JAL Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Which is why no-one was surprised that Fortune was on the 'elite' few amongst the Man U players who had Roy Keane's mobile number and consider him a friend. Fortune is very skilful but clearly he's lost his way these days. I expect this deal to go through because I suspect Hughes has realised that Berner isn't very good and is worried somewhat. If Fortune ends up aa a straight swap for Berner then i can accept it, anything else well its the sort of signing that Burnley would make. Cant say i'm impressed with any South African players in general they are all lightweights just making up the numbers and all of a suddden we could end up having three on the books-oh dear!

joey_big_nose Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 According to soccerbase, Fortune has only made about 150 senior appearances in his entire career (inc internationals caps). That surely can't be right? Thats not that suprising. Hardly played in 18 months, and when he was at Man Utd he was behind Giggs. Not too many chances and injury prone.

[/quoteI would take Fortune, give him a shot. We have taken a lot of players who on paper should be utterly out of their depth- Nelsen, Samba, Derbyshire - and turned them into decent players. I would back Hughes with Fortune. To be honest we just need him to provide cover and a bit of impetus to Pedersen.
Backroom trueblue Posted February 22, 2008 Backroom Posted February 22, 2008 To be honest we just need him to provide cover and a bit of impetus to Pedersen. Bit of an expensive (his wages) carrot for Pedersen ... surely a swift kick up the arse would be cheaper

A nice bit of bigotry there Mokoena a lightweight?
JAL Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 To be honest we just need him to provide cover and a bit of impetus to Pedersen. Do you not think we really need someone who is younger fitter and generally better than a 'has been' in Fortune. The three you mention were all new to the premier league but this one isnt, hes featured very little with all three clubs hes been at. The evidence is'nt good on Fortune, of his previous three clubs hes hardly ever played regularly the evidence is there plain to see to back up..he isnt up to it.
JAL Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 A nice bit of bigotry there Mokoena a lightweight? What does he bring to the table? Does he have a good engine? Does he have two feet? Is he good in the air?
Trickstar Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 What does he bring to the table? Does he have a good engine? Does he have two feet? Is he good in the air? Do we have another option?????
BuckyRover Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 What does he bring to the table? Does he have a good engine? Does he have two feet? Is he good in the air? Can he tackle? Can he break up attacks? Do we win when he plays?
speeeeeeedie Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 thats not saying much is it? Surely its time to shut this tedious thread down!? everytime I look it makes me want to throw up! failing thread closure I think I will open up a caravan on kidder street and read palms! heres a prediction ........... lots of players wont be joining rovers! do i get a prize? pls get a life and a brain! This, i'm affraid, demonstrates that we are no longer credible players in the tranfer market. Fortune has been bombed out at Bolton and I'm gutted that this is now the type of player we are looking at. The Walker trust's betrayal of Jack's legacy leaves Mark Hughes having to plat fog merely to keep us in the top flight and you wouldn't blame him and his coaching team for slinging their hook at the next opportunity. Are you two OK? I'd hate to be near either of you if something bad does happen. Talk about pessimism. Last January we signed Holland international André Ooijer. Last summer we signed Paraguay international Roque Santa Cruz. Unfortunately, in today's inflated market, we didn't manage to sign any of our targets in the January window. I don't think that demonstrates anything other than our unwillingness to pay over the odds for mediocre players. The little money we have needs to be spent wisely and on the right type of players....Quinton Fortune could do a job until the end of the season and is a versatile player, I fail to see how it can be a negative thing to let him have a trial at the club. Good reply. Were not a club who is interested in paying silly money for mediocre players.
JAL Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Can he tackle? Can he break up attacks? Do we win when he plays? Save the money and spend it on the club shop
b12_simon Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Surely its time to shut this tedious thread down!? everytime I look it makes me want to throw up! I'd stop reading it in that case. Meanwhile plenty of other people find this thread interesting and informative so why not shut your whining?

My point is Mark Hughes knows a lot more about football than you do... He is coming in to do a job, not walz into the first team. We cannot make normal signings now as the window is closed
PAFELL Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Save the money and spend it on the club shop It is really amazing how negative people on this board are. How many of us when Oojer made his debut were embarrassed with his performance against Chelsea - and thought oh help. How many of us said 'who, never heard of them' etc when Hughes bought Samba and Nelson - yet we are not complaigning now. As we know full well that Rovers got some good signings in all three of them - Oojer, Samba, Nelson. Even the signing of Savage, initially got booed - yet!!!! Instead of the negative posts on here should we not be supporting the manager, the club - who are doing, in my view, the best they can with the resources available. Often there are comments about the money situation at Rovers - yet it is the current supporters who can do something about it. If each individual took just one friend along to the game who has never been to a football game before (even if it meant you paying for the ticket for them), the attendance would double. The friend who was taken may get the football bug and return, after all we all know going to a live game is a lot better than watching on telly. This would then help improve the money situation at the club for them to compete in the transfer market etc.
LeftWinger Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Often there are comments about the money situation at Rovers - yet it is the current supporters who can do something about it. If each individual took just one friend along to the game who has never been to a football game before (even if it meant you paying for the ticket for them), the attendance would double. So instead of getting about 22,000 fans in against Bolton - the attendance would be 44,000.

waggy Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 fortune would cost just that, forget him we have enough journeymen
LeftWinger Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 fortune would cost just that, forget him we have enough journeymen Fortune is a better left-back than Berner, he is also a better left-midfielder than Berner and could do a job in central midfield. I'd snap him up.

USRoverME Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 I love how far the train has left the station before the passengers have boarded. We have him in to train with the team right? Why are people talking like we've wasted money on him already and that this signifies that we are doomed for all eternity to a fate worse that constantly watching Grabbi highlight videos? How many trialists have we taken on since Hughes took over, and how many did we sign? Why would you think Fortune would get any different treatment? Its a closed window, the pickings are slim, but we all agree that a bit of midfield help would be welcome. We aren't going to find the next Tugay as a free agent. So, the club decided to bring Fortune in to poke the tires and see if he can do a job. Big deal. Also, what job will he do? We don't know, only Hughes does. Maybe we have him in on trial for water boy? And I highly doubt someone like Fortune will cost any significant amount of money. They guy is out of football, I'm guessing it wouldn't take much to sign him. Heck, by making his name relevant to the sport again, you've paid him a lot already.
Manc Rover Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 fortune would cost just that, forget him we have enough journeymen We have enough journeymen? I can't think of one single Rovers player that you would class as a journeyman! Besides, he's a trialist and would be a good back up seeing as the window is hut.

G Somerset Rover Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Well Henchoz and Berner fit the journeyman steroetype quite well... At least in Berner we have someone who gives hope to the watching kids that they can make it. How did this guy get through his 'trial' at the club?
modes98 Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 At least in Berner we have someone who gives hope to the watching kids that they can make it. How did this guy get through his 'trial' at the club? I don't think he had one as he was playing for FC Basel. I think Hughes was impressed whilst watching him for them. To be fair to the guy he hasn't exactly had a lot of first team action. He is pretty bad though.
