Would make a nice addition.

Chelsea won't be selling him, but they are happy to see him go on loan. He could make a difference for someone in the promotion race this season...shame it looks like being Charlton. I could think of a better home for him. ;)

Mike Rigg. This is a reasonable background piece on the chap.

Thanks, I'd missed that appointment.

So, if I'm reading it right, he's Welsh (obviously), very young for a chief scout (does he have a good network?) and this is his first scouting appointment (no previous form for what is a key appointment at a top 10 club)

Not inspiring on the face of it. Let's hope the summer activity justifies his appointment

That's a bit unfair on the guy. He was probably part-responsible for the Nelsen and Samba recruitment.

I read that we knew nothing about Samba before he came on trial, then it was one of the coaches who first saw how damn good he was. So, unlikely on that count.

To be fair the chief scout must have been open to the idea - and set it up in the first place - and then it's up to the staff to decide if he is worth signing.

But also to be fair the agent who did the deal must take a lot of credit for bringing an unknown player to the right club.

OK, it was a shot in the dark and probably a very lucky break, but I wouldn't fault someone for being part of that process.

Sheffield Wednesday takeover is imminent - as might have been mentioned.

It will be very interesting to see who Geoff Sheard's money men are...and how cklose they came to Rovers. I believe it is the 'Asian' group who caused something of a storm on another late, lamented thread.

Don't think anyone was trying to fault him for the Samba deal...I'm just not convinced he deserves any real credit for it.

A lot of clubs and/or chief scouts would have slammed the door on that one or just ignored the idea. So he does deserve credit for running with the idea.

Some of the best transfers have happened by accident...

Well, I can't speak for how the chain of command works at Ewood, obviously. But I know Hughes likes to see players up close in trials, so I would expect his role to have been more important even in the initial stages.

On this one, which I followed pretty closely at the time.

The agent put the player in, Rovers scouts tried to watch him but couldn't. So the agent brings him over in the hope of a deal and the management liked him. So, the chief scout has played a part in that one...

How? They tried to watch him and couldn't. Surely his role was just to say 'we know nothing about him, just this geezer recommends him, you might want to take a closer look boss'. I could do that.

How!!! Nicko you must be pulling our leg.............In 2 years he has done nothing and found nothing...The only credit he can take for all his "carbon footprint output" is Maceo Rigters!!!!!....I know he was heavily scouted before they signed him and was one of a few who was not given a trial before signing.........Alas..............The scouts have been chasing shadows on a cloudy day.

Yes, but he identified him as a player worth considering. He's obviously used his contacts.

As for the drying-up of late I think that's probably because there is not enough money to spend. There has been no shortage of trialists - of mixed quality - but no signings to speak of.

And when it comes to the kids the point may be that a new strategy has to be thought of.

Why not install a coach to run the youth team but with a specific remit to take them all the way through to the seniors. If that means the coach goes with them, then better still.

It sometimes works at international level and might be worth considering at club level.

If players were put in a 'team' environment at a young age and encouraged to come through there might be a lot less of the wastage going on...and not just at Rovers.

I know several academies are currently looking at the failure to find new and young talent.

It's a question of finding a coach who can work with a group and then take them to the reserves and then the first team.

By the way, am I get paid for this? ;)

Scouting cant be that Good Nicko if it means that they have to pick up future stars from Town centers doing Monkey tricks!!!!

What if the coach has "Favorites" and he keeps pushing these few and ignores the rest.........You`ll have No players left by the end of the 2nd year!!!!!!!!...................

The Academy staff have no one to answer to and that is the problem.......Mr Williams is too busy trying to get the wage % below 85%.............Academy wise we need a new direction Minus Downes and his Yes Men.......................

There's a big Burnley story about to break...I will assume a round of gags is about to start.

For reasons that will become obvious that is the one and only thing I'm going to say on the subject

Let me get in there first.

Either a burnley star has been found hiding in a wardrobe by an angry husband

or

a member of managements wife has been set on fire by a burnley loyalist.

other than that

Owen Coyle must have resigned or been sacked

they are totally skint as Mr flood has no cash

or

they are about to be sponsored by Emmerdale Farm.

I must be close with at least one of those.
