Ok - on age alone you'd take Reina over James, Brad and Van Der Saar. There's no way Robinson is better than Reina. Given is a similar keeper without the penalty saving attributes. Likewise Cuducini and Jaskelainen. Craig Gordon has potential to be just as good but he's only just arrived in the Prem, he'll need to put a few good seasons behind him before he's achieved what Reina has.

I'll give you Cech.

If you look at Liverpool's defensive record since they've had Reina, it's phenomenal. Didn't he have something ridiculous like 18 - 20 clean sheets a couple of seasons back?

What? Based on what? Not even in the top 5 in the Prem imo.

Just off the top of my head, I'd take any of Friedel, James, Robinson, Jaaskelinan, Given, Cech, Cudicini, Gordon, Van Der Saar over Reina any day.

Robinson has to one of the worst keepers in the prem, is he rated by you because he is English?? Reina is as good or better then Cech,Friedel,Given and James.

To me one of the main criteria of a 'quality' goalkeeper is that he never makes mistakes - like our Brad.

Brad doesn't make glaring mistakes but lets some soft goals in. Like the Arsenal one at ewood.

Cech made a massive mistake against Villa at Stamford Bridge.

Can't think of many keepers this season that haven't made an error or several in some cases.

It's funny how often things have to be black or white on here. Reina is not one of the elite keepers in the premier league in my opinion. Neither is he 'awful'. He's a decent premier league keeper.

On current form I wouldn't swap Friedel for Reina as I believe Friedel is the better keeper. I know what T4E means about age but with regards to whose best that is irrelevant.

Reina is definatley not in the top 5 keepers in the world. Id say in the Prem Cech, James & Friedel are all better and more consistent.

Jussi @ Bolton, Given, Gordon & Carson are all about level with Reina. Reina only looks good because he has a failry solid defence in front of him

It is indeed a factor, but it's not as straight as just looking at # of mistakes. For example, Reina (And many other keepers) will come for a lot more crosses than Brad will, as Brad prefers staying on his line. This means that Reina will go for crosses that are harder to get than most Brad goes for. He'll get most of them, but look like a clown on occasion too. To assign some numbers to it: Let's say Reina comes for all crosses of type X, and Brad comes for none. 80% of the time Reina will get the ball, 20% of the time it'll be an easy goal when he misses it. Brad won't look like a clown for missing any of the crosses, but on the other hand him not claiming them means that the oppoeition will get plenty of good chances, with the end result that they'll score from 30% of them, but also giving Brad opportunities to do what he does best; make ridiculous reflex saves.

So Brad will come out looking better, but concede more. Now I'm not saying this is how it is; the numbers are purely made up of course, but it's worth keeping in mind that Brad doesn't put himself in positions to make mistakes; and that's something that does have a downside as well. I used Reina to represent that type of keeper here, I've not watched him enough to be able to properly compare him to Brad.

Now if we're talking in terms of not making mistakes like letting the ball slip underneath you and so on, then I definitely agree with you, and in that aspect Brad is one of the best as he hardly makes any.

Given has lost it recently. Making more and more mistakes and having injury after injury.

James is quality but still has his moments on lunacy.

After watching Given at Ewood this season he looked like a man who's playing career is beginning to go downhill, he doesnt look as good as he has done in the past.

He doesnt cover the goals convincingly before he could pull off saves that were going in the top corner now he just doesnt seem capable of doing it anymore.

Have injuries and age taken there toll on Shay Given.

Rev hasn't seen any shades of grey for some time. We're crap, Reina's drap. Can't remember who's brilliant right now though.

The injuries have definately been having an effect of late, but the main problem is having 10 crap players on the field with him week in week out :)

Shay's still a legend, but should have left the North East 2 years ago.

Shay Given is a player that should never have been allowed to leave Blackburn. IMO his transfer is one of the biggest balls up at Ewood Park, in fact it is probably the BIGGEST balls up ever.

Why we never sold Flowers instead is something that I will never understand.

I have had some interesting chats with Shay over the years in particular a very good one in Ibiza 2 years ago when he was with Dominic Matteo at his mothers villa. They lived next door to my wifes auntie (rip). He was never looking to leave Blackburn and thought that Flowers would leave giving him the chance to sign the contract that was on offer. When it all changed at the top, he was sold off without any further conversations taking place.

yeah, we've really struggled for goalkeepers since...

We were lucky to get Brad. There aren't many keepers that would save us as many points as he does. Given would have done the job without having to look around and would be worth a proper wedge of cash.

To be fair you're absolutely right, the age thing is not relevant to who's best. I was more coming from who I'd rather have with that comment.

I did a bit of reading up on Reina earlier. He won the PL Golden Gloves in 2005-06 with 20 clean sheets. He won the same award in 2006-07 with 19 clean sheets. He holds records for Liverpool for most clean sheets kept in 50 appearances (29) and fewest games to amass 50 clean sheets (92). Both records were previously held by Ray Clemence. All of these point to Reina keeping a clean sheet every other game AT WORST. Thats an absolutely ridiculous record.

It's easy to say that he has a good defence in front of him, but it's mostly the same defence that played with Dudek. Chelsea's defence is just as good, and Cech doesn't have as impressive a record. I don't even know his penalty saving stats, but I know they're also quite astounding.

I wonder what the summer will bring.

I feel it could make or break us [/on-topic]

I fear it will see us drift further off the pace, with one or two cheap arrivals and no major changes unless we lose one of our current 'stars'. We're relying on other teams to slip up and go backwards in my opinion.

Anything to report Nicko on the reports that Rovers handed Quinton Fortune a trial whilst in Florida?

This was reported last week - I think it was Roy Keane who revealed he would be training with us. I was speaking to a United fan about Fortune last night. He said he quite liked him - very skilfull he said. I think he'd be a good addition to our squad. Certainly better competition at left-back and left-wing than Berner. He can also play in central midfield too.

I understand he's been over with the squad, so they must be taking him seriously. The only snag is that he has not played this season and didn't do much in his time at Bolton.

A pretty big snag, I would have thought.

But if he is fit enough to fill the Sav vacancy until summer then I can see the sense in it.
