On the other side of the coin though a lot of the time a striker is impeded in the box by a defender having his hands all over the player or being obstructed by a trailing leg and those extra couple of seconds lost can easily make the difference between scoring and not scoring. We saw an incident on Sunday with Rooney, can't remember which defender it was (Carragher?) but he stuck a leg out, caught Rooney who then stumbled but to his great credit decided to stay on his feet and try and finish it, but by then the chance had got considerably harder for him. In truth it probably deserved to be a penalty but Rooney not going down meant nothing was given.

I do completely agree with the sentiment of your post and that true divers are a scourge on the game, and also this disease is spreading to players who wouldnt have considered it before. We saw Bentley have a go on Saturday which was a shame to see. But sometimes there is a grey area there where a striker is unfairly impeded when trying to score and feels he has to go down in order to convey this to the referee as its denied him from scoring.

Spot on tgm.

Mike Newell also was one to stay on his feet. In 93/4 he rode a "tackle" at QPR on the edge of the six yard box and forced a corner. Before it was taken the ref had a word with him to say well done for not going down (the crowd was small enough to hear the exchange from the front row of the visitors' end)- Mike looked a bit nonplussed as he probably rightly reckoned we would have had a penalty.

Justice was done as we scored the second in a 3-0 canter (Super Atko got the third when put through from the half way line and kept his composure magnificently).

I love the guys who don't go down easily. It warms the cockles of my heart even though they might have won a penalty. They play yhe game in the true spirit.

Those who spring to mind immediately are Dunny, Jason Roberts and Rooney.

Before you get all dewy eyed about Saint David of Harwood, cast your mind back to the pen he got vs Bolton a few weeks ago. I'd agree it wasn't a dive but not the most robust challenge ever seen. Seems to win us plenty of free kicks in dangerous positions around the box too eg v Sheff Utd last year (I mention that in particular cos it 'earned' us the winning goal). Not to say that Dunny is any worse than lots of others, 'going down easily' is a disease that affects just about every player these days if there's an advantage to be gained.

nicko...is there anything in jermaine jenas getting dropped from spurs squad??

i know players get dropped but he seemed to be playing well lately

Jenas has had a strange season. He was doing very well for Spurs and made the England team, then he dips and loses his place for club and country. It's that type of incosistency that stops him being the player he could be.

Ramos is ruthless at Spurs and it will be interesting to see who starts next season in his team.

I think I have found out why David Bentley has not signed his contract yet.

Story should be in the Mirror tomorrow, although as it is a bit 'scientific' it might not make it...

Either way I will give you details in the morning. It's quite revealing and those who remember a 'discussion' about agents four or five months ago may remember the issue involved.

Should we be worried?

It is morning- don't know whether the scientific issues made the astro-physics section of the Mirror today but are you going to share the results of your sleuthing?

A bit too complicated for some obviously...

Anyway, the problem with Bentley and Wes Brown at Man U is that both players and their agents are finding problems dealing with clubs since the rules changed about payments to agents.

Now players are having to be paid more by the club to pay the agent - and that is the stumbling block in both cases. It's a hold-up but no more, I don't think it is a deal-breaker but it is a deal-delayer.

I said when this rule was voted in - by the chairmen incidentally - that it would cause trouble. Now clubs have to pay players quite a bit extra for them to pay their agents.

The only winner is the tax man. The club shells out more, the player ends up with as much and so does the agent.

That's the script as far as I know...

greed greed greed and more greed by players and agents ,they should all try living off a real wage.

Well, you don't expect them to play for nothing...

If you think a player is worth £15 to £20 million you should really pay him those kind of superstar wages.

To be fair to Bentley I don't think his wages demands are too stupid - he has team-mates on more.

dont talk crap alan ...so you think 20,30 40 grand a week is nothing....most folk dont earn anything like that in a year let alon a week.I think sports stars ,movie stars etc are all on obscene money.

And your probably on an onscene amount of money compared someone in Africa, it's all relative. People get paid different amount depending on what they do and if you don't garee with that I suggest you go and live in a communist country.

If you value something at £15 million you have to pay for it.

TV deals are worth fortunes, grounds have up to 70,000 people in them - who come to see players.

There are millions going round in football just now, so the top players deserve their slice.

It's also a short career, so I don't see anything wrong in players asking for decent contracts.

There is no real problem in Bentley's case, just a lot more numbers and issues to go through...

The only delay - and reason it's worth discussing - is because of some halfwit rule that only benefits the taxman.

I'd agree that with amount of money that is in a football these days, that footballers are entitled to some of it. But then I find it very hard when you hear about players demanding £80,000 or £100,000 a week because it's only fair and justifying it by saying that they have a short career and need to have money in the bank. Most people will never earn close to what these guys will earn in their careers, but yet still leave happy lives, don't go without and have a good standard of living. These guys ask for this money to maintain a certain type of lavish lifestyle after football, which goes beyond the idea of them having short careers and needing money for the future.
