never played the game before but it's took me 2 weeks to play a full season and the things that annoy me are the press before every game and the amount of offside goals is just stupid!

The press thing annoys me a bit - I tend to just no comment before games. As for the offsides - that's Benni for you.

That field used to be used by the game, but it isn't anymore, so it does not matter.

Oh, a bit strange that it isn't used if it's in the data editor.

LW, if you're not making comments to the press, you're missing some good opportunities to rev your team up before games.

I've got the save game data editor now...got my stadium back to a 40k one, which was the only reason I installed it really. Oh and whilst I was at it I made us hate Bolton a bit more. Shame you don't seem to be able to add new rivals though, I can't understand why we aren't down as having a dislike of Manure, and to a lesser extent Brum. It's a bit stranger when you see that Alex Ferguson hates us to the tune of 80 percent - he only hates Arsenal and Liverpool more - and Karren Brady and David Gould are down as our 'disliked personnel'. They know we hate Diouf too, but surely every team in the league does! The problem with the save game editor is I keep being tempted to take a sneak peak at players' 'potential ability' stats. I'm not editing anymore data, but it's a bit too tempting to take a look at that. It doesn't make too much difference since the scouts I have are good enough that they pretty much just tell me anyway, but I prefer seeing the actual number rather than the stars.

ive just finished my 2nd season with rovers, finished 7th and got an intertoto place

current team - friedel, ignashevoch, warnock, nelsen, samba, arshavin, mgp, reid, makoun, doyle, mccarthy

best bit of business i did was selling peter for 6m

or maybe buying sidwell for 1.4m and then swapping him + 2.5m for jean II makoun!

I brought in Doyle and Ignashevic in my Wigan game, both great signings. However, I also bought in Peter and Samba from Rovers, the board saying the money was too good to turn down (£2.7m for Peter and £2m for Samba). Peter had something like 13 assists in the 25 - 30 games I played before having to prioritise work, while Samba has been one of my most consistent players.

While I couldn't afford him in this game, Van Der Vaart is by far the best value for money signing in the - circa £10m for one of the best midfielders in the game!

Doyle costs a fair bit, but he's a always good for goals.

I got Ignashevic immediately for Blackburn...he's a good defender for a free, that's for sure. Snapping up Samba like that is a good move for anyone at the start of the game, come to think on it. He only starts valued at 300k or something, the price we paid Hertha, because they treat him like he only just arrived even though he's been there half a season. And the board always take a player's supposed face value into account when considering whether to go over your head. So he's probably always available for 2 mill at the start. His value shoots up quick though.

Van der Vaart is awesome, went to Barca on mine though and I can't prise him away despite my success and the fact he's now listed by request. According to the save game editor I'm not far from continental reputation though, which should be enough to start pulling in the real stars (might be able to get giovanni dos santos on a free if I'm lucky)

Reid went to Liverpool for £9.5 million

Nelsen to Reading for £4.5 million

I sold Bentley, he went to Aston Villa for £7.5 million + £5million if he plays for England + Ashley Young in swap (Worth £11 million on his own)

Signed Saivet for £2.5 million, Carlos Alberto for £4m, Mikel (Loan), Skrtel (£1.5m) and Sturridge for £7.5m from City – also signed a number of promising kids who are in the reserves/ on loan.

Season 2 has just been complete and for the 1st time ever for me I won the quadrouple winning the League (4pts in front of United after beating them 3-1 on the final day), League Cup (Spuds 2-1), FA Cup (Arsenal 2-0) & Champs League (Juve 2-1 Aet).

In pre-season and I have just been offered the Greece job, which has been declined. Iv some how made friends with Wenger, Grant, Curbishley & Lippi all praising me. Altidore’s value is now up to £7m. Piatti’s value is up to £3.5m although iv just had a £10m offer from Roma. Young has been a cracking signing for me.

Only thing that is annoying me is the stadium bug, as it reduces after a save, once I have spent money developing it! Can this bug be downloaded anywhere and can it be installed part way through a game??

