Also, if you were making an implication as to the amount of time I spend watching Rovers, well I am very proud to tell you that I see a lot, especially when you consider that I either have to make the journey from London, or as is the case for most games, Canterbury, and on a large student debt. I have already been to Ewood for both home games, and should be attending Chelsea away next week.

Sadly tcj, the fact you feel the need to say this renders any further discussion with you pointless. I was making no such implication, not could any be gleamed from what I said.

Although having said that, I believe you to be wrong.

If it makes any difference I actually misread your post with Eddie over Peter as questioning Eddie how many minutes he had seen of Peter as opposed to the number of minutes Peter had featured for the first team. Obviously living in France, Eddie does not get that many opportunities to see Rovers. I misread that implication with Eddie and thought you were further applying it to me.

I know that Ooijer has not played a particularly high number of games at right back for Rovers, as Peter has played very few at left wing, but in certain instances you can tell quite quickly when a player is not suited to a particular position, it is not a question of his quality (although I do sometimes doubt Ooijers.

In any case, I'm sorry that you feel that way. I sometimes become frustrated by people who make assertions about a player or a team without seeing anything of them. Being proud as I am by my commitment, I hate the idea of people thinking that I am not.

I guess we just have differing views of Ooijer. If Emerton were ever injured, I'd love to be proved wrong, but I don't think that Ooijer is a fit replacement. That was my original point.

I think it would be better to keep Rovers a big secret and just pick up the prizes at the end of the season an embarrass all conected with the media in this country.

You will never know how much I agree with your post.

Let's just keep quiet and let the "big four" have a "let's see how high we can pee up against the wall" competition. Very quietly we can creep in there and have a bit of an input.

Fingers crossed.

More like "keep your legs crossed" and build up the pressure for a big whooooooooosh up the wall.

There have been a few comments that have come out of Rovers- MGP the latest- that we are shooting for top 4 so Rovers are not exactly being retentive...

It has been met without comment apart from the Square Football article.

I guess it could be part of the psychological build-up for Chelsea. I don't think we dare take a stuffing down there as the press will throw those comments back at Rovers with interest!

My take is that we have the deepest squad quality ever. If we have an "ordinary" season for injuries and suspensions, we are probably OK to sustain a challenge for European places. The wheels sort of come off if say we lose Friedel, Nelsen, Emerton, Bentley and Roque all at the same time as the African Nations.

Taking that scenario further, were that to happen (eight players out) then I guess Hughes would select:

Brown

Ooijer

Zurab

Henchoz

Warnock

Reid

Savage

Dunn

MGP

Roberts

Derbyshire

subs Enckelman, Tugay, Rigters, Berner, Peter- and still the kids don't get a chance.

That side could be good enough to take quite a few points from the fixtures we have whilst the African Nations is on but would get decisively knocked out if we draw one of the big 4 in the FA Cup

Of course, the transfer window will be open in January and I am confident that if the Trust still owns the club then, Rovers have managed their resources in such a way that they could make a decisive move in the transfer market. New ownership would presumably mean more spending money but as seen this summer it also means we could afford to buy Kenwynne Jones instead of Roque Santa Cruz. I guess the entire senior management of the Rovers would have to be hospitalised in an isolation unit with no telephones or internet before that happened!

But we arent Chelsea are we....

We cant have a tip top player in exactly the same mould as the others.

Centre midfield is our weak point at the moment.

I disagree.

Like you say we can't have "a Gerrard" in every position with "a Fabregas" as cover.

Dunn Savage Tugay Reid Mokoena looks pretty solid to me. Bentley could also drop into central midfield if needed.

Imo if there is an area of concern it's if anything long term happens to Nelsen or Samba. Are Zurab/Ooijer/Henchoz good enough?.

I don't really think so but again, as back up, by Blackburn Rovers standards it's a pretty impressive range of options.

Just going back to the original linked article, I think it was quite fair in the appraisal of out squad limitations - but what was missing was some perspective with the relative lack of money we have spent compared to most of the other clubs in the league.

Its all well saying we might be a bit thin on cover in some positions - but look at how little we spend! This point was missing from the article I thought.

Is it true that only Reading spent less than us this summer?

From what I have seen of Ooijer in his time at Rovers, I'd be inclined to say he is a pretty poor right back. He is not a fit replacement for Emerton (who thought I'd be saying that a season or two ago?!) In fact, Ooijer doesn't fill me with confidence even at centre back. Maybe I haven't seen enough of him in the centre - he should be quality considering his number of dutch caps and the number of times he's captained his country.

Right now, I think we could deal with an injury to almost every member of the team quite easily, except for Friedel, Emerton and Bentley who, right now, are irreplaceable. I would add Pedersen to that list, but he has been somewhat off form recently.

He's a pretty decent centre half from what I've seen of him in a Rovers shirt. Certainly not a right back though, he turns like an oil tanker.

The problem with Ooijer as a full back (he's more than able at centre back) for me isn't the defensive side of things. He'll always do a solid and unspectacular job down the right flank, he won't stand out there but he'll keep us solid enough.

Where the trouble occurs is that Bentley looks half the player when he hasn't got Emerton galloping alongside him, and half-a-Bentley is far more damaging to Rovers than a slightly weaker full back.
