1864roverite Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 Whilst I'm not in the habit of agreeing with you, on this occasion I must. He appeared a man frustrated, he laboured the lack of resources point on many occasions. We desperately need some form of new investment, or the only way is down. JHC Your'e ILL !!

RoyRover Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 The consistent lack of funds for players is very frustrating for both the fans and obviously Mark Hughes. Hughes has done wonders with getting players for next to nothing and turning them into Premiership standard players. However you can only do this for so long. If the club is to move forward then it needs to invest in players. To get to the next level requires better players and they cost money. Obviously we are a relatively small club, that doesn't have the fan base of bigger teams, but I do wonder why every year we seem to be so limited on what we can spend on players. Do we just manage to get by, leaving enough money for one 'big' signing and another couple on the cheap? We clubs getting all that money from the Premiership television deal, I thought we would have been able to put more toward transfer funds.
Fife Rover Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 Even for oldies, Burnley games are hardly a regular occurence. Taking 1965 as when I started following Rovers in earnest, I think we have played them 17 times counting in Anglo-Scottish Cup ties. In the same time, we have played Bolton over 60 times- we even went down to the Third Division together in 1970 and won promotion together in 2001 so I don't think there is any other club we have played more frequently during my time supporting Rovers. It's got nothing to do with how often or otherwise we have played them. It has everything to do with the sheer intensity of hatred between SOME of our fans and SOME of theirs. For me it is the intensity of the rivalry, not hatred, but there is nowhere near the same intensity of feeling for me when we play Bolton or Preston or Blackpool. Not even on the same planet!! Metaphorically speaking I would crawl over broken glass to watch any clash between Rovers and Burnley at either venue.
Fife Rover Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 He wants £90k a week to go to Newcastle though! That's about 50 times what he is on at Arsenal at present.
gumboots Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 That's because you're an old style fan, Fife. People like me couldn't really care less about Burnley most of the time, although I love it when we beat them, but, being a Teessider by birth, I love it too when we put one over on Bolton, especially since the season when they kept trying to nick our automatic promotion place and we went and trounced them at the Reebok. I think it's one of the reasons the atmosphere is poor at Ewood too. Most of us just don't feel that anti-Burnley sentiment. Find some new songs that actually sing about now and not the past when Burnley were rivals and not an irrelevance and we'll probably sing more.
gumboots Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 That's about 50 times what he is on at Arsenal at present. Wouldn't you want loads of dosh to leave Arsenal and go to a club in turmoil like Newcastle? Especially if you were already an international and at a club where everyone speaks your language. I would.
thenodrog Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 If he gets us into europe for those 3 years or even helps win us a cup then the investment is well worthwhile. Should he then move on for £10-15m it's a worthwhile gamble, but that's what football is a gamble. He could get a career ending injury tomorrow or he could go on to be the most valuable football asset in the world. Personally even that scenario of Euro involvment or a cup win would not cover that particular investment imo. And as for gambling with large sums of money and by definition the clubs future existence lets ask the supporters of LUFC / Cov / Forest / Sheff Wed etc who all lost their gambles.
Mr. E Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 You know, if we have no money, then Hughes is just gonna have to toughen up the players he has. I know he can't make Ronaldo out of MGP, but a big part of being a manager at a no-funds club is adapting some tactic or some mentality to get more from the players. And it's not like they haven't shown that they can't be good.
mattjansen Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 Hughes has just stated that he will not bring anyone in before sundays game but hopefully in the coming weeks, no panic buying but he has some targets apparently. Hughes on rovers.co.uk
philipl Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 Rovers not in for Koumas OK Teamtalk but includes Hughes quotes.
den Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 Rovers not in for Koumas OK Teamtalk but includes Hughes quotes. He doesn't say he doesn't want him. He says we haven't bid for him.
RevidgeBlue Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 Rovers not in for Koumas OK Teamtalk but includes Hughes quotes. Not overly impressed by Koumas myself but was speaking to a pal who is a Wigan fan the other night and he couldn't speak highly enough of Koumas. Said it was like having Damien Duff only playing more centrally! He said he hoped we didn't go in for him.
92er Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 He said on Radio Lancs yesterday that there was someone he was interested in but it was a bit expensive at the moment.
RoyRover Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 Rovers not in for Koumas OK Teamtalk but includes Hughes quotes. Lets hope that is true. The reported £3.5 million he would cost is way too much for a player who has never lived up to the hype and if was as good as people say he was, then surely he would playing in the Premiership? When he has played in the top flight, he hasn't been anything special. We should look elsewhere IMO.
herbergeehh Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 Daniel van Buyten and Everton.. Central defence is not our problem, but I can't help thinking van Buyten is a world class defender..
tchocky Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 Leroy Lita could perhaps be a decent Roberts replacement. There's an interview with him on BBC stating his desire to leave. Still very young and with a lot of potential. However not sure why he never gets a chance for Reading... May be a bit of a gamble.
RoyRover Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 simic? He would solve our right back problem. A class act altogether.
Bing Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 Sidwell is apparently on his way to Sunderland on loan.

neekoy Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Sunderland finalise Sidwell deal Read the story under that one, thankgod for sports journo's and the attention to detail
daveoftherovers Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Blackburn are ready to snap up Amdy Faye from Rangers as a replacement for Robbie Savage. (The Mirror)
RoyRover Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 I would have said yes a few years ago to Faye when he as at Portsmouth and he was one of the best defensive midfielders going. But now he doesn't even get on for Rangers. Not exactly awe inspiring.
