:rover: not intrested what lotnob are doing,i wonder why rovers have not approached the saudi's who were intrested in buying liverpoo.£50 million investment in players should make us as good as them :brfcsmilie:

I think comparing us to Bolton is a good idea. We have similar attendaces - and it theory the two clubs should be in a very similar financial position. They're a good team to compare how we're doing financially against.

"A child born in Mill Hill will live on average 10 years less than a child born in Tockholes, "

I heard that this morning from that new Liberal leader (whose name I cannot be bothered to check out). But he used two areas of Sheffield. Must be a currently fashionable political soundbite.

Anyway I presume now that the kids of Mill Hill are all going to live 10 years longer thanks to this new gym. So if the kids from Tockholes use it too then there will still be a 10 year gap?

With all the recession-talk and todays highly volatile capital market we could hope that the financial men/trust behind Rovers would shift some of their assets away from equity and in football players, rather then these boring double A rated bonds... :xmas:

Does anyone else think same as I do that this crazy spiral in transfer fees and wages will eventually sicken off so many people connected with the game that common sense will reign once again? It may take a while yet but I feel sure it will come when even the super rich clubs and their owners and fans will say enough is enough. Hopefully then a realistic level of fees and wages will apply and as long as Rovers are still in there hanging on and the Walker Trust is still our owner, then we should be able to compete again. Roll on!!

Yes to the first bit, No to the second.

Only those who can't afford to get in the stadium, until the clubs run out of punters not a chance. When did you ever see a rich man who did not want to get even richer? If I had 1% of the money these men have I'd stop working NOW!

I truely hope this will happen but reality says it will ONLY happen if the TV money dries up..........and I don't think that will happen in the near future, or even my lifetime. TV and football are now so heavily dependent on each other that the chances of this revenue drying up are very remote. No TV money would result in the complete collapse of the English game as we know it today. But without footie Sky would not be the pervasive success that it clearly is.

A euro super league "depriving" us of the big 4 clubs would be the only feasible way that Rovers could become a serious player in the English league (by means of the trust fund) . I honestly believe this would be beneficial to the game as a whole . I reckon my patience will last only another couple of seasons with the game at present .

The next Sky/media deal is to be negotiated eighteen months from now. Quite how that will look with a recession squeezing viewing habits and the inexorable march of technology remains to be seen.

Reasons to think the gravy train might continue: new entrants to the broadcsat market know if you are going to get big you have to have the Premiership. Plus the next deal will include a commitment by every one of the 20 EPL clubs to play one international match outside the UK each season as directed by the Premier League.

On the other hand, there are signs the money coming into the EPL from foreign owners has already dried up. West Ham, Man City, Liverpool could have been expected to be going bonkers with transfer fees and wages this window but are very publicly not doing so. If Man U and/or Liverpool are in deep icky stick over rolling their loans the fall out will be massive- I don't think they are but thet are certainly sweating.

Also, having looked up the profitability of NHL, NBA and especially NFL franchises, there are some mighty handsome returns there. At some point the overseas investors are going to be looking for their dividends and when you see most NFL franchises making 20 to 30% profits, perhaps that is in their business plans for the UK as well.

Clubs having 25% of turnover dividended off to the overseas owner would certainly level the playing field for Rovers/Walker Trustees. Hicks is already talking about redirecting money from Liverpool into his US franchises.

It'll never happen. I'm suprised the yanks ever thought that they could make money out of the Prem cos no buggger else ever has (unless they have sold out to foreigners Edwards / Bates etc) and plenty of wealthy men have tried. My feeling is that they will cut their losses and head for the hills.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well the January transfer window has been a total damp squib hasn't it ?

Our need for reinforcements in the squad is plain for most people to see. The central midfield is distinctly threadbare, especially after the departure of Savage.

We have a left-sided midfielder in MGP who is woefully out of form and hasn't managed a Premiership goal in 30 odd games. I think it's a sad indictment of the lack of funding at our club when we have to persist with a player like Pedersen, who has been so totally out of sorts this season.

Graeme Souness once said: "We have to wee with the willy we've got" - and it appears, sadly, as if we don't have a pot to have a pee in.

Mark Hughes has spoken of his frustration at the situation. As he said earlier this month: "Sometimes when you know there are weaknesses in the team that need strengthening, there is frustration when you can't address that immediately. That's to do with resources."

(Link to those quotes HERE)

The big question is will Hughes eventually get so frustrated with a lack of funding in the transfer market, that he'll eventually want to move away when a bigger club next has a vacancy?

Our club could certainly go downhill fast if Hughes left and the wrong man replaced him. Relegation, under a poor manager, would be the death knell for the club.

Surely Rovers should be doing everything possible to try to keep Hughes happy. I think the lack of funding from the board/trustees is a big slap in the face for our manager.

Let's just face it, none of Rovers' targets came available and the club decided against signing a numbers maker-upper. This time round, the triallists didn't work out.

Tempus fugit for Savage so we cashed in.

We are living on a wing and a prayer in midfield and defence at the moment looking at the injury, suspension and Australian squad lists.

But it will still be a very decent looking first team that will take to the pitch against Everton on Saturday.

A bit of an embarrassment really. We plainly need to strengthen the midfield but a severe lack of ambition and money means we'll have to stick with what we've got. In allowing one player to leave and making provision for no replacement, the board has seriously undermined Hughes. One wonders where the millions generated by being in the Premiership all these years (we are actually playing in that league, in spite of some fans' views that we are a championship team who just happen to be lining up against Liverpool, Arsenal and United twice a season) actually goes. That funding cannot be found to recruit at least one body on loan is both an embarrassment and a concern.

Cant say i disagree with anything in that post.

To put Rovers lack of apparant funding into context:

The Whelan fee brings Stoke's total spending this January to almost £5m
