Jozy Altidore. Bought him from NY Red Bulls my first season. Expected to buy him to send to Brugge, but he got a permit and I ended up turning down 10m bids for him after his first half season. Put a price tag of 30mil on him - good partnership with Benni. Was told he was getting better because I played him, so don't buy him to sit on the bench.

i finished 4th in the league with benni mccarthy golden boot winner and now im in champions league qualitfyers :D

wat a first season i had

I won the Prem in my first season, in my second season I'm 2nd - 9 points behind United with 3 games in hand - with us having 9 to play. In the second season I also won the Charity Shield, runner-up in league cup, got knocked out in 1st knock-out stage of Champions League - but have the FA Cup final to look forward to. Got Elano for 12.5m - pure class.

Anyone got this on PSP, my brother got one for christmas and I'm thinking of getting this for it.

I have got it on the PSP - it's not bad - but a very watered down version.

If you've got it on the PC - I wouldnt bother with the PSP version - but if you want a very simple handheld management sim it might be worth it.

I've noticed Sergio Peter is a tad overrated too, from season 2 onwards he becomes a regular in the side and even moved to Arsenal on one save I had.

Haven't found that myself so far. I've barely played him...I find his main usefulness is in being on the bench since he can cover both wings in case of injury or fatigue, and because he is a home grown player therefore handy for the European competition squads. I think his starting stats are rated about right.

The most frustrating aspect of this version of the game is the board's tendency to sell players from under me. Fortunately this has only happened when I was just testing ahead to see whether players could get work permits etc (so I don't miss out on other options if they can't)...and one time they tried to sell Bentley when a 7.5 million bid was offered. This was preposterous since he is valued at 5.5 million anyway, and I was capable of getting much much more for him (In the proper version of it I actually got 15 million...5 million up front, 10 million over 24 months...I love to do my business this way. It leaves you a little short on dough in the short term- although you do get about half of the late money up front for your budget, it's just your board will whine about you being in the red- but in the long term you basically get twice as much for your players). Another time, in the proper version I got 5 mill up front with 25 mill over 2 years for Samba from Chelsea, after telling them to bid what I thought they wouldn't. I didn't actually want to sell at this, but the board did...thankfully when it came to the accept or reject deal bit for the final sale, the board didn't intervene as they usually do, so I cancelled the deal. However, the one I'm really worried about has reared its head in a test I ran, and I'm hoping it won't happen. I bought Nedum Onuoha from City. He's excellent- pace and acceleration 19, and most key defensive stats 15, 16 or higher. Paid 8 mill and it was a git getting him too. So, Chelsea bid 15 million and I told them to come back with 20 million plus another 40 mill over 2 years, and a 35 percent sell on clause. Usually, a club either comes back with exactly what you ask, or withdraws their offer altogether. However in this case, the game decided Chelsea would come back with 53 mill in total, only 15 of which was up front, and of course Williams duly obliged them. This is a disaster for me if it happens. He is my best defender, and it's impossible for me to get anybody as good to replace him. Even though I finished 3rd in my first season, I'm still perceived as little old Rovers, and the best defenders are being watched by teams like Juve, who they would prefer to go to. So they're not going to agree terms even though I can pay out for them. But even if they did, my balance after the sale is about 15 million, even though my budget is about 40 million. If the board were sensible human beings they wouldn't mind, knowing fortunes will roll in soon. But last time I was in debt about equal to my starting debt after doing ace dealings that meant we were in a safe financial position for the next two years, my board became 'very disappointed' with the state of the club's finances and I was worried about getting the sack. So it will become literally impossible to replace Onuoha, but my board's expectations have risen! I may have to add a new manager in charge of Chelsea to stop this happening! Worse still, in the test a very similar thing happened to Nelsen, my next best defender. According to my assistant defence was already the weakest part of my team.

