Just spoken to a reasonably-informed chairman of a club...who says:

Cardiff may have a case  and that the Championship sides may not be allowed in by UEFA unless they meet certain requirements. So the FA Cup entrant for Europe is going to be the hottest of hot subjects.

I think I'm going to give up on this topic right now...

Sounds like unless Pompey win the Cup some club will take it to court.

Cardiff were aware of the rule at the start of the season and it should be enforced. Could the Welsh FA put them forward as one of their teams?

The FA line on that was 'we'll see you in court' if Ridsdale challenges it...but he may have allies, so that would get legal and be messy.

Link, He must be getting used to this court lark by now!

The FA should make the situation clear and then get all clubs entering the cup to agree to the terms. I do agree it's harsh if you make it to the final and are then told you can't go to into Europe but rules are there for a reason, the fact the FA only apply them when it suits then is a different matter.

Being selfish, 6th means Intertoto and anything else seems extremely unlikely. Pompey and Villa play easy home matches as their games in hand tonight.

I fancy Boro for a shock win tonight. It won't happen but it would be great for us. Pompey have a far harder task beating Brum as they can't score goals at the moment.

You'll be pleased to see this from the local paper:

Chairman John Williams's quote on the FA rap nonsense..."We are disappointed with the decision and we will be contesting it vigorously."

Spot On Mr Williams

As far as I understand Cardiff made a proactive decision some time back to withdraw their registration with the English FA and join the Welsh because they wanted to take advantage of the Welsh's allocation of European places and thought it would be easier to get into Europe through them

Therefore I don't see how they could argue their case this time as they can't have it both ways.

Platini is being quoted as saying he will intervene on Cardiff's behalf if the FA do not put them forward for the UEFA Cup if they win the FA Cup.

Who else has applied for intertoto then?

Aston Villa

Everton

Manchester City

Middlesbrough

Newcastle United

Tottenham Hotspur

The last three aren't worth worrying about, and you'll note the absence of Portsmouth, West Ham and Liverpool from the list.

*At least, that is what I've been told the FA have confirmed - given my comments about them earlier, you might want to ask someone else... ;)

I don't think Liverpool could even bring themselves to applying for the Intertoto

I've just put £42.70 on Sporting Lisbon to beat Bolton tomorrow night. Bolton are missing loads of players. Are Lisbon any good?

They beat Basel 5-0 over 2 legs. They lost by 1 goal twice to Man Utd in the CL.

So they seem a decent enough side. Can't say their team sheet looks that great though. Squad

It looks a home banker, but remember that Sporting DON'T have to win the game...a goalless draw is enough and these foreign clubs quite often just play for the 'result' and not the win.

Bolton have sent a team of reserves - leaving 13 first team squad members behind.

Your bet is a surefire winner

They can still put out a decent side actually, I wasn't aware they had a squad that big.

Habsi

Hunt Meite Cahill Samuel

Stelios O'Brien Teymourian Guthrie Braaten

Helguson

Could be worse, I don't think it's over yet in that one.

Hi Nicko. Is this the lowest placing for the thread ever? I thought we should bump it up.

A couple of questions:

1) Whats the situation re: Vogel and Fortune? I know that all the talk has been that if we do sign them it will be for next season rather than this one. Does that seem likely? Will we sign either of them at all?

2) What's going on with Nelsen. On his way back, needing surgery, figthing for his career? The fans seem to have forgotten about a player who was formerly our best player. Him coming back would be a huge boost for the team confidence wise, but he needs that pace and strength!

3) Any early rumblings about who we are tracking going into the summer? My money is on Ramos shifting Huddlestone in the summer to get a more established player. Is Hughes still interested? Anyone else on the radar?

Looks like someone on there fans forum played a hoax. Some people must of lost money as he's now favorite with all the bookies, and Keegan was this morning.

Not a bad money-making idea that. Set up a half decent website, get a fake news story going about the manager, lay some tempting odds on Betfair and take the money.

Just one little problem with all that; it is a criminal activity but then who cares about that these days?
