[Archived] Ufc On Setanta

Recommended Posts

The UFC line-up in Newcastle tomorrow looks like a good one. BJ Penn against Joe Stevenson is the obvious standout, and it'll be good to see what Gabriel Gonzaga can do when he's not getting his nose splattered all over his face by Randy Couture.

Thing is, I don't have Setanta so I'll never be able to watch it. I bought Setanta specifically for the UFC last time it was England, and it was a total rip-off - £10 for a month's subscription, plus £10 "connection fee" plus an extra month when I tried to unsubscribe a week later, because they need a full month's notice, plus another month after that when I forgot to call on the next magic unsubscription day.

That one event cost me £40.

I don't have a Windows PC either, so I can't watch it on the UFC website. Anyone know of any other places to see the broadcast?

Keep an eye on this thread over the coming days mate -

I'm sure you'll find a stream on there before Saturday night.

As far as the event goes, BJ Penn should have no problem. I'm looking forward more to getting this one out of the way and moving on to Lesnar's debut at UFC 81.

Cheers for the link!

I agree, 81 has the bigger match-ups. Frank Mir seems to have lost it, so I suppose Lesnar has a fair chance. Hope Tim Sylvia actually tries to fight instead of going for three rounds of boredom, though.

What a great event. 3 sick KO's to start off, fantastic main event and some great match ups in between. I'm a big boxing fan but when it comes to pure entertainment from top to bottom on a card boxing does not get close to MMA. The UFC rarely disappoints.

Just reading about it on the UFC site - sounds great! The p2p TV stuff seems to work on PC only, but I'm sure I'll be able to find a downloadable version soon enough. Bring on Lesnar in a couple of weeks, and a happy farewell to Setanta, at least until the next time the UFC comes to the UK.

Come on, Sky, pick this stuff up for PPV.

The 2 english guys fighting on tonights bill did the uk proud. The 1st minute was a toe-to-toe street brawl of Darwen St Saturday night proportions. I watched until 9.45pm & enjoyed every minute of it :tu:

UFC rules!

I'm sorry to have to break this to you mate, but Setanta have actually struck a deal with the UFC to show all UFC programming in the UK (including US PPV's) exclusively on Setanta Sports 1.

You'd be best off just getting the package and being done with it!

So there's not even going to be any on Bravo the next day now? That's terrible. I hate Setanta for ripping me off last time and I really don't want to fork out any cash for their sub-standard coverage, crappy news channel and Steve Bloody McManaman.

Man, if I ever see Des Lynam in the streets I'll rip his tache off and make him eat it.

Don`t know what tv set-up you have, but i`ve got virgin media (the old NTL)

Because of Virgin`s squabble with SKY, (SKY withdrew some of it`s free channels) Virgin gave it`s customers free Setanta sports 1 & 2, Setanta sports news & other crap like Celtic & Rangers tv......which is always good for a laugh

We just got Setanta over here on our pay TV network. It was always available in pubs and clubs. I'm going to get rid of it. All they ever show is Man Utd TV, Chelsea TV etc. They gave a big spiel about Serie A, German and French football being available on it, but thet are hardly on!

Setanta is worth £10 a month just for the boxing.

UFC has completely ruined boxing for me, and Setanta doesn't always have the biggest names. Even an average UFC fight has more action than the best boxing match, especially in an era where the heavyweight champ is some unknown Russian and the few decent fighters are lucky to get an outing maybe once a year.

I wish I didn't have to pay the licence fee as well - I never even watch the BBC. I can't miss out on the UFC, but this is going to make my monthly TV an even more significant expense.

Did I mention how much I hate Setanta for this?

I think you did, yeah :D

For me Boxing is about the big fight atmosphere, and Setanta have had enough fights in the last 6 - 9 months that I'd happily have paid Sky Box Office £15 for - Calzaghe/Kessler, Hatton/Castillo, Pacqiauo/Barrera, Trinidad/Jones, Moseley/Cotto, and with Macca/Haye and Calzaghe/Hopkins to come, I can't complain.

Add to that SPL and Premier League football and UFC and it's well worth the money.

Here's confirmation from the Setanta website on the UFC news.

http://www.setanta.com/en/UK/Our-Sports/UFC/

I watched 'Wired' last night - nice little show with a couple of classic fights featured.

I totally totally agree. Some of these big (& basically fat overweight) heavyweight boxers are a joke & wouldn`t last 2mins in the octagon.

Boxing has been ruined with corruption & Don King style mafia dealings. If you want to see good boxing these days, you`ve got to look at the lighter weights.....where-as UFC is explosive in every weight.

UFC is explosive in every weight.

And now some big bully has come along and told me I can't watch it anymore unless I pay him. I feel like a kid who's had his dinner money stolen again.

Has anyone tried streaming video from the UFC website? If that works well, I might consider getting myself a cheap laptop PC and do it that way.

I watched UFC81 on Bravo tonight. Again some good bouts & the emergence of WWE wrestling superstar Brock Lesnar as a UFC fighter. Unfortunately, it didn`t go well for Brock. He started off well & hurt the smaller but highly talented Brazilian Jujitsu expert Frank Mir with a flurry of blows to the head, but Mir showed his class by reeling Lesnar in & getting him in a leg-lock. Lesnar hadn`t a chance & tapped out almost immediately. it was all over in the 1st round..... A lesson well & truly dished out.

Lesnar was gracious in defeat & admitted he got caught, but said he`d give UFC another go.

Mir was quality & it goes to show it aint how big you are, it`s how good you are.

I also enjoyed it Cletus, another card full of good fights.

The Lesnar thing was unbelievable, he clearly had zero BJJ, how his camp let him go in against Frank Mir without working on that amazes me. He was totally wreckless as was showed by Mazzagatti rightly feeling justified in taking a point off for hitting the back of the head without a prior warning. He tried to fight Mir as if he was fighting the guy in the link a bit further up. It's almost as if he did no research on him, he deserved to be submitted.

He definitely has a future in the UFC, he showed enough power in the ease he took Mir down to prove he's got something. I'd like to see him fight Sylvia next, a guy who likes to keep it standing, will be interesting to see if Lesnar can shoot on him.

Can't wait for UFC 82 - Anderson Silva is a monster.

School boy error for Lesner. He looked very pumped up before the fight and really went for him. At one point I thought the ref might have considered stepping in if the blows to the head continued but Mir showed his quality and as Celtus mentioned, Brock took the bait and tapped out seconds after.

I heard a story about how Kurt Angle did a similar thing when Brock Lesnar got a little bit mouthy back when he was a WWE rookie. I've never been convinced about Lesnar's shooting ability and doubted how well he would do in a UFC environment. I didn't see the fight, but the result doesn't surprise me.

Everyone is going to want to fight Lesner after that performance.

I find that hard to believe - Lesnar looked fantastic until his naievity got the better of him. Lets not forget Mir is a former HW champion, and a good one at that. The loss was great for UFC, Lesnar still looks strong and people will pay to see him again, whereas Mir is now a potential star once more in the HW division that strengthens their bargaining power with Couture.

Apparently Lesnar will be on the bill when UFC 85 comes to the UK in June this year. Not word on who he will fight yet, but I'd imagine Dana White and Joe Silva will be looking to feed him a striker/wrestler that more suits his style.

I don't know if this is aired over seas, but there's a feeder system/less famous MMA league called WEC that is aired on a channel called VS(Versus) over here. I rate it very highly, great fights all the time, men jjust trying to go and earn a name for themselves and get snapped up by Pride or UFC.