Anyway, rant over...hopefully the patch can clear some of that but I doubt it. A tip for new players- Villareal have about a million excellent wingers. Several of them are off on loan at other clubs. I've just signed Santi Cazorla from them, who is first rate, but there's tons of others that are good enough. I think the other good one is called Cani. Also, sell off most of the youth players at the club, but always make sure you don't just lose them to contract expiration, except the ones worth almost nothing. Ok, 99.5 percent of them will never see your first team, but 99 percent of them will make you a profit. Their youth wages come to about 8k a year usually, and they can net you anywhere from 5k to a million if you nurture them right, sell at the right time, and of course, ask for the money in installments over 24 months. Take an active interest in your youth teams- find promising youngsters going out of contract or available at next to nothing and snap them up...this feels less morally wrong than just snapping up everyone coming onto a free who is worth a million or so then selling them (which I used to do to, I confess), since it is more like the Wenger strategy of hoovering up young talent, keeping the ones that make it and offloading the ones who aren't up to it. I'm sure everyone already knows to scour brazil and argentina...having Cercle as a feeder club makes work permits far less annoying than they used to be, and there is even a bit of a cheat you can use (or rather, a programming hole to exploit) which means you can have any non-European playing for your team almost instantly. If anyone is interested, contact me for details. I don't use it myself. On the topic of Cercle, I recommend you activate the Belgian League at the start of the game. I didn't, and I'm annoyed that I can't get match reports on the Brazillians I've sent over there (although my 'the next Ronaldo' guy is blasting the goals in at almost 1.5 a game). You can only get match reports on active leagues.

I'd hesitate on sending players out on loan for reasons other than work permits. I don't know if anybody else feels differently, but for me it appears that players' stats don't develop as quickly at other clubs. They don't seem to benefit from the training regime like they can under your own guidance at Rovers...with the right staff, top facilities, and distributing the training jobs for the coaches personally, which is extremely important. Get a coach who specialises in attacking (don't look for what else they coach, only their mental attributes and working with youth), defending, etc, one for every every main speciality and a few for technical (which covers set pieces, shooting and ball control it seems), and have them train a category alone. The star rating for that category will leap up. Apologies to anyone who already knows this. Ignore how many staff your board tell you to have too, they won't usually prevent you getting more til you've got quite a bit more than they suggest. Think I have 12 coaches and I'm supposed to have 8.

I'm sure there's something else I wanted to rant about, but I don't recall!

Just got through reading the patch adjustments on the official site...seems the threshold for chairmen selling players from under you has been raised, thank god for that. Quite a few other things that I'd noticed have been improved with it too...although one sounds like not enough. On my game, I always play hard tackling- which seems to have the problem that virtually EVERY goal I score from a corner gets disallowed for a foul. The patch updates say 'slight' improvement to this...hopefully it's a lot more than that, I don't even celebrate when I score from a corner anymore because I know it will be disallowed.

Anyway, does anybody know if installing the patch means I have to start over again? Or can I just install it and the adjustments will kick in now on my saved game?

Something that I have found stops the chairmen selling my players from under me - is by putting in massive minimum release fee clauses.

Every player I sign or give a new contract to gets a 120m minimum fee release clause.

I've not had a single player sold from under me with that in the contract on either FM07 or FM08

Surely that just stops them being sold from under you when the fee is met? Or does it make the chairman think that the player's value is 120 million? I usually don't allow any minimum fee release clauses unless they're exceptionally high compared to the player's likely value, and only then in a negotiation I'm worried I might lose versus another club, but I tend to avoid them altogether.

I just bought Marcus Williams from Scunthorpe for 600k in the summer before my second season. And before the season has started, Middlesborough slapped in a 6 million bid (cash up front) with a 30 percent sell on clause, because that's what I asked for, thinking they wouldn't pay it! And of course my chairman wants to accept it, so I now need to find another class left back...well, he was only backup for Warnock anyway, but he's not much worse and I expect him to improve to a good level since he's only 22. Just downloaded the patch though so perhaps I can avoid this. Incidentally I've had trouble with left backs...haven't found one better than Warnock that is available to me, and it's now the weakest part of my defence. Anybody found any good ones?

Corey Gibbs is a good backup LB/CB. I was playing Hull and saw that Gibbs was on the Rovers squad that finished 3rd the first season. When I played Rovers I picked him up and he has been solid and doesn't complain about sitting on the bench.