In case anyone doesn't know, it is essential to sign Lulinha and Ever Banega. According to the save game data editor, Lulinha's potential ability is 196. That's better than Ronaldo. In fact it appears to be better than anyone. He cost me 9 million, but I believe he's available cheaper earlier in the game. Banega is just very good. He seems to be underrated by the scouts and whatnot, and isn't playing for me quite as well yet as I think he should be able to, but his stats are through the roof. It's a shame he's a 'natural' defensive midfielder but can't tackle that great. He'd be better as a natural central mid, which I'm trying to train him up to.

I'd recommend Antonio Floro Flores highly. I was a little unsure at first because his composure is very low so I thought he wouldn't score enough, but he bags plenty. Fortunately I grabbed him at 575k, but I doubt you'll be as lucky. He won player of the tournament in the Champions League for me. Got 21 assists over the season, and something similar in goals. I had a hell of a season- won the league on goal difference, finals of the FA Cup and Champions League, but lost both. Finally I'm able to attract the top players...getting Christian Zapata on a free, awesome defender. What I'm really struggling for is a brilliant, brilliant keeper. I want Cech or Buffon but neither is interested yet and costs wayyyy too much. Craig Gordon is very good, but I have a couple of reservations about him and he would cost upwards of 20 million, blowing my budget. I'm using Tomasz Kusczak at the moment, he's very overrated but he's still not the world class player I'm looking for. Anybody got good goalie suggestions?

The only way around this really (apart from downloading the patch, which may or may not solve it after you've already started the game and built a stadium) is to get the save game data editor (just google it). With that, it's very easy to change your stadium capacity to what it should be (I also raised the maximum building potential of Ewood to 50k, as I reasoned we might be able to get close to that with a fully developed Riverside and four corners in the ground! It's amazing the attendances you get with Rovers on this game if you're doing well- two seasons completed and I'm already expanding the stadium to 50k).

If anyone can download both the save game editor and also the latest patches for Football Manager 08 - with fixes and new transfers and send them me it would be appreciated. Any football manager download site is blocked at work so I cant download them.

Help please

As for keepers - Bouzanis becomes a very good keeper if you get him and play him and should be available for less than £0.5m – don’t worry about his stats – he quickly improves. There is also a very good keeper in the french top league. Il find the name tonight.

I'm languishing around 10th in the table but want a top 7 finish but we are so inconsistent. Can't settle on a midfield pairing. I use Mokoena, Marin, Salmonensen, Reid, Sav and Dunn.

In Europe I'm unbeaten and lost the FA Cup and League cup semi finals to Chelsea both times, after playing Manchester Utd in the Quarters both times and beating them on penalties both times.

Friedel is still playing for me as a backup in 2013 - Murcia is my starter and just won player of the month.

Anyone else seeing that penalties are being missed about 80% of the time?

I'll do that Hughesy, tomorrow probably, unless you reply quickly. Just PM me your email address.

As for the French keeper, are you talking about Benoit Costil? I signed him on 2006, he was amazing. But on this he doesn't appear quite as good, and Arsenal have already signed him anyway.

ADB- sign Banega and Lulinha, you'll be fine. Incidentally, Lulinha is better straight away than his stats suggest, played very well for me, netting something like 12 goals in 21 games. Also you might want to sign Ghaly if he's cheap, I got him for about half a million. My scouts didn't rate him that highly (at one point recently claiming he's a two star player), and the fans hated the fact I bought him. They were all wrong. He's scored quite a few goals for me, and performs very solidly. He is very good at all set pieces, which makes him a handy player to have, especially if you don't have specialists in each type. Scored plenty of free kicks.

I'd say more like 30 percent of the penalties in my experience. And I have a very poor set of penalty takers. In shootouts it seems more common. It's headed goals being disallowed for fouls that occurs 80 percent of the time and naffs me off. Cheers for the keeper hint, I'll take a look. There's a lot of decent keepers around goalkeeping stats-wise, but my scouts keep saying they're not all that. Dunno whether to believe them though after the Ghaly thing. But it does make me wonder if they have low consistency or something, or whether those mental attributes matter more than I think.

I trust the scouts on my game, most of them have stats of 20 or 19 for potential factors. Generally when my scouts do a report, im not interested unless they say either he can be better than my best player in that position or he is already better.

Iv just signed a keeper last night from Barcelona (on my game – not sure if he starts there) he’s Brazilian called something like Cassio – he had a release clause of just £2.2m and my scouts rated him as a good player.

