whip in the crosses, which limited his effectiveness. For his development Doran must be played on the right, as he is wasted on the left.

As for the rest, Olsson and Simpson looked quite promising going forwards, somewhat less promising defensively. I wonder if their better position would be midfield. Simpson in particular was tearing up the right wing in the second half, and to be fair was pretty solid but managed to fit in his trademark utterly pointless and reckless tackle.

Blackman looked ok on the wing, but better up front, albeit against a demoralised boro team. Aside from his goal, he found the space to shoot well on another occassion and looked pretty lively up front.

With regards to the first team:

Carlos was Carlos, sublime skill, some brilliant passes, but no strength or speed whatsoever. If only he could bulk up or learn to run...

Benni looked talented and unbothered.

Grella completed 90 minutes - yes that's a whole 90 minutes. He dictated the play for the first 70 or so before running out of steam (he probably didn't realise matches lasted 90 minutes.)

A couple of final points:

Firstly who is the other guy who hangs round the technical area with our reserve team coach? Maybe I've only just started noticing but there seem a lot more people in the technical area then before at our reserve games.

Secondly for all Big Sam's long ball approach the reserves play some pretty nice attacking football when they play well, not the hoof it forward and long throw business at all. In fact when playing well the reserves play some pretty attractive stuff. Maybe this is the style Sam would prefer us to play more of if we had the first team players to do so.

There was more than usual for an ewood reserve game, most of the extras being kids. (As an aside it was a tad cringe-worthy hearing them mimic some of the adult chants in inappropriate places.)

Having said that I'm surprised that there wasn't more - it was at the end of the fun day and was free and we had a fair few stars out there. The lower jack walker blackburn end half was pretty full though, although I've no idea what that equates into in terms of actual numbers.

Edit: didn't go to the fun day, so no idea how it went. There were a lot more children then usual at the reserves which I take as a sign of success. Also maybe the 6pm ko didn't help supporters get there from work in time.

Why go into detail about how that Man United player did? Probably won't be here at the end of the season anyway. Shouldn't have been made welcome here in the first place.

Firstly, he's captain of our reserves, which is not entirely an insignificant position. The guy has some (albeit limited) influence on our players. In fact in the last match he talked Blackman out of getting a booking.

Secondly he plays for MY team blackburn rovers. Ok he's on loan but how he does for us impacts on how well our reserves.

Thirdly, whilst I don't think the lad is good enough, he is a really nice bloke and is very good with the fans. He's certainly beyond reproach in terms of his attitude and his behaviour whilst at blackburn.