Yeh, I saw him around, he was on my radar for a while and cheap, but I decided against him ultimately. Think I felt his crossing and dribbling was a bit lower than I wanted, I like fullbacks to be able to assist the attacks, even though I don't tell them to push.

The Marcus Williams thing got even more ridiculous last night when I was playing around to see how much they would actually pay. 10 million! For a player I bought from Scunthorpe two months earlier for 600k and hadn't even played in a competitive game yet!! Absolutely ludicrous...the sheer money they're offering makes me wonder whether there's some reason I should keep him...anyone further along in the game know if he turns out to be a superstar?

I can't remember everyone off the top of my head - I'll make a list when I get home.

The main one was Mika Aarialto - who was a god in my first season behind the strikers - replaced him with Elano now though.

My Blackburn team hoverred around 7th for about 4 years last time I managed them, though oddly enough I did win the league in the first season with Reading without really buying anyone significant except Meite from Bolton for £3.5m.

Did you do reloads or edit any players? I just can't see how you can win the title with us first year round without one of those two things happening. Best I've ever done in the first season is 4th.

No I didn't reload or do any edits. As Tango showed - winning it with Reading - it is possible. You just need some luck with injuries - and hope that the other big clubs take points off each other.

I won it in my second season - looked unlikely - then Manchester United went into administration and were deducted 9 points just before the end of the season. That has never happened on any game I've played before - if only that would happen in real life. I tried to steal Ronaldo, Rooney and Tevez but ended up just getting Anderson.

My team in season three is now (usually this, but I've got a lot of good players competing for places)

Friedel - Warnock, Breno, Nelsen, Ratinho/Samba - Cana, A.Diarra, Anderson, Elano - Briand, McCarthy

Of the Rovers players at the start of the game - that are still in my squad:

Friedel is class - still quality in season 3.

Warnock is a very solid left back - rarely injured.

Nelsen - very good - has attracted interest from Barcelona on my game

Samba - also quality - have been using him at both centre-back and right-back and he does a good job at both.

Bentley - is decent - but just a squad player now - but Bayern are looking at him.

MGP - hardly gets a game for me - in fact he's behind....

Treacy - in the pecking order. Treacy turns out a half-decent squad player.

Savage - did a good job for the first two seasons - but then released him as I had Kehl, Cana and A.Diarra who are all better players.

McCarthy - scores loads of goals for me. 20 odd in first season, over 30 in 2nd. Showing some signs of ageing by season 3 - but still a great goalscorer.

Santa Cruz - Doesn't score that many - but is a good target man, quick and sets goals up. He got about 17 goals and 17 assists in my second season.

Zak Jones - not sure if he's gone random ability - but on mine he looks a good keeper. Decent all round stats with low eccentricity and low tendency to punch.

Mokoena - decentish squad player - can play centre half and defensive midfield....much better than real life.

Dunn - in my reserves - he's ok, but not good enough for a top of the table team

Derbyshire - out on loan at Derby in the Prem - he's a decent squad player. Worth keeping as low wages and loves Rovers.

My best tip for Rovers is target the best youngster when you start and have little money. I play a quite direct 4-1-2-1-2.

I keep meaning to find the list of exactly who I bought - but the likes of Aarialto, Piatti, Marin, Alex were all bought. I also got Matt Hill as back-up for Warnock - though the fans weren't impressed with him.

Off the top of my head (I'm at work) - my squad is something like this now...

KEEPERS:

Brad Friedel, Oier Olazabal, Richard Lee, Zak Jones

DEFENDERS:

Warnock, Nelsen, Breno, Samba, Ratinho, Mokoena, Matterazzi, El-Mourabet, Hill, Lucius, Justin Hoyte, Victor

MIDFIELDERS:

Kehl, Cana, A.Diarra, MGP, Bentley, Marin, Piatti, Elano, Treacy, Fleck, Dalla Valle, Anderson

STRIKERS:

McCarthy, Briand, Santa Cruz, Stancu, James Vaughan, Derbyshire,

I've also got these on loan at Cercle Brugge trying to get Work Permits:

Matias Cahais, Alex, Anselo Ramon