Finished off my 3rd pre-season last night – won all the games, except for 1 against my reserves – they beat me 3-1 so there is obviously some potential in there. Played the charity shield in which we beat United 2-0 and won the 1st game of the new season against Pompey 1-0 after Dodgy Harry said we wouldn’t win the title this year!

After my last successful season I currently have a bank balance of £58m with a transfer budget of £38m to spend. Season tickets have just sold out for the season and the club are increasing the stadium to 40k again, even though they have done once and it was lost. They are also improving the youth facilities – hopefully it wont lose this!!

Blue bruce - iv PM you. Cheers

You won't lose the youth facilities improvements. I'm quite annoyed with my board because my youth and main facilities are 17 (out of 20...using the data editor to check it), but I have about 50 million in the bank, and yet they won't bloody improve it! If they don't change it for next season I may have to edit it and take something like 5 million out my account, as it's pretty daft that they keep saying it doesn't need improvement yet we continually produce tosh. I got offered a Japanese club as a feeder when I was running ahead to test something, would have cost me a million a year but claimed I would get merchandising benefits. Does anybody know if this is likely to make me money? When I ran the game for real though I didn't get that offer (it's very irritating how you can't choose what country and type of feeder relation you want), so I've ended up with Sheffield United. Should be handy to test some of my better backup players- and with them I expect Sheff will be able to get promotion. It seems that when your club's reputation reaches continental you get better feeder options. Looking forward to managing worldclass. I want to get a whole bunch of feeders, probably pick up a new one every year or something. Would be interesting to check out the foreign markets stuff.

Hughesy, I wouldn't completely trust your scouts on everything. They do get it wrong, and mine are perfect. Sometimes they tell me a player is two or three stars, I sign him, ask their opinion again and they say four stars. Sometimes you have to trust your own instincts on how good their stats are, and forget about the scouts. Plus, they often say a player isn't a worthwhile signing, and then they at least end up making me a fortune. For instance, early on I bought John Jairo Mosquera, a columbian u-21 striker, for 4k, and got that advice. I sent him to Brugge, he did fairly well, he's just come back with Belgian nationality, but he isn't good enough for me. I offered him around and three clubs are willing to pay me 13 million for him (11.75 mill of it over 2 years) plus a 50 percent sell-on clause!! Quite looking forward to selling off my other lesser players. Plus, Lulinha admittedly I signed on the basis of Ferrereinha's report which said he has 7 (or it might have been 8) star potential ability. But when he arrived, he was soon saying it was 5 star ability, and is still only saying 5 or 6 stars. The truth is he was right the first time and Lulinha has huge potential ability. By the way Hughesy, if you get the patch, one of the things it changes is it lowers the accuracy of scouts with a high 'potential ability' stat.

I'm doing a ludicrous amount of trading, tons of incomings, mostly frees. Sorin, Zapata, Kirkland, and a bunch of youthies. I don't want to sell players until they've been contracted for at least a year though, as I think it will reduce my 'club/player loyalty' stat, which is already down to 8. And this might deter signings or reduce team loyalty to me. But I'll be absolutely minted when I let them all go. And I'll have lots of quality left over.

Oh, hint for everyone. I'm currently trying to sign a very good right back called Marvin Angulo. He is going to cost me about 13 million. However, I saw that at the start of the 2007-2008 season he was bought for about 500k. I don't know if this means he's bought before you do anything at all, but he's worth a look! I think another talented defender I'm looking at, with 5 star potential, Matias Cahais from Boca, might also have been available for 500k at the start. Currently paying about 6 million for him and kicking myself I didn't find him sooner. I also recommend you always have some top scouts (and it's DEFINITELY worth investing everything you can in having as many as you can, especially ones who are perfect or near perfect at judging potential) scouting major countries and especially the active leagues. Mine keep unearthing gems of youth players with four or five star potential available very cheap. This is pretty essential for Europe, because if you can get them at age 17 they will eventually qualify as the club's home grown players, which will help massively in Europe of course.

Incidentally Hughesy, how did you get such a large balance? I've bought pretty well I feel (although I do tend to use almost all my budget), and sold very well too. And I'm in the same season as you but only managed a 51 mill balance with a 30 mill budget.

