modes98 Posted April 3, 2008 Posted April 3, 2008 out of the 3 teams going down only bullard and barnes should intrest us I would love us to get both of them. Bullard is a threat from anywhere around the box and has got a good pass on him. Barnes is largely unproven but definitely a talented kid.

brfcshabba Posted April 3, 2008 Posted April 3, 2008 I wouldn't mind Steven Davis who is on loan at Rangers from Fulham
Cocker Posted April 3, 2008 Posted April 3, 2008 [. Gary Cahill, Gretar Steinnson and Matt Taylor £6.5M offer in the impending Bolton firesale? out of the 3 teams going down only bullard and barnes should intrest us,and maybe davies at a push simon not kevin I know he has been injured allot but I really fail to see the big deal with Barnes.
brian_gallagher85 Posted April 3, 2008 Posted April 3, 2008 You're not alone Cocker, he scored one goal against Newcastle this season (who hasn't) but what else has he done? I know Derby have been woeful, but Carrol/Miller/Villa have all done far far more
JAL Posted April 3, 2008 Posted April 3, 2008 Nearly every end of season we get this who'd be good for Rovers from a relegated prem side, does nobody ever think that they are in a relagation doomed side because they are rubbish. If Rovers took this startegy every year within three years or maybe sooner we'd be relegated remember Matteo what a 'goodun' he was. Come on chaps lets not speculate on poor players (Koumas).Rise above it set your sights higher.

That logic can be applied most of the time but you do get the odd good player who is with a team going down. Andrew Johnson is one from recent past i think of but it's always worth a scan and sometimes a punt on some younger ones. Cocker: Barnes has had a big injury and doesn't seem to have got back into form since then, probably because of the pace of the premiership. Another season in the Championship will see him hitting similar heights and then he'll push on. I doubt anyone will pay the sort of money Derby wanted last summer for him.
Roaming Rover Posted April 3, 2008 Posted April 3, 2008 Whilst there is some truth in that statement Jal, I'm sure these players from relegated teams would prove otherwise: West Ham team relegated 2003 James, Di Canio 82, Glen Johnson, Trevor Sinclair, Steve Lomas,Joe Cole, Defoe, Les Ferdinand, Kanoute. Rovers squad relegated 2000 Duff, Dunn, Jansen, Sutton, Henchoz Leeds team relegated 2004 Robinson, Milner, Smith, Pennant Charlton had Darren Bent and Heridarsson At the time i'm sure quite a few, if not all of those players would have be welcomed by most premier league clubs. Gems can be found even in relegated teams

Guest fernhurstblue Posted April 3, 2008 Posted April 3, 2008 i agree 100% with you JAL in relation to the second part of your reply ..... oh dear edward d****e

You may not be impressed with his transfer fee but there's no doubt Darren Bent has talent. His record in the premiership for Charlton was superb and it hasn't been that awful for spurs, I'm sure it would have been better had he played all season. Paul Robinson was a quality keeper, who has been struck by a problem of making stupid mistakes, but still a premiership player. James Milner is only 22 and will only improve.

Got to agree. I think its a mental thing more than ability. With everyone in the bottom third much of a muchness, the teams that go down are those who aren't mentally conditioned to leave there all on the pitch every week. Remember what happened when we signed Ashley Ward and Nathan Blake, both of whom had been relegated with three clubs each previously ?

Come on chaps lets not speculate on poor players (Koumas).Rise above it set your sights higher. Whilst it's a good point it is actually rare that relegated premiership teams have NO good players. I can think of Sunderland a couple of years back and Derby, but on the whole most relegated teams have between 1 and 4 "premiership" quality players as pointed out by previous posters, with the added bonus for a club like ours that they are generally cheaper than they otherwise would be. The bottom line is that genuine, proven, top class players from a club higher up the table than us will cost far too much, so you then rely on the judgement of the manager for overseas and up-and-coming players. But back to the point, assuming it is Bolton, Fulham and Derby I cannot think of anyone I would like from the first two, and really only Bullard from Fulham, so it seems a pretty poor "crop" this year

brian_gallagher85 Posted April 3, 2008 Posted April 3, 2008 Losing Anelka has made a difference though to Boltons plight SAS

I`ll give you what i consider to be above average players Jaskelinen Bullard Simon Davies Villa (possibly) and as much as id hate to say diouf these players could walk into a top ten team imo
EwoodGlory Posted April 3, 2008 Posted April 3, 2008 CUEVAS-WATCH – Fluminense 2-0 Libertad - Ignore if easily bored Fluminense won the game 2-0, two similar goals either side of half time, free kicks floated into the box and headed in. Apart from that there wasn't many chances in the game and it was quite poor. Cuevas played for around 60mins before mysteriously being substituted. The camera was concentrating on the other end of the pitch where Fluminense had won a corner, so didn’t see him going off. He didn't look injured, maybe a little tired but he was their main threat so it was quite surprising. Unfortunately there was no HT or FT summary, just adverts through the entire break, and I can't find anything online to why he went off. He played as a second striker and dropped back on the left hand side quite a bit to link play up. I assume he must have taken a slight knock as he stood out in a somewhat mediocre team and they were worse when he left the pitch. He was lively on and off the ball and looked to make things happen. In most of Libertad's attacks he was invloved and often the creator. His passing was decent and he found a team-mate in most instances and made them tick. He didn’t get much service and had to make chances for himself, a couple of shots from the edge of the box were blocked by defenders but that was about all. He stood out as by far their best player, the commentator certainly mentioned him more than any other on the pitch. The Fluminense centre back Luiz Alberto was quite solid and composed, apart from that no-one left much of an impression. He did get muscled off the ball a couple of times, but made every attempt to win it back, even a couple of lunges, so he would fit in well Attacking wise he looked a real threat, when he got the ball he always looked to run at people, dropping the shoulder to get past, and kept the ball well, similar to Michael Owen. Overall it wasn't a great game, and his team we're second best. He did however stand out as the best player on the pitch when he as on, and looked a threat. I haven't seen him play for Paraguay, but I would guess that he makes a good partnership with Santa Cruz. If anyone has seen any match reports online I would be interested to see why he went off. Libertad have now been eliminated so I guess that will be the last chance to get a glimpse of him.
nicko Posted April 3, 2008 Author Posted April 3, 2008 That truly is above and beyond the call of duty. Remarkable. Respect.

Pinch Posted April 3, 2008 Posted April 3, 2008 Lennon has so many great attributes, but his inability to deliver a good final ball means that he will never be a top player. Not to compare apples to oranges: but people said the same of Cristiano Ronaldo a few years ago. Lennon is still very young...20, 21? I believe he'll be a very good player, but maybe not with spuds.
BiggusLaddus Posted April 3, 2008 Posted April 3, 2008 Not to compare apples to oranges: but people said the same of Cristiano Ronaldo a few years ago. Lennon is still very young...20, 21? I believe he'll be a very good player, but maybe not with spuds. Difference is that Ronaldo always had the ability but used to overdo it with the tricks and step-overs and miss his chance to deliver the ball, while Lennon seems to lack the technique to strike the ball cleanly. He can't cross or shoot.

He can't cross or shoot. I think Lennon will get there in time, he's still a little raw and I think he just needs time. Pace is arguably more effective than skill and I think more important for a winger as you need to be able to get past your man. So he has the right qualities there. I think you can coach better delivery into him on the training pitch, he needs to learn when to release it more than anything and that only comes with time, a long continued run in the side and good advice and coaching from the staff could see him become a really good player in the next few years.
