stuwilky Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 Surely then it would go to the runners up. Not sure though - it is very confusing. Then what happens if Everton finish 4th and Liverpool win the Champions League? Liverpool qualify for the Champions League and Everton the UEFA? Yes.

tony gale's mic Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 Basically if West Brom beat Portsmouth I think it could potentially be game on again as far as that extra European slot is concerned although it needs West Brom to stay in the Championship. Much stranger things have happened this season....
Head Rover Heels Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 it needs West Brom to stay in the Championship. Aha - Now that's what i was wondering about. I know lower division teams have qualified before, but is it now the case that a lower league club can't qualify as runner up? I vaguely remember something about it, but can't for the life of me remember the details.
ftry Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 There's nothing in the rules that says you have to be in the top division to qualify.
OJRovers Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 So if Cardiff win, and West Brom runners up...does that mean it goes to the prem league 7th (!) We need some definative rules here.
nicko Posted March 11, 2008 Author Posted March 11, 2008 Just spoken to the FA. The FA Cup winners go into the UEFA Cup - unless it's Cardiff. Barnsley and West Brom can qualify. If Cardiff win the FA Cup, then the runners-up miss out. So, you basically want to become Cardiff fans for a while. There is a potential extra place in the UEFA Cup - if an English team wins the UEFA Cup...and that's official.

nicko Posted March 11, 2008 Author Posted March 11, 2008 So Portsmouth would not qualify if they were runners-up to Cardiff? No. There is no place for a runner-up unless they lost to a team that was in the top four of the Premier League... By the way, there could be a Fair Play place too. That table makes incredible reading. As it stands Man U are top. Spurs, Liverpool, Arsenal and then Everton come next. So there's every chance that Manchester City would be the English side to benefit. They score heavily for respect towards officials...which shows that old Sven obviously does not just charm the ladies.

nicko Posted March 11, 2008 Author Posted March 11, 2008 That list makes me wanna throw up Feel free to have a barf... http://www.premierleague.com/page/FairPlay...,,12306,00.html The Rovers marks for behaviour of officials is quite remarkable. I wouldn't have said old Sparky was the worst manager around for that...Eriksson on level marks with Roy Keane if you like a bit of irony.
Hughesy Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 Behaviour of Officials is lowest for us - does that mean we get the sh1t referee performances??
nicko Posted March 11, 2008 Author Posted March 11, 2008 Interesting to note a few of the stats in this. Only Chelsea have more bookings than Rovers. Rovers rated 7th in 'positive play' section. But the 'behaviour of officials' is way below anyone else's and a stunning 26 points worse than Fulham's. I'm sure Lawrie Sanchez moaned more than anyone when he was in charge.

Oh the irony - So quite simply Enkleman could make the most important impact on our season. You couldn't make this stuff up
Hughesy Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 I like the fact that we show the least respect for our opponents. No one likes us, we dont care.
Paul Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 Cardiff can't qualify for Europe as an English entrant as they belong to the FA of Wales... So how does it work for Monaco? Do they belong to the FA of France?
thenodrog Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 That table isn't even worth a passing glance to somebody who has played football rather than done a Stats course at nightschool. I can think of few teams that play the game fairer than BRFC. Even with just Bentley and Tugay guilty of the occasional dive we have no players who stay down play acting and feigning injury simply to get opponents cautioned or sent off.

I can think of few teams that play the game fairer than BRFC. Even with just Bentley and Tugay guilty of the occasional dive we have no players who stay down play acting and feigning injury simply to get opponents cautioned or sent off. We're too honest if anything, though we're clearly still living off the 'bully boy's' tag - just look at the bookings in the Fulham game. Speaking of which, there was a moment in said game where they were breaking away and had us at a disadvantage numbers wise. Pedersen had an opportunity to bring the player carrying the ball down, but instead tried to get in a position for a fair tackle. I commented that L'Arse, Man Utd, Pompey etc wouldn't think twice about cynically bringing that player down. We play the game hard, but fair. I just find officials laughable these days, especially in connection with Rovers.
modes98 Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 especially in connection with Rovers. and poor Morten. The man wouldn't hurt a fly and yet he's been booked twice for being on the end of violent conduct. Does anyone know what suspended fine, etc we have hanging over our heads for the last few years fair play performances?
nicko Posted March 11, 2008 Author Posted March 11, 2008 Just a thought...but if Spurs win the UEFA Cup that would mean an extra place for a well-placed club to make it from the Premier League. It's a big 'if' mind you.
RibbleValleyRover Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 Does anyone know what suspended fine, etc we have hanging over our heads for the last few years fair play performances? Blackburn: Fined £100,000 (including £70,000 suspended from 2005/06), with a further fine of £50,000 in place for the 2007/08 season. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/6960060.stm

I had this feeling that there may have been a warning about an even bigger fine and potentially looking at further punishment in the future. Nicko re spurs you said earlier There is a potential extra place in the UEFA Cup - if an English team wins the UEFA Cup...and that's official. I would assume that if Everton or Spurs won the Uefa Cup then an extra spot would be allocated down the football league tree to 6th place. Meaning 7th was intertoto.

Meaning 7th was intertoto. Unless Spurs/Everton win the UEFA Cup AND Cardiff win the FA Cup - which would mean 7th would be UEFA spot and 8th Intertoto?
nicko Posted March 11, 2008 Author Posted March 11, 2008 Nicko re spurs you said earlier I would assume that if Everton or Spurs won the Uefa Cup then an extra spot would be allocated down the football league tree to 6th place. Meaning 7th was intertoto. If Everton or Spurs win the UEFA Cup the fifth AND sixth teams would be in the competition. I suppose if Everton are fifth or sixth that also opens it up to the seventh team. The team in eighth would go into the Inter Toto. It would be a bit more exciting if it didn't look as though both would go out in midweek. If Everton win the UEFA Cup and finish in the top four...well, that's another question.
nicko Posted March 11, 2008 Author Posted March 11, 2008 To recap, as it stands: Champions League...Arsenal, Man U, Chelsea and Liverpool. UEFA Cup...Tottenham, Portsmouth/Barnsley/West Brom, Everton. If Spurs or Everton win the UEFA Cup, then sixth place goes in. If Cardiff win the FA Cup, then there's an extra place. So seventh place could go in. InterToto...next. Fair Play...currently Man City. So there is still plenty of chance of Europe - but you would have to finish above Man City and probably Portsmouth - and then hope.