I tend to buy young players at the beginning and then progress them via loans, limited 1st team games etc. I then sell my older players for big money. I continue to buy young players and look for frees throughout the game. Very rarely do I spend over £7.5m on a player. Infact only Sturridge from City so far has cost me that.

My young talent consists of Sturridge, Stokes, Piatti, Altidore, Breno (Centre Defence), Van Borre, Bouzanis(Keeper – reserve), Kirov (Left Winger - reserve), Eduardo (Brazilian Defender/ Defensive Midfield). And that’s just my best young talent – I have much more in the reserves which are developing well - hence why they beat my 1st team in a friendly 3-1.

Il get you a list tonight of who I have and what they cost/ compared to current value.

My average age of my 1st team squad is just 23 at the moment – although that is still high for me. It’s usually either 21 or 22.

I have much the same policy though. I have far too many players at present, but in a year (because of what I said about wanting to help my club/player loyalty stat) I will be able to sell them for a fortune. I just hope it doesn't upset the team balance too much first (I currently have over a hundred players in senior training, over 30 of whom came at the start of the July window, and I'm in the process of getting a few more). A few of them I will keep though...Luis Peralta (doesn't start the game methinks, don't bother looking for him) with 5 star potential for instance, looking forward to having him as a homegrown kid. My reserves don't perform well at all (3rd bottom last season) but that's probably because I keep most of my reserve players in the first team squad for ease of access if I need them.

It's very annoying though that I managed to sell Mosquera for 13 million to any of 3 clubs (and tons more were interested but couldn't afford it), yet can't sell Moraes (who was described as the new Ronaldo) for even 1 million by offering him around. Not that I'd sell him for that, I just wanted to see if anyone cared. Moraes is a far better striker, and in precisely the same period on loan at Brugge as Mosquera far surpassed his record. He got something close to a 7.5 average in both seasons, scored 14 in 10 games in his first season followed by about 30 in 32 the second season. And yet nobody is interested??? I've loaned him to Sheff United now, hopefully if he does well at that level he will attract some interest. It's bizarre how my best players are often the ones I struggle to shift.

Cech is available, but seems like for something like 80 million and he won't come even though Chelsea finished 8th whilst I won the league, and I've just become the Czech Republic manager, which ought to be interesting.

Anybody know if I will still get offered the England job, if it becomes available and I'm good enough, whilst managing another country?

Thankfully the feeder club thing I was moaning about has changed. Now I've been in charge longer, I can choose what kind of affiliation I want, so Asian market here I come.

Managed to copy over my save game file & tactic, so when iv unloaded and reloaded the game I have still been able to access my saved game!! Get in!! However im still patch-less. After 9 games gone in my 3rd season, I am currently 2nd, 1 pt behind Chelsea with a game in hand, 6pts clear of 3rd already – and have beaten both Liverpool & Arsenal this season!! Both myself and Chelsea are unbeaten in 16 league games. Finished off the quadruple winning season by winning the Charity Shield and more recently by claiming the Super Cup against Barca on Penalties after a 2-2 draw.

Usually after 1 good full season the board allow you to choose your type of feeder. I tend to try and get 4 or more feeder clubs if possible – however im currently down to 2, in Circle Bruge (Work permits) and Cork City (as I have the Irish league running). I also had Blackpool but iv just sacked them off as they are down to league 2 and most of my players wont join them. I tend to try to get 1 work permit, 2 national loan deals, 1 international/ or 1 commercial deal.

I don’t have that many players (100) – too many there to allow them to develop. Last night I had 58 in senior training and that’s plenty. My 1st team squad is usually only made up of around 22-24 players, all the rest are either in the reserves, on loan or at a feeder club. When internationals are played, I currently have 28 players going on international duty.

My current 1st team squad is made up of the following.

Friedel

Vande Borre – Cost £5m – now worth £7m

Breno – (Brazilian wonder kid) Cost £3.5m – now worth £5.5m

Eduardo – (Brazilian wonder kid) Cost £2.9m, now worth £6m

Samba – Now worth £9.5m

Skrtel – Signed for £1.9m, now worth £4.5m

Warnock – Now worth £4.5m

Spanish defender – Cant think of his name – Signed from Villareal – CD, DM

Also signed some Norwegian Defender from Arsenal for £5m – not sure on the name.

Bangera – Cost £1.8m, now worth £7.5m

Mokoena – Now worth £4m

Carlos Alberto – Cost £4m, now worth £5.5m – is unhappy because he rarely gets a game

Piatti – Cost £900k, now worth £3.8m –Turned down a £14m offer for him (Geordies)

Stokes – Signed for £4m, now worth £5.5m

Young – Signed for free part x with Bentley + £7.5m – Worth £11m

Pedersen – Worth 10m

Saviet – Signed for £2.5m, now worth £3.2m (After 6 months)

Denilson (Cost £4m from Arsenal – now worth

Zeefuik – Signed for £700k, now worth £2.7m (Only played 1 first team game)

Altidore – Signed for £1m, Now worth £7.75m

McCarthy – Worth £7m

Cruz – Worth £6.75m

Derbyshire – Worth £5.5m

Sturridge – Signed for £7.5m, now worth £6.75m (Only played 5x (Sub) in 2 seasons)

My reserves are currently 1st in the league also, however this makes a change because they usually do poor – although iv just changed there manager.

Now im not sure if it’s a bug but I only send my young non work-permit players to Brugge for 2 seasons, before offering them a new long contract. When I do that they usually pass for a work permit and therefore can go on loan elsewhere.

Blue Bruce – The England Job seems very difficult, for some crazy reason McClaren seems to always be very safe in his job and doesn’t even pick the best players. I.e. in mine there is Ashley Young & Bentley not in the squad, yet some Right winger worth £3.5m with inferior stats is in there!

Yeah Arzo is the spanish defender, think its Cesa Arzo or summet, not sure on the norweigan though.

Breno - Never signed him before but he's doing well.

Was suprised how cheap I got Saviet though.

The guy Eduardo I signed can play in many positions too - DL, WB, DC, DM - he is very useful as Warnock often has bad patches or gets suspended.

Bentley Deal was good - although he has since gone to Arsenal for £25m!!

You guys are talking about Cesar Arzo. Good player, I tried to sign him once, but wouldn't get into my first XI now.

My defence is about to be Fabiano (free) at left back (truly quality leftbacks are a problem, but this guy looks steady enough...the best ones that I really wanted cost a fortune so I'm keeping the powder dry to buy a world class one in future) or Sorin if that doesn't work out, with Warnock, Marcus Williams and Antunes as backups (I think I'm going to have to sell one or two of those), and some other, more turd-like players if something goes horribly wrong, that I'm expecting to just sell on for a profit. Zapata (free) and Onuoha (8m) in the centre with Marvin Angulo (13 mill..he can double as a good right winger though) at right back. Onuoha can also play RB, and then I've got Matias Cahais (6m) as a backup centre back, though he can also play at left back, and Nelsen and Samba to call on if needed (will probably sell one of them for major cash). I just wish I could get Cech for the goal, but hopefully by next year he'll love me due to being his national manager and I'll have finished above Chelsea, so he might want to come. I might have a lot of players, but I should be able to sell up for an absolute fortune when they've been contracted for a year, without screwing up my player loyalty stat. Hopefully. I've signed too many really, and am still looking at some kids and the possibility of Asamoah Gyan or Michael Johnson (both 20.5 million each). But i'll need a sale to fund that.

Anyways...I see you've not got Lulinha then. Sign him. He is capable of becoming THE BEST PLAYER in the game, that's reason enough, whatever he now costs.

On the subject of Breno, I eyed him for a long time mainly due to his wonderkid status, but my scouts have never said he was capable of that much. He was usually in the 8 mill bracket, think he went for about 6 though in the end, but I just didn't feel he was up to it, and his PA stat doesn't disprove me. Strange that the game says wonderkids can become world class if developed right, but when you look at the stats they can't. The Norweigan you're on about must be Nordveit. Watched him for a while but didn't go for it. Altidore would cost me about 5.5 million, so I'm waiting on a scout report. I know the Eduardo you're talking about, I very nearly went for him but after lengthy consideration left it be.

Likewise, I've often considered Vanden Borre (was offered me as a part exchange for 31 yr old Marco Casseti, along with cash, wish I'd taken it but he lacks a few stats big time, like concentration), Skrtel and Stokes. I'm confused why everybody seems to still have Santa Cruz. He was crap for me, injured half the time, has poor stats, and can be sold for a cool 6m plus.
